Our Lady of the Mission
Whitford Parish - 31st May 2026
This Sunday is: 7th June Corpus Christi
Next Sunday is: 14th June Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
Message from Fr Cyprian
Greetings and peace be with you.
Fr Errol and I warmly welcome you here at Our Lady of the Mission, Whitford Parish, parishioners and visitors alike. We pray and hope that you feel truly safe and at home in this our place of prayer, worship and personal encounter with our risen Lord. May the Holy Spirit ever pray in us more than we can ever imagine and bind us together in the love of our Heavenly Father. Over fifty years, Whitford Catholic Parish remains home to dozens of nationalities represented by our parishioners and frequent visitors. We take pride in our young people; those in our parish primary and secondary schools, those enrolled in our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) and our parish youth group. They are not just our future Church but a vital part of our Church today and now. We value these our young people and endeavour to have their voices heard at every level of our administrative and pastoral engagements. We are ever grateful to the many individuals and groups that volunteer in various ministries of our parish life. To one and all, know that you are valued and appreciated in your own right. We cannot be what we are without you. Together, we continue to seek ways in which we can generously respond to that universal call to holiness of life in our families, parish community and in the society at large. I invite you and all your loved ones to be purposeful in this resolve. We must leave no one behind, those within and those on the peripheries. As always, Fr. Errol and I thank one and all of you for your ongoing prayers, concern, encouragement and support. Rest assured of our daily thoughts and prayers. We entrust you and yours, into the powerful intercessions of our Blessed Virgin Mother of Good counsel, and into those of St Joseph, patron of the universal Church.
Fr Cyprian M Shikokoti - Parish Priest.

Readings
Introduction The Lord gives himself as food for
our hungry, yearning soul. The Body and Blood of
the risen Lord are true food and drink, given to us
that we might live for ever.
First Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3. 14b-16a
The people wandering in the desert learn from Moses that they are being put to the test, yet even in their seamlessly endless journey they are cared for by the Lord.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17
Paul teaches the meaning of Communion; that
in the Eucharist we are united, sharing the passion
of the Lord.
Gospel: John 6:51-58
In Jesus we are drawn into the life of God – the bread and wine in which we participate brings us into the life of the Lord himself and brings us to eternal life.
Antiphon to the Psalm:
Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
Adsumus
What are the attachments that currently shape my walk with Christ?
Adsumus is an invitation to welcome the Holy Spirit’s divine guidance, unity, and wisdom into our church gatherings. In today’s Corpus Christi readings, we encounter two foundational Biblical experiences: the Israelites’ escape from Egypt, sustained by manna in the wilderness, and the early Christians’ experience of the Eucharist and their call to bring this ‘living bread’ to the world.
Put simply, ‘Adsumus’ is Latin for ‘Here we are’ or ‘We stand before you.’ It is an ancient Catholic prayer to the Holy Spirit, traditionally accredited to St. Isidore of Seville in the 7th century.
It is a prayer that has been used for centuries in Church councils and synods. It notably opened every session of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) and was recently adopted to guide discernment at Pope Francis’ Synod on Synodality (2021–2024).
As we gather here today, let us take some time to deepen our understanding of this prayer by reflecting on the third line of the Adsumus prayer:
‘Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it.’
These words invite us to ask the Holy Spirit for the divine guidance, unity, and wisdom we need for our church gatherings.
May this prayer remind us that truly fruitful Adsumus-inspired gatherings rely on thoughtful inclusion, attentive listening, and confident trust in the Spirit’s guidance.
This week, we begin the third week of our parish’s Adsumus initiative—inviting the Holy Spirit’s guidance, unity, and wisdom into our church gatherings. As we celebrate Corpus Christi, our readings recall two key biblical moments: the Israelites’ escape from Egypt, sustained by manna in the wilderness, and the early Christians’ experience of the Eucharist and their call to share Jesus’ ‘living bread’ with love and friendship.
Today we turn to the second line of the Adsumus prayer: ‘With you alone to guide us, make yourself at home in our hearts.’ We are reminded that Adsumus invites the Spirit to move our hearts and bring the prayer to life as we make it our own.
It is important to remember that Adsumus does not transform us without our awareness. Instead, it is a companion for our shared journey.
This Trinity Sunday, the mystery of God’s love invites each of our hearts to bring Adsumus to life in our community.

READINGS AT MASS: CORPUS CHRISTI - YEAR A
First reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3,14-16
He fed you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known
Moses said to the people: ‘Remember how the Lord your God led you for forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you and know your inmost heart – whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor your fathers had known, to make you understand that man does not live on bread alone but that man lives on everything that comes from the mouth of the Lord. ‘Do not become proud of heart. Do not forget the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery: who guided you through this vast and dreadful wilderness, a land of fiery serpents, scorpions, thirst; who in this waterless place brought you water from the hardest rock; who in this wilderness fed you with manna that your fathers had not known.’
Responsorial Psalm: Ps. 147:12-15,19-20
Response: Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
O praise the Lord, Jerusalem! Zion, praise your God! He has strengthened the bars of your gates he has blessed the children within you. R.
He established peace on your borders, he feeds you with finest wheat. He sends out his word to the earth and swiftly runs his command. R.
He makes his word known to Jacob, to Israel his laws and decrees. He has not dealt thus with other nations; he has not taught them his decrees. R.
Second reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17
That there is only one loaf means that, though we are many, we form one body
The blessing-cup that we bless is a communion with the blood of Christ, and the bread that we break is a communion with the body of Christ. The fact that there is only one loaf means that, though there are many of us, we form a single body because we all have a share in this one loaf.
Gospel Acclamation: John 6:51-52
Alleluia, alleluia! I am the living bread from heaven, says the Lord; whoever eats this bread will live for ever. Alleluia!
Gospel Reading: John 6:51-58
My flesh is real food and my blood is real drink
Jesus said to the crowd: ‘I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.’ Then the Jews started arguing with one another: ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ they said. Jesus replied: ‘I tell you most solemnly, if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood has eternal life, and I shall raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me and I live in him. As I, who am sent by the living Father, myself draw life from the Father, so whoever eats me will draw life from me. This is the bread come down from heaven; not like the bread our ancestors ate: they are dead, but anyone who eats this bread will live for ever.’
WE PRAY AS ONE: ADSUMUS SANCTE SPIRITUS
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever, Amen.
POPE LEO XIV REFLECTIONS
Greetings, my brothers and sisters in Christ,
In Italy and in many countries we are celebrating the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ — the Latin name is often used: Corpus Domini or Corpus Christi. Every Sunday the ecclesial community gathers around the Eucharist, the sacrament instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper. Nevertheless, each year we joyfully celebrate the feast dedicated to this Mystery that is central to the faith, in order to fully express our adoration to Christ who offers himself as the food and drink of salvation.
Today’s Gospel passage, taken from Saint John, is part of the sermon on the “bread of life” (cf. 6:51-58). Jesus states: “I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread...; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh” (v. 51). He means to say that the Father has sent him into the world as the food of eternal life, and for this reason he will sacrifice himself, his flesh.
Indeed, on the Cross, Jesus gave his body and shed his blood. The Son of Man crucified is the true Paschal Lamb, who delivers us from the slavery of sin and sustains us on the journey to the promised land. The Eucharist is the sacrament of his flesh given so as to give life to the world; those who are nourished by this food abide in Jesus and live through him. To assimilate Jesus means to abide in him, to become children in the Son.
In the Eucharist Jesus, as he did with the disciples at Emmaus, draws alongside us, pilgrims in history, to nourish the faith, hope and charity within us; to comfort us in trials; to sustain us in the commitment to justice and peace. This supportive presence of the Son of God is everywhere: in cities and the countryside, in the North and South of the world, in countries with a Christian tradition and in those newly evangelized. In the Eucharist he offers himself as spiritual strength so as to help us put into practice his commandment — to love one another as he loved us — building communities that are welcoming and open to the needs of all, especially the most frail, poor and needy people.
Nourishing ourselves of the Eucharistic Jesus also means abandoning ourselves trustingly to him and allowing ourselves to be guided by him. It means welcoming Jesus in place of one’s own “me”. In this way the love freely received from Jesus in the Eucharistic Communion, by the work of the Holy Spirit, nourishes our love for God and for the brothers and sisters we meet along the daily journey. Nourished by the Body of Christ, we become ever more concretely the mystical Body of Christ. The Apostle Paul reminds us of this: “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Cor 10:16-17).
May the Virgin Mary, who was ever united to Jesus Bread of Life, help us to rediscover the beauty of the Eucharist, to nourish ourselves of it with faith, so as to live in communion with God and with our brothers and sisters.
