Check out these great resources shared by one of our K-1 families for what they are using!!
I purchased this for adding and subtracting. I know it just looks like they can just use their own fingers, but they both enjoy creating the problem and then showing it on the fingers. I also found it useful when either/both of the addends are bigger than 10. We can count up or count down using the fingers.
We’ve been using it to practice our counting backwards and forwards. We’ve also been using it like a number line. They both enjoy popping the numbers in and counting them. We pretend that their fingers are frogs or rabbits, and they are jumping from number to number.
I bought us our own 10 block with counters so we can demonstrate the problems. They like moving the little circles around. I let them choose which colors they want to use. LOL 🤷🏻♀️ Giving them SOME choice always makes them happy and more willing to work with me.
Instead of the boring flashcards, I got these. We spin them around to practice our addition and subtraction problems. Each spinner has a number 1-9 in the middle, and you add or subtract based on which side of the spinner you’re on. They really enjoy spinning the fidget spinner. LOL And flipping it over is like figuring out the mystery. They get so excited when they flip it over and see that they chose the right answer.
Access Lexia & IXL
Your student is required to complete 1 hour/week in each platform. (1 hour for Lexia, 1 hour for IXL)
You are welcome to split this time up however you would like to. Our week for this will run Sunday-Saturday for pulling this date.

The ARVA Hub
I wanted to stop by and introduce the new ARVA Hub.! This is ARVA's new office located in the Downtown Little Rock area! A lot of planning went into this space and now we get to use it! The great thing about the Hub is that many spaces were designed with you in mind! This location is now available if your internet is down or if your power is out! You are welcome to load up and go use the HUB during the day to get your work done! I understand not everyone lives in the LR area so this is not feasible for your family! However, if you live close...go check it out! You will LOVE THIS PLACE! (Just remember an LC must be with students at all times. You cannot just drop off and leave!)
If you do need to utilize the Hub in the event of having your internet or power out, please reach out and let me know prior to heading that way so that I can alert our office staff that you will be coming. 🙂
Improve Your Student's Focus
Ideas to improve focus:
1. Set a Timer and play beat the clock. Break the lesson in half and put a reasonable amount of time on the timer. If they beat the clock have a round of applause, celebration or special claps. Then, move immediately to the next half of the lesson.
2. If the student needs to move as they work, let him/her stand up and move around as long as they stay on task.
3. Do the hardest subject first. Then let him/her pick their favorite subject next.
4. Use hands-on manipulatives. If the cubes aren't fun, let him/her bring out small toys, macaroni, or anything fun to play with. You could spray shaving cream in a cookie sheet, and let him/her write the answers in it.
5. A reward system works as well at home as it does in a public school. Have a treasure box.

Weekly Update || 5.5-5.9
Happy Friday on this stormy day! I hope that everyone is staying dry! I know many of you are currently battling power outages in and out. If your power goes out, please try to log in for attendance as soon as you can.
We are gearing up for next week! I am working to get my last few students out of 131 students in to complete ATLAS!
Thank you so much to those of you who have shown up when scheduled or have communicated anything that is happening! I appreciate you so much!!
Once ATLAS is complete, I am working to wrap up STAR testing for anyone that is lacking STAR. PLEASE make the required sessions that you see on your student’s daily plan a PRIORITY!
As the end of the year approaches, I know many of you have been working hard to finish early! If you think that is you, please be watching for a survey to come to you early next week. I will then be able to look over your child specifically and let you know if anything is missing!
Lastly, we need some input from everyone! We have been awarded national recognition for our Capturing Kids' Hearts! This is an incredible accomplishment, and you are a huge part of that as well. If you could take 5 minutes of your time to please complete the following surveys, it would be helpful.

Weekly Update || 4.28-5.2
Good afternoon ARVA Families!
I hope that you all have fun plans ready for this weekend! I am hoping we see some more beautiful sunshine.
Next week is time for your sweet Kinder & First Grade students to shine!! We will be hitting the ground running FULL FORCE this Monday!! I ask that everyone please double check your plans for next week to make sure you see 2 sessions for ATLAS testing. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRIORITIZE MAKING IT TO YOUR ATLAS SESSIONS!!
A few notes to remember:
- Make sure you are logging in each day Monday-Friday & completing lessons in the OLS!
- Stay up to date on all lessons. Try to clear out all unmastered lessons and overdue lessons.
- Continue to work an hour a week in IXL and Lexia.
Many people have asked about early finish for the school year. Here are the most recent requirements that we have received from admin on things that must be completed in order to be an early finisher:
- You must continue having lessons in the OLS to work on until May 9
- All lessons completed and mastered that have been assigned to you.
- If there are lessons after the last day of school, you will not be required to complete these.
- You must still attend Stride Tutoring, Special Education, or Dyslexia class until the last week of school.
- Absences must all be made up and cleared off—if you have a lot of absences, we will likely not approve you for early finisher.
- All STAR testing completed (we could ask you to retake if we saw a big drop in scores).
- Must be completing regular 1/hour/week in IXL & Lexia. If you have NOT been, you will not be approved to finish early
Thank you for your continued support – I’m so thankful for your family!
ATLAS Update 4.18.25 + Weekly Update || 4.21-4.25
I am so excited that today is Friday! We are almost to the weekend! Hopefully, the rain will stay away and you can enjoy a nice, sunny Easter weekend – however you choose to spend it.
I wanted to provide you with the most recent update regarding our ATLAS testing. We received an update today from the AR Department of Education and they feeling hopeful that our testing issues are being resolved. They are still working to ensure that the system will work properly to ease any frustration when we are able to use it.
They have requested us to hold off until the week of April 28 to conduct our virtual K-2 ATLAS testing.
In the meantime, I plan to proceed with finishing STAR testing next week (a required piece that we must complete for the end of year).If you have already completed both of your STAR tests with me, this is a GREAT time to work hard in the OLS (and possibly get ahead) and keep working strong in IXL/Lexia!
The following week (week of April 28), we will work to complete ATLAS - please be watching for an updated schedule to come your way on Monday as we have had to make some adjustments to schedules.
This plan will help us complete our end-of-year assessments smoothly & in a timely manner.
Thank you for your support and patience with the adjustments that have been made. I am grateful for amazing families like you!
I hope you all have a great weekend. Happy Easter!
Mrs. Duvall
Weekly Update || 4.14-4.19
Happy Friday!
We are officially in the final countdown to ATLAS Testing. Please read all the important information below:
- This test is NOT pass or fail! Please help your student relax by reminding him/her this is just to show what he/she knows! We just want to see all the amazing things you have learned this year. I want to encourage you to write your student a little note to read each day before testing. Just brag on them and tell them how proud you are of the hard work they are doing so far!
- We will do all our testing in the Secure Testing browser! (Secure Test icon/application) You will join the class connect first to get the session ID and hear the directions. Have your 10-digit SSID (state ID) ready and something to write down the session ID on.
- I strongly encourage you to have a whiteboard and marker for testing. If you use paper and pencil/pen (which you can) you will have to tear it up before submitting your test!
- Parents role: There MUST be an adult to help your student get logged into each test. You can help them log in, but that is the ONLY assistance that you can provide. I need you to realize how important this component is...if you help them IN ANY WAY, the test will be considered INVALID and all testing at home privileges will be REVOKED by the state department.
- The state is saying to anticipate scores in the fall (we do not have an exact date of this).
- Please make sure you arrive at least 10-15 minutes early for your class connect to start testing! Even if you are waiting for the session to start, you will be ready!
- I have wonderful ARVA teachers as testing helpers due to having over 130 students: do not panic if it is not me you see...my helpers are amazing! They believe in you too!
- I have included a PDF with ATLAS Reminders in our smore HERE as well as details about the ELA test. Please take a moment to check these out!
Next week:
- No regular class connects due to testing!
- No Stride Tutoring for the next two weeks!
- Make sure to get you 1 hour of IXL & 1 hour of LEXIA.
- Get caught up and ahead on lessons! Please note that if you have completed the entire curriculum with no unmastered lessons and have all required testing/components completed your last day for the year could be May 9th!
- Make sure whether you are testing or not to log in EACH DAY Monday-Friday next week! We want to avoid unnecessary absences!
- Know that you are amazing and will SHINE BRIGHT!!!

I am so proud of the 3rd-5th grade students that I have seen for ATLAS this week!! They have jumped in and worked so hard – I know that when y’all’s time comes in April, y’all will do the exact same!!!

Happy Friday and Happy Valentine's Day!
I hope that everyone, whether you celebrate or not, knows you are loved so much by me! I am so thankful for each and every one of you!
I am so proud of the 3rd grade students that I have seen for ATLAS this week!! They have jumped in and worked so hard – I know that when y’all’s time comes in April, y’all will do the exact same!!!

Next week will continue to look a little bit different – I will be continuing to assist with administering ATLAS Interims for FLEX 3rd-5th grade students. Due to this, we will not have our live Tier 1 CC sessions next week (they’ll be removed from your plan by the end of the day). If your student has K12 Tutoring, they WILL still have these sessions.
What does this mean?
1. This is not a “vacation” for you from school.
2. You will still need to complete all lessons in the OLS each school day.
3. You still need to complete your 1 hour of Lexia next week.
4. You still need to complete your 1 hour of IXL next week.
5. If you have overdue lessons, you need to get these made up.
Please know this is a great time to dive deep into your lessons on the OLS and work extra in IXL and Lexia!
* I know that Classlink has been hit or miss this week. If it gives you any trouble, give it a short time and try again. I am hearing reports that Stride/K12 is working diligently on getting this resolved! *
Math: This area covers so much material throughout the year. I want to strongly encourage you to really work extra hard in Math! This is one of the main reasons we have provided you guys with the resource IXL. We really want to encourage families to work weekly if not daily in this platform!
Tip: Have your student step in the arena in IXL on Tuesday! Then, look at their scores and start work on areas of struggle! I promise you this will be a huge help for Kinders and 1st graders on end of the year ATLAS Summative testing!
I hope you guys all have an amazing 3-day weekend! Remember NO SCHOOL on Monday!!! Take time to make up any days/things that you have missed with this extra day!

Weekly Update || 11.4-11.8
Happy Friday, families!
I hope that you have had a great week! I am thankful to be back at work today after Theo was home sick from school yesterday!
We have had a small extension to complete STAR that you received info on last week. If you have not completed this, please take time to do so.
Next week on Friday, some students will complete Testlets after some of the data that we received back from the ATLAS screeners that we completed at the beginning of the year. This is not a huge piece to worry about – it is simply a way to see that your student is growing and achieving what we want them to this school year. We have been told that these testlets will be much shorter than the screeners we completed near the beginning of the year.
I am waiting on a final word of one of the pieces that I need before placing some students on the schedule. I hope to have this answer by Monday & will communicate via email with you individually if your student will need to complete a testlet.
Have a wonderful weekend & enjoy the start to November!
Mrs. Duvall
Weekly Update 10.28-11.1
Happy Friday families!
It has been so good being back with you guys after being out next week!
Next week is our official STAR Progress Monitoring Week. Please ensure that your student completes this no later than Thursday, 10.31.24 at 4PM. Failure to do so will require them to attend a live CC to complete this on Friday. (See below for the details that were pushed out via email earlier this week). I have also included a snip below if you need a visual of what your student will need to complete once in Renaissance.
Please ensure that your student has completed 1 hour in Lexia this week & 1 hour in IXL for this week. I will pull a report for this on Monday.
I hope that you have something fun planned for this weekend! Get out and enjoy this last weekend of October!
-------
Next week is a busy week for many families! We are wrapping up the month of October and getting ready to head into progress monitoring. As an elementary school, we do our progress monitoring in STAR. We have each student take the STAR Early Literacy and STAR Math assessment. This helps give us a good picture of which standards your child has mastered for his/her grade level throughout the year and which areas we still need to help them. We do not take a formal grade on our STAR assessments, but we do use this data to help us drive our instruction. We have found it helpful in knowing which standards students have mastered already. This keeps us from teaching skills they already know as a whole group and lets us focus more on areas of struggles needed for growth.
We have been given the opportunity to allow you to complete the STAR tests for progress monitoring on your own. We know that schedules are busy and sometimes squeezing in that extra class connect is tough. We wanted to offer you the chance to take progress monitoring on your own time. This is very important for your student to work individually! I know it is tempting to help your child if he/she is struggling on a question/concept. PLEASE DO NOT HELP HIM/HER!!! If you are helping, we do not get a good picture of what he/she actually knows! Please also note if you help and we see large inflation in growth we will require your student to retake the assessment in a live class connect with us! Remember this is NOT for a grade…this just shows up what YOUR child knows!
You can log any day starting today to take STAR math and Star Early Literacy. Remind your student to take his/her time! We want to see their best work!
Go to Resources --> Classlink --> and then the white box with the fancy R (Renaissance).This will auto log them into STAR. Once on the main screen, they will select Math/Early Literacy. For the classroom, please select Grade _ 2024-2025.
Please remember that your student will need to take 2 STAR assessments (Early Literacy & Math). Feel free to break these apart into 2 separate days.
Weekly Update || 10.14-10.18
Happy Pumpkin Patch Friday!
It was so good getting to see both current and former students around the Pumpkin Patch today! I'm so glad I got to see those that I did!!
Today is the end of our first nine weeks!!! That means we have made it 1/4 of the way through the school year. WOW! You guys have done a GREAT job!!
Don't forget no school this Monday or Tuesday! We have Fall Break!
On the horizon:
- Nine weeks ends today! Make sure all IXL quizzes are done.
- Make sure unmastered lessons get mastered!
- NO SCHOOL MONDAY OR TUESDAY!!! Enjoy Fall break!
I will be out of office next Wednesday-Friday. For those that may have a CC with me one of these days, I will be sending out an alternate assignment instead of our live CC. Be watching for an email with more details on this before Tuesday evening. Remember, even if you do not have a live CC, you must still complete work within the OLS.
Have an amazing Fall Break and I'll miss you next week!
Weekly Update || 10.7-10.11
Happy Friday, families!
I hope that you've had a great week! I know I've enjoyed getting a couple of fall-ish mornings - afternoons, not so much!
There is a skill check (called a quiz in IXL) for your student in IXL. Please take time to complete this (and any other quizzes you may have) no later than Wednesday, October 9.
It's been nice being in a routine the last few weeks! I know the first bit of the school year can be different but it's been SO GREAT being in classes with your students and watching them grow and shine!
Next Friday, 10.11.24, we have our ARVA PUMPKIN PATCH ADVENTURE DAY!! I would LOVE to see you at the Peebles Farm event in Augusta!
Many of you have asked where to see how much time your student has spent learning in IXL - I was able to finally get an answer from our IXL Experts! I have included a snip below that is found if you scroll down to the Student Dashboard.
Thank you for all of your hard work - make sure that you take time this weekend to work through any overdue lessons that your student may have or any CC recordings that they may need to watch!
Have a WONDERFUL weekend!!
Weekly Update || 9.30-10.4
Hi families!
I hope that you have had a great Friday!
I wanted to stop by and give some clarity on lessons within the OLS. We are a mastery school. One of our requirements is mastery on lessons. You have three attempts to master each lesson that has a quiz/assessment attached. I am very willing to give more attempts if needed. However, as LCs and students, I want you to work with the idea of "my goal is to master this lesson" not just complete each lesson. I highly encourage LCs to sit down with your child after they have worked through a lesson and discuss it with them. One of the things with FLEX is that we have less class connects than our general education classes. That means more learning falls into the laps of our LCs and/or parents. I am asking and begging you to please take the time to work through unmastered lessons with your student.
I am working to go through each week and clear out unmastered lessons. That means they will be moved over to the overdue status on your OLS. Remember, to remain compliant in FLEX you must keep less than 10 over dues. I will be adding a back on track class starting next week that will be required for anyone with 5 or more overdues Monday morning. I will start the Engagement Check process which could result in removal of FLEX if you are not attending those sessions. There is an easy fix for this...work together to keep all your lessons mastered and no overdue lessons!
Take time this weekend to look through and ensure that your student does not have any overdue lessons – if they do, take advantage of your time this weekend and work to knock those out!
Just a reminder as I will often add, each student should be spending 1 hour/ week in IXL & 1 hour/week in Lexia.
I’ve included a great writing resource passed along from one of our fabulous families below to use as you wish!
Thanks for your hard work for your student to shine bright!
Mrs. Duvall
Weekly Update || 9.23-9.27
Happy Friday, families!
A BIG THANK YOU for all of your hard work this week!
It was GREAT to get our AIMS CCs out and rolling as well as knocking out almost all of our remaining ATLAS Screeners + Beginning of Year STAR - WAY TO GO!!
Next week, I will be out on Monday. We will not have our typical Math CC. In lieu of our live CC, I will push out an email Monday morning with details of what to do instead!
If you have missed logging in any school day this week, please take time this weekend to make up those days!
I hope that you have something fun planned for this weekend - I can't wait to hear about it next week!
Weekly Update || 9.16-9.20
Hi families!
I hope that you have had a great week!
I’ m so excited to get back into full swing next week! You should see a Math CC for your student on Monday & an ELA CC for your student on Tuesday! If you do not see these, please reach out to me and let me know!
FRIDAY 4:15PM UPDATE - MY REPORT IS NOT PUSHING OUT LIKE IT SHOULD. WATCH FOR THIS BY THE END OF DAY MONDAY!!
Before the end of the day, you will receive your student’s beginning of year STAR report. If for some reason your student has not completed the Early Literacy or Math piece of this, we will complete this next Friday.
If you do not see IXL or Lexia on your student’s ClassLink page, please take a snip and send to me with your student’s name & ARVA student ID number in a separate email.
I want to give a big THANK YOU to all of your hard work getting our ATLAS screeners knocked out! With y’all’s hard work, we have completed over 90% of our class! THANK YOU!!!!
I hope you have a WONDERFUL weekend & I can’t wait to see you on Monday!!
9.9-9.13
Happy Friday, families!
We have made it through a great week of screeners! Thank you for your patience and hard work to get these done! We have made it through an incredible amount of screeners in a short time.
Next week, we will have a modified CC schedule. You can see this reflected on your student's plan.
K will meet on Tuesday at 9:30AM and 1st grade will meet at 10:30AM.
We will be working hard to wrap up screeners next week. Please see the schedule below for what we are lacking. 😀 (I will add CCs for Wednesday & Thursday soon)
Reminder - if you have not completed your 1 hour of IXL and 1 hour of Lexia, you can work this weekend to complete that for the week.
Weekly Update || 9.3.24-9.6.24
Hi families!
Next week we will solely work to complete the required ATLAS screeners (state law) for all of our students K-3. Please see the schedule listed above.
IF YOUR STUDENT'S NAME IS LISTED IN RED, I AM MISSING THE PIECES BELOW THAT ARE REQUIRED TO BE ABLE TO COMPLETE ANYTHING IN THE ATLAS PORTAL. PLEASE COMPLETE THE ITEMS BELOW ASAP.
• ATLAS Training: REQUIRED Training Video (start here): https://go.screenpal.com/watch/cZjjr9V92Ih
• ATLAS Survey: REQUIRED Survey to complete after training video: https://forms.office.com/r/WMpr9hK2x2
• Downloading the browser: Go to www.ATLASportal.com, CLICK on Technology Coordinators, scroll down the Secure Browsers.
If your student has not completed their IXL or Lexia time this week, please do so this weekend. I will pull a report for time on Tuesday & it will be a grade.

Weekly Update || 8.26-8.30
Happy Friday families!
We’ve made it through the 2nd week of school and have knocked out a HUGE piece of our beginning of year STAR! So what does that mean? We get to start with our normal live class connects next week! WOOHOO!!
Next week, we will have our Tier 1 (Whole group) Math on Monday & ELA on Tuesday.
Wednesday, we will have a one-off class connect for us to work through the practice pieces of ATLAS that we will be using in the coming weeks for a required piece from the state. Learning coaches, you MUST be there with your student to help them navigate through this.
Before Wednesday, please take time to work through the pieces listed below if you have not already.
• ATLAS Training: REQUIRED Training Video (start here): https://go.screenpal.com/watch/cZjjr9V92Ih
• ATLAS Survey: REQUIRED Survey to complete after training video: https://forms.office.com/r/WMpr9hK2x2
• Downloading the browser: Go to www.ATLASportal.com, CLICK on Technology Coordinators, scroll down the Secure Browsers. You will follow those STEPS!
Also beginning next week will be required IXL (Math) and Lexia. Your student must spend at least 1 hour/week in each platform. This will be a grade each week. Upon using these platforms, PLEASE make sure that it is your STUDENT working and not the learning coach. These platforms are adaptive and we want to ensure that each student is receiving what they need (and not what the LC needs). Please take time EARLY IN THE WEEK this week to complete these pieces to get the initial pieces completed. You can find snips below of where to access these if you are unsure.
Thursday & Friday, we will work hard to wrap up STAR. We MUST get this completed next week. I will have this schedule to you no later than Monday afternoon (hopefully sooner) if your student is missing a piece for this.
Weekly Update || 8.19-8-23
Happy Friday, families!
I hope that you have had a WONDERFUL first week of school. I know it may have felt a little bit crazy (I know it did for me some days 😉), but know that after the first couple of weeks, things begin to calm down.
For those of you that are new to my homeroom, I want to give a BIG WELCOME!! You can find our beginning of year orientation recording down below.
Next week will look different for us than most weeks as we will be working hard to complete beginning of year STAR testing. This is a launching point for us at the beginning of year showing us the areas that each student needs focus in. This is a piece that helps us drive instruction to what your student NEEDS (vs. things they may already know).
There are 3 buttons linked below. If you have not completed these items, please take time to do so today before you close out for the weekend.
We've had a large increase in students at ARVA this week (woohoo). This is so exciting, but does change up some classes as I had previously had them organized. With this, hang tight til next week on times/schedules for classes for once we get rolling. As soon as I have things finalized, I will have them to you!
ATLAS:
Some of you may have heard about ATLAS, others of you may have not. I did not want to overwhelm you with this this first week of school. For those of you that are comfortable with this or go-getters, you can work through the things below. For those of you feeling slightly overwhelmed with the first day – we will work through these in the coming week.
Everyone will be using ATLAS this year! You will need a Secure browser downloaded on your computer. I am sure many of the K12 computers (school computers) already have it on there! I am linking all the information you need below!
• ATLAS Practice: http://www.ATLASportal.com then you will click on "students and families" at the top...scroll down to Practice
• ATLAS Training: REQUIRED Training Video (start here): https://go.screenpal.com/watch/cZjjr9V92Ih
• ATLAS Survey: REQUIRED Survey to complete after training video: https://forms.office.com/r/WMpr9hK2x2
