Adaptive Pause at Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School

Dear Parents and Staff,

Earlier this morning, we made the decision to implement an Adaptive Pause at Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School, closing the building until November 16. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution after a COVID-19 outbreak in a central location within the building. An outbreak is defined by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) as two or more cases connected by time and place.

As permitted by the IDPH, Districts may pause in-person learning at the classroom, building or District level at their discretion to prevent disease transmission during a pandemic. Our decision to close Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School temporarily was a result of several factors:

  • Multiple positive cases connected by time and place;

  • A probable case, connected by time and place to confirmed cases and;

  • These situations occurred in a central location within the building that is not contained within a classroom(s).

We know you will understand that we must place the health and wellbeing of our students and staff above our desire to stay open for face-to-face instruction.

I want to assure you that all of our schools adhere to and exceed all health and safety measures recommended by the Health Department, including keeping 6+ feet of distance whenever possible, wearing face coverings, washing hands and sanitizing the building more frequently. We are working closely with the CCHD and are prepared to implement any additional measures they recommend.

Should we have similar situations arise at other District 15 facilities, we will not hesitate to implement an Adaptive Pause where needed. As I have continuously stated during the course of this pandemic, please have your contingency plans in place should a closure occur at the classroom, building or District level. As was the case today, often, these decisions are made with little warning due to the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 virus.

Should new information arise that is applicable to your student or school, we will communicate with you as soon as possible. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Laurie Heinz

Superintendent of Schools
