CAVA ELD Overview
At CAVA we offer a structured English Immersion Program, which in short is a program where all ELs are provided instruction in English with built in scaffolds for English learners as well as Designated and Integrated ELD. Integrated ELD focuses on content area CA Standards in tandem with ELD Standards to support English Learners in their classroom. Integrated ELD is used in all classes where English learners are present. Designated ELD is an assigned time during the school day where students focus on developing their English Proficiency targeting CA ELD standards. ELD Specialist use the CA ELD Standards in ways that build into and from content instruction to develop English language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. At CAVA, Designated ELD is held throughout the week and is a required course.
Attendance
As a virtual school, we rely on our Learning coaches at home to ensure our CAVA students are attending all live instruction on time and are fully engaged in the session. This means, cameras are on, students are participating appropriately and complete all work in class, as assigned. Our ELD classes are held throughout the week and are required. If your child has a schedule conflict (meaning that a general education class is held at the same time as your ELD class) we ask that your child makes the ELD class a priority. In your local brick and mortar school, this would be the same as when a child is pulled out of class to attend an ELD class in a separate classroom.
Parent Education Meeting
At the start of each school year, we host a live Parent Education meeting to support our EL families with information regarding our English Language Development department. This year, we will be holding our Parent Information Meeting on Wednesday, September 9th at 2:30pm. During this meeting, we will give an overview of our ELD department and in depth view of the curriculum we use.
