Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
February 17, 2023
One of the beautiful opportunities and responsibilities of public education is to bring students together to understand differences in the human experience. This week was one where the team at Lutherville Lab shined in helping our students learn about one another.
This week our second grade students learned about two of their schoolmates who have Alopecea Areata from the students, their parents, Nurse Vita and Mrs. Kiewe. They had a chance to ask questions and learn about the condition. The students were respectful and inquisitive and understanding.
Also this week, our Kindergarten students had the chance to learn about Angelman's Syndrome, a neurogenetic condition that one of our wonderful Kindergarten students, Shea, has. They learned about how people with that condition struggle to make their body do what their brain asks of it and the ways adults at school and beyond support. The students asked great questions and were so engaged in learning about their schoolmate, Shea. Students and families will also have the opportunity to support Shea by joining Team Shea's Angels in the Angelman Syndrome Baltimore walk on May 20th.
Finally -- we had some unexpectedly late busses this week, which is understandably frustrating to families. We hope that future latenesses will be communicated promptly and wanted to share the BCPS Transportation Status site with the community.
A reminder that schools are closed on Monday and we have Hula for Hopkins on Friday evening of next week!

BCPS Stakeholder Survey!
Team BCPS students in Grades 3-12, parents/caregivers, staff, and community members are invited to participate in the school system’s annual Stakeholder Climate Survey. The brief online survey will be available on the BCPS home page through Friday, March 3, 2023.
The survey is available in multiple languages for students, parents, and community members. This annual survey is an important way for us to listen to you, the BCPS community, learn your views, and be responsive to your feedback by taking action to improve our schools and school system. Survey feedback is used by our schools to refine School Progress Plans as well as by the system to measure progress toward goals in The Compass strategic plan.
The views of respondents will help to shape our budget, our staffing, and our programs. We hope all members of Team BCPS will participate in this important annual survey - we want to hear from you! Thank you for your ongoing support and collaboration on behalf of our incredible students and staff.

Haiku Writing Contest
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. BCPS is only seeking 17 syllables.
For the BCPS 2023 Haiku Contest, each student is invited to choose from among 10 pieces of student artwork and to write a haiku inspired by that artwork. (Below are only partial images of each artwork.) Entries for the annual BCPS Haiku Poetry Contest will be accepted from 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, through 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 2.
All haiku must be original and must be submitted using the online 2023 Haiku Contest Form. Winning haiku will be chosen at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 17, International Haiku Poetry Day, and will receive prizes.
As in prior years, the winning poems and additional selected haiku will be compiled into an online book with student artwork. Each school library will receive a print copy.
