STATE OF TENNESSEE ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES LAW
MCS SCHOOL POLICY ON CELL PHONES
UPDATED CELL PHONE AND WEARABLE DEVICE POLICY
At the June Board of Education meeting, the School Board approved updates to Policy 6.312 in response to a new Tennessee state law (HB 932/SB 897). This legislation restricts the use of personal wireless communication devices, such as cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and similar items, in schools.
Our policy requires that these devices be turned off and stored out of sight for the entire school day, unless specifically permitted for educational purposes by a teacher or administrator, or allowed under a student’s IEP or health plan. For CGIS students, this means no phones from 7:00am-2:40pm each day.
We believe this change will have a positive impact on student health, behavior, and focus by reducing distractions and preserving valuable learning time.
Please take a moment to review these expectations with your student before school begins. The full policy is available on the MCS website under Board Policies.
SAFETY REMINDERS
Here are some school traffic safety reminders as we have recently noted some concerns:
Assigned teachers and student Rangers/Safety Ambassadors help keep our students safe as they enter and leave school each day. Your cooperation is appreciated in maintaining safety and making arrival and dismissal as safe and as efficient as possible. Please follow these guidelines for morning arrival and afternoon pickup:
Car drop off areas are Sevierville Road and Hilltop entrances only. (Drop off for handicapped students occurs at the back entrance after buses have cleared. No other students should be dropped off at the back entrance.)
Please help us by ensuring that students are ready to exit their vehicle in the morning and ready to meet their ride in the afternoon.
- Procedures for Sevierville Road (Main) Drop off and Pick Up
- Use the first lane when traffic is light (prior to 7:10 am or if staff are not present and after 2:55 pm); do not make your child cross a lane of traffic if you are able to pull to the curb.
- When traffic guards are on duty, use both lanes and pull as far forward as possible.
- Allow your child to exit from the car only after you have rounded the curve at the theater end of the building. Do not allow students to exit vehicles before you reach the designated sidewalk areas.
- Remember that students will be crossing around you, so remain stopped until the teachers on arrival duty direct you to proceed.
- Do not enter the main drop off area from Hilltop; instead, you should enter the main drop off via Sevierville Road.
- Procedures for Hilltop Drop Off and Pick Up
- Hilltop drop off and pick up is an additional area designated to provide another convenient drop off and pick up point for families.
- During morning drop off, this area isn't staffed as it is a one-lane drop off area.
- We recommend that students sit on the right side of the vehicle for safe and easy drop off and access to the sidewalk.
- Cars should wait in line while students are being dropped off and picked up.
- Please do not pass cars that are dropping off children.
- Please be sensitive to the fact that our children need your full attention during arrival and dismissal and not use your cell phone. Tennessee state law bans the use of a handheld mobile device in a school zone.
- Please do not drop students off in our staff parking areas unless you are parking and walking them in or out. The parking area may be blocked off during our busiest traffic times for safety purposes.
- Students should use the sidewalks and cross walks at all times.
- Follow the directions of the individuals directing traffic and be patient. Safety is more important than speed!

All students entering 7th grade are required to have the following immunizations PRIOR to Monday, August 03, 2026.
Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis booster (“T-dap”)

For your student to start school at Coulter Grove Intermediate School on Monday, August 03, 2026, an updated immunization record, printed on the OFFICIAL “Tennessee Department of Health Certificate of Immunization” form, must be provided to the school.
PLEASE use these next few months to get your child’s immunizations updated and PRINTED ON THE CORRECT FORM. Your health care provider or the local health department can do this.

CGIS Staff Update
As we approach the end of our school year, we want to share information about some teacher coverage for the end of the school year.
- Chris Campbell and his wife, Hannah, recently had a second baby! Congratulations! He is now on paternity leave, and we are filling his teaching role with substitute teachers to finish out the school year.
- Katie Voyles, our CGIS librarian, has been facing some sudden medical issues and has been in the hospital for about two weeks. It is likely that she will also finish out the year on leave. Beth Farner has agreed to finish the year in the library and will be taking care of sending out notices to return books, managing classes and communicating to families as needed to close out the year in the library.

INTEGRITY
This month’s Leadworthy Character Trait is Integrity.
What is Integrity?
Integrity is the ability and willingness to live with honesty and excellence. People who act with integrity make a choice to do the right thing, no matter who is watching. Integrity is the foundation on which we build relationships and trust.
Why focus on Integrity?
- Integrity generates trust. When we are honest and follow through on promises, we gain the confidence of our team; Trust allows us to collaborate and achieve more together.
- Integrity encourages self-assessment. Integrity requires our regular self-assessment to align behaviors with our goals and self-beliefs.
- Integrity is essential in leadership. Great leaders decrease anxiety and build strong teams when they are honest, consistent, and responsible.
Integrity in Action:
- Acknowledge and affirm acts with integrity. Publicly praise students who model acts of integrity such as honesty and honor. Encourage students to identify classmates who show integrity.
- Use scenarios and role play. Challenge students with real-life scenarios and situations that allow them to reflect, discuss, and choose the best next step or action.
- Create a culture of accountability. Invite students to give you feedback. Ask students to rate the class based on your Social Contract. Empower students with choice-based consequences.
