HS Biology Class HS Biology Class

Mr. Schoenecker’s Sophomore Biology class has spent the past month diving into the scientific process through hands-on, student-led research projects. Each group selected their own topic of interest, ranging from the effects of caffeine on heart rate (administered in controlled amounts with parental permission), to the osmosis of gummy bears, to comparing how different recovery positions affect the speed at which heart rate returns to resting after exercise.

After conducting their experiments and collecting data, students compiled their findings onto presentation boards and shared their results with the class. These group presentations not only fostered collaboration and public speaking skills, but also gave students the opportunity to receive peer feedback—an essential component of the scientific process. In addition to presenting, each student wrote an individual research paper to explain their methodology, analyze their data, and reflect on their conclusions. Several students went above and beyond, submitting research papers that reached nearly ten pages in length.

Learning how to write a scientific research paper helps students build skills in organization, academic writing, evidence-based reasoning, and proper citation—key components of college readiness and scientific literacy. Meanwhile, group presentations encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate complex information in a clear, engaging way.

Excellent work, Sophomores! Your hard work, creativity, and curiosity are shining through.
