Future Designers at Benton Middle School...

Designers are producing great products in Mrs. McMath's Media Arts lab at Benton Middle School. The Advanced Media Arts students are designing water bottles that incorporate unique patterns and forms using Adobe Illustrator. As a part of the reflective process, students participated in a "Sticker Critique" where they evaluated their peers' designs by making observations that reflect the use of form, color, and pattern. Students looked back through the process starting with student design board layouts to see the progress made through each step of the project. These real world applications are exciting for students. Great job designers!

Greek Theater Meets Chicanx Drama at Norwalk High School

The Drama Club of Norwalk High is presenting "Electricidad," a modern play based on the Greek play "Electra" by Sophocles. "Electricidad" is set in East LA and explores themes of violence, loss, and redemption through the perspective of this timeless tragedy. The play was adapted by the award-winning performer and writer, Luis Alfaro, known for his Chicanx adaptations of Greek plays such as "Oedipus El Rey" and "Mojada." These ancient Greek tragedies are transported to the 21st century streets of Los Angeles, giving voice to the concerns of the Chicanx and wider Latinx communities. Barbara Vargas, drama and guitar teacher at Norwalk High School, will direct the play, which will be performed by the Norwalk High School Drama Club on November 15th in the Norwalk High School Auditorium.

Silver's Secret

Benton Middle School is excited to present "Silver's Secret." Directed by Drama Teacher Jennifer Nitschke, this playful pirate play is full of silliness, featuring cheerleader mermaids, ghosts, smugglers, and comic stagehands in the form of lobsters! The story follows the famous pirate Long John Silver, who, while on his deathbed, summons his sons Redbeard and Blackbeard, as well as his daughter, No Beard. Unfortunately, his children did not inherit their father's pirating skills. Don't miss this entertaining show about clumsy pirates and their escapades on 11/15, 11/16, 11/22, or 11/23 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Benton MPR.

Arts Economy

Want to know how much a specific creative sector is contributing to the U.S. economy?

In 2022 new data was released to demonstrate the value arts related jobs had added to the U.S. economy (which had hit an all-time high at the time), contributing 4.3 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), or $1.1 trillion, to the U.S. economy. The data was produced jointly by the National Endowment for the Arts' Office of Research and Analysis and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Commerce Department. The searchable database provided by the ACPSA revealed the size of the arts and cultural sector and its contributions to the U.S. economy, the number of workers employed by those industries, compensation figures, consumer expenditures on arts and culture, and import/export activity.

Data was collected from 2017-2022 and compiled into a searchable graphic index accessible on the National Endowment for the Arts website. Users can access a graphic chart through the drop-down list, select from a variety of arts and cultural industries to learn how much value and growth they have added to the U.S. economy.
