Change a dog's Life.

Dear Viz Whizz Rescue family,
Happy New Year! If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that the VWD Rescue community is unstoppable. One hundred and fifty dogs got their second chance last year because you kept showing up, sharing our posts, donating, and welcoming pups into your homes. As for 2026, we're already off to a busy start and in just the first week, six more dogs have curled up in new beds, with new families.
This month’s newsletter is full with updates and you’ll find profiles of dogs who are still searching for their forever people, plus a heads-up that we’ll be adding new intakes to the website soon at www.vizwhizzdogsrescue.org
Right now, we have 9 ex-breeding dogs in foster care, all needing extra TLC. Donations are critical at the moment, every bit helps us provide the urgent care these dogs deserve.
Looking ahead, we’re gearing up for our very first birthday on February 28th! We’ll also be hosting our Spring Silent Auction soon, and would love your help. If you’ve got items to donate or want to get involved, email fundraising@vizwhizzdogsrescue.org and Pamela will fill you in on the details.
Here’s to another year of making happy endings happen together.
With gratitude,

Dunbar Dog Bite Scale
At Viz Whizz Dogs Rescue, safety and education go hand in hand with everything we do. Some of the dogs who come into our care have bite histories. We work one-on-one with former owners, and other dog experts to put together the full story for each dog. Every dog comes with their own unique background, what they’ve been through shapes the kind of support and environment they’ll need to feel safe, adjust, and thrive.
To make our intake process and adoption placements as transparent as possible, moving forward we will now include the Dunbar Dog Bite Scale number in all our bite history adoption posts. Sharing this with you isn’t about labeling dogs; it’s about giving you a clear, honest picture and helping more people understand what the Dunbar Scale actually means.
What’s the Dunbar Dog Bite Scale?
Created by veterinary behaviorist Dr. Ian Dunbar, this scale rates bite incidents from Level 1 (a snap or air-bite, no skin contact) all the way to Level 6 (severe or fatal injury). It’s based on what really happened, not just calling a dog “aggressive.”
How do we use it?
For Intakes: The scale helps us piece together bite history, spot any known triggers, and build a handling and training plan that’s right for each dog.
For Adoption: It sets the stage for clear, upfront conversations. Potential adopters can see exactly what a dog needs and decide if it’s a good fit. Whenever possible, we connect new adopters with the dog’s previous owners, so everyone’s starting from a place of openness and trust..
DOGS LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME
Meet Max - Concord, New Hampshire
Max is a gentle, older Vizsla who’s just learning how to enjoy life after six years in a breeding kennel. He’s still discovering what it means to be a dog—when he first arrived in foster care, he was so scared he had to be carried inside and took days to relax. But with patience and kindness, Max blossoms into a loving companion. He sticks close to his people, loves cuddling, and enjoys short strolls through the woods or on the beach. While lower-energy than most Vizslas, he’s started playing with his foster sister and has even gotten the zoomies a few times.
Max is friendly with adults, great with kids, neutral with cats, and isn’t bothered by noises like fireworks. He greets visitors warmly and loves meeting new people. He’s neutered, up to date on vaccines, and finishing Lyme treatment. He’s underweight at 62 lbs. but should fill out soon. Max has limited vision, which makes him cautious in new situations.
Training is ongoing—he’s learning housetraining, basic commands, and crate manners. He needs supervision around tempting items like remotes, socks, and food.
Max’s ideal home will have patient adults (preferably men, though he likes everyone), another friendly dog for support, and older kids who understand his vision limitations. He sometimes needs help with stairs or when he’s nervous. Above all, Max needs time, love, and someone who’ll let him be part of daily life. Special thanks to Elyse, his foster mom, and Paya, his foster sister, for helping Max come out of his shell.

Meet Samson - Tuscon, Arizona
Samson is Ready to Go Home in Early January! Currently in Tucson, AZ (Board & Train until January 11th.) Samson needs a new home in early January. He’s waiting in Tucson, working hard with Board & Train Complete Transformations Dog Training - Southern Arizona, and he’s ready for someone experienced to step up. If you want a goofy, outdoorsy companion who lives to be by your side and you’re able to give structure and patience in return, this is your dog.
Samson is a 5.5-year-old male Vizsla, about 65 pounds, neutered. Born in May 2020, he’s silly, affectionate, and happiest exploring a trail or crashing on the couch beside his person. He’s a fan of car rides, swims, fetch, and pretty much any chance to sniff around outside. He’s e-collar trained for responsible off-leash fun and walks nicely on a figure 8 lead with clear rules. He’s got his basics down cold: housebroken, crate trained, and reliably follows sit, stay, come, leave it, and more. New people? He’s polite as long as they respect his boundaries. You’ll need to be his only pet and have a home without kids, he isn’t a candidate for sharing his space with either.
Let’s be real: Samson isn’t the perfect easy-going dog. He’s had trouble with resource guarding (food, toys, crate, favorite people), and there have been three bites—one needing minor first aid. His professional trainer says his bite inhibition is good, with risk on the lower end (Dunbar 1–2). He needs an adult home with a confident, experienced handler who can manage a dog with this history. Off-leash dogs racing up to him can be stressful, but he can enjoy dog friends if introductions are slow and managed.
Health-wise, he’s thriving: up-to-date on vaccines, microchipped, heartworm prevention, daily probiotics, Prozac for anxiety and guarding, and a little Apoquel for allergies. He’s not wild about baths or having his paws touched, but tolerates it. He eats out of a slow feeder to prevent gulping.
Samson is all heart. He’ll give back as much love as you’ve got to give him (maybe more), and he will absolutely stick to you like glue. What he needs is a fresh start with folks who know working breeds and resource-guarding, who can keep to a routine, and who want a loyal, active, silly companion to share their adventures.

Meet Mischa - Pearland, Texas (Adoption pending)
Meet Mischa, a sweet 7 year old Vizsla living in Pearland, TX, and ready to join the Viz Whizz Dogs Rescue program! With two babies under two in her house, keeping up with her energy has become a challenge.
At about 50 pounds, Mischa is a friendly, playful, and affectionate girl. Spayed & up to date on vaccines. She loves being around older kids, men, and women, and she’s happiest when she’s part of the action, whether that’s riding in the car, going for a swim, or hiking on the trails. Housebroken and crate trained, Mischa is used to family life; she’s allowed on furniture, sleeps in her dog bed or yours, and knows how to make herself comfortable.
Mischa adores learning tricks and is extremely treat-motivated, anything for a snack, really! She knows a whole lineup of commands: sit, stay, focus, lay down, head down, leave it, patience (she’ll balance a treat on her nose!), twirl, tunnel (runs between your legs), sit pretty, roll over, bang, paw, boop, and even “give me a kiss” (she’ll nudge your cheek with her nose). Hide a toy or treat, and she’ll happily search for it if you ask, “Where is it?” She lives for mental games and is always eager to show off.
While Mischa is very well-socialized with people, she can be a little reactive with other dogs, especially if they approach her quickly or she’s on a leash and can’t move away. She is generally at ease with most Vizslas and smaller dogs but would do best with thoughtful introductions, and currently shares her home with another big dog. She’s in great health, spayed, microchipped, current on for heartworm, flea, and tick prevention, and her nails are kept trimmed (she prefers a buffer to clippers). Her diet is Acana’s lamb and pumpkin, one cup in the morning, one cup at night, and yes, she’ll remind you if you’re late!
Typical Vizsla quirks? Mischa can’t resist “counter surfing” if there’s food in reach, and she LOVES stuffed animals … mostly for tearing them apart. She needs regular exercise and loves playtime, so an active family (or someone who loves long walks and fun training sessions) would be her dream come true. Letting her go is extremely hard for her family, but they know she’ll thrive with someone who can give her time, adventures, and lots of love.

Meet Gus - Schertz, Texas
A handsome 5-year-old male - Vizsla-mix with a true hunting spirit. Gus is joining the Viz Whizz Dogs rescue program through no fault of his own—his natural instincts simply don’t mix with his family’s chickens, which are a critical part of their livelihood. It’s a tough situation, but everyone wants what’s best for Gus.
Gus has a huge heart when it comes to people. He’s loving and affectionate—always ready for a hug when he gets excited. He’s comfortable around adults, teens, and children, and is happiest when he’s running free or chasing a ball. Gus is calm and well-mannered inside the house, loves wearing his collar, and is crate trained. He’s housebroken, used to a leash, and enjoys relaxing on the furniture.
Gus is a very clever dog who loves a job to do—he excels at search games if you give him a challenge. He knows his basic commands (sit, stay, watch, fetch, drop, and stop) and is obedient. While he’s a loyal friend to humans, Gus prefers to be the only animal in the home and would do best in a pet-free environment where he can let his hunting instincts shine in a safe way. He’s got a stubborn streak when it comes to clipping his nails (he’s not a fan of having his paws touched!) and likes his meals his way. He’s microchipped for safety and usually eats once a day, but also enjoys free feeding.
Gus is looking for a fresh start in a home where he can be the center of attention and have plenty of room to run. He’s sweet and loving with people, alert and protective when he senses a threat, but never acts out—just gives a gentle warning. He’s not at fault for ending up in rescue; he simply needs an environment better suited to his talents and energy.
If you’d like to apply or have an app on file let us know.
Meet Willie - Lago Vista, Texas.
Male purebred Vizsla, 5 years old, 69lbs - neutered, up to date on vaccines. Like most Vizslas, Willie lights up when his people get home—he’s bursting with energy, often bouncing and showing off just how happy he is to see you. Once he settles down, Willie just wants you to pet him and soak up your attention. He’s trainable, sits on command, comes when called, and is comfortable on a collar and leash. Willie is fully housebroken, crate trained, and has no problem making himself comfortable on furniture.
Willie’s family deeply loves him, but their home has proven to be a challenging environment for him. He struggles with resource guarding around food and toys, and can get reactive on leash. Over the past months, Willie has bitten a few members of his family—nipping wife and son (neither case broke the skin), and most recently biting his daughter, which required a couple stitches. Notably, these incidents all happened in situations where he would usually growl first, offering a clear warning. It was only after those warnings went unheeded or he felt overwhelmed that he escalated to biting. (Dunbar scale 2/3)
Willie’s owners will provide full veterinary records. They’re committed to seeing him thrive and know he’ll do best in a home with experienced handlers, clear structure, and steady support that understands resource guarding wirh no young children. Willie needs a fresh start, one where his boundaries are respected and he has the chance to become the wonderful companion he’s capable of being.
