Hey Berkley Bears! No summer plans?

Consider spending time exploring a career interest by attending a summer program for high school students offered by a college or university. Programs vary in terms of intensity, cost, length and location. Colleges will host their summer programs on campus or virtually. We are including the links to many college programs offered throughout the US. Please note that there are many other colleges that offer Pre-College Summer programs not included in the list. You can do an internet search to find other programs as well.

While we encourage you to explore your options for summer experiences, and we help by collecting information for you, we cannot endorse any of the programs below. Many of these programs have early deadlines and fill up quickly. Scholarships are often available. This list is a work in progress as many schools add new offerings all the time!

Please also note that because many of these programs are "pay to play" type experiences, most of the time, they do not give a student an advantage when it comes to admission into the college. These are great opportunities to explore career interests, make connections, and experience a glimpse of college life. Spending your summer working or volunteering can also be an incredible way to build your resume and life experience.

If you have any questions, please contact Shareze Sain, College and Career Counselor at Berkley High School.

Why are internships for high school students a good idea? Why are internships for high school students a good idea?

from the College Essay Guy...

Most high school summer internships are unpaid (womp, womp). So why would you want to work for free when you can wait tables or life guard for cold hard cash? Internships are a great way to explore your interests before you commit to a major. Nobody wants to spend three years and thousands of dollars pursuing a major and potential career only to discover that, actually, working in [insert industry here] really isn’t your cup of tea. Also--let’s be honest--high school summer internships can sometimes look good on college applications and they’ll help you get even better internships in college. Juniors! Apply by March 26th

The 2026 College Prep Scholars Program is now open! The deadline is Thursday, March 26. Start your application today >>

Applying to college can seem daunting, and the prospect of paying for it can seem even more overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. The College Prep Scholars Program equips high-achieving high school juniors from low-income backgrounds with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to apply to top colleges.

Why apply as a junior? Being a College Prep Scholar is a notable distinction that shows our college partners that you are a competitive candidate for admission. In addition, your application will automatically carry over for the National College Match when you’re a senior, giving you a head start on applying for a full four-year scholarship to our college partners. College Prep Scholars are almost six times more likely than other applicants to receive full four-year scholarships through the National College Match.

Awards for College Prep Scholars may include:

  • A full scholarship to a college summer program hosted by Emory, UChicago, Yale, and more.
  • Quest for Excellence Awards, such as $1,000 for a new laptop or other resources to help the student enhance their college application.
  • Exclusive access to a QuestBridge National College Admissions Conference — an invite-only event featuring workshops and a college fair with our college partners.
  • Exclusive college essay workshop.
  • Campus visits or other opportunities from QuestBridge college partners.
  • Specialized guidance and resources for the college application process.
  • Peer-to-peer support in an online community.

For 16 years Boston University College of Communication has offered this program to high school students to teach them core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing, focusing on hands-on experience in and around Boston and their home communities. Parents and students enjoy hearing that no third-party vendors are involved, and they can experience an authentic pre-college experience at a college on their list.

Students decide if they would like to attend our program in-person or virtually.

If you have a student who wants a real college experience this summer and wants to pursue a communication degree, encourage them to learn more by visiting www.summerjournalism.org and applying soon, as limited seats are available for our in-person sessions.

Our mission

Founded in 1946, the High School Journalism Institute serves as a continuing education outreach program for both in-state and out-of-state secondary school students and teachers. HSJI provides a number of learning opportunities annually to achieve this service function:

  • A series of intensive journalistic non-credit five-day workshops each summer intended primarily for staff members of secondary school media outlets as well as for high school students wishing to explore journalism as an academic or career interest.
  • Several summer journalism workshop opportunities, some carrying graduate credit, for high school teachers.

Summer Scholars participants spend two intensive weeks on Notre Dame's campus taking a challenging college-level course taught by Notre Dame faculty. We keep the classes small and personal attention from Notre Dame faculty high. The coursework is a true preview of college academics—it is both rigorous and rewarding, and students could earn one transferable college credit upon the completion of a program track. Students collaborate on coursework outside designated class times as they would in any college setting. There is also ample time to enjoy the social facets of college life, especially those unique to Notre Dame.

Purdue University's Pre-Freshman and Cooperative Education (PREFACE) is a 1-week, 1-credit residential summer workshop for rising high school sophomores and juniors. Focused on college readiness through math and engineering, PREFACE aims to engage underrepresented students. Participants explore engineering careers, engage in hands-on projects, and learn about Purdue's 18 engineering majors while living on campus and connecting with students, faculty, and administrators.

The Multiethnic Introduction to Engineering (MITE) program was developed, in the summer of 1975, at Purdue University. Originally a two-week program, MITE is now a four-week, two-credit college simulation program modeled after the Freshman Engineering Academic Boot Camp that focuses on college readiness with a strong emphasis on math and engineering projects.
