The hiring process is underway, and we look forward to providing an update next week. Most of all, thank you to the staff, families and most of all, our students for the warm reception. Great CA Shakeout Drill
Tomorrow is the Great California ShakeOut!
This is a drill for staff and students to practice our response to a major earthquake and evacuation from the school building.
So what does this mean for your student?
At 10:17am we will play a recording over the loudspeaker saying “we are experiencing an earthquake” and “this is a drill.” This will cue the teachers, staff and students to “duck and cover.”
Students will remain in this position until they hear another announcement that the shaking has stopped and that it is safe to come out.
Once this happens, our Site Security team will be doing a walk through of our buildings to make sure that there are no obstacles preventing egress. Once this check is complete, classes will be instructed to evacuate to the field.
While students are on the field, we will be setting up our incident command structure and staff members will be shifting around once they account for all of their students and hand them off to another adult for supervision.
At this time our First Aid, Student Release, Search and Rescue and Incident Command teams will be getting set up and initiating their work to make sure that everyone is accounted for, safe and that any medical needs are supported. The incident command team coordinates both internal teams as well as externally with the district incident command team.
The team that you need to know the most about is the student release team. This team sets up on the lower playground near the Winsor Ave Gate. During a real emergency, this team will be working hard to release students to authorized adults, and to note who they are going with and where they are going. This is going to require significant patience on the part of parents and caregivers as we want to release every child methodically and with great attention to detail.
*TOMORROW IS A DRILL ONLY. DO NOT COME DURING THE DRILL TO PICK UP YOUR STUDENT*
Please note that tomorrow between 10:15 and 11:00 no one will be available in the office to answer the phones (just as would be the case in a real emergency situation).
Below are a few reminders for what you should do to prepare for an emergency, as well as what to do in the event of an actual emergency:
Make sure your emergency contacts are up to date in Infinite Campus. List anyone who you are comfortable releasing your child to in an emergency in the “Non-Household Contacts” section. Here are instructions. Only people on this list will be able to pick up your children in case of an actual emergency.
Let your children know who those people are, so that if they are getting picked up they aren’t surprised or worried about going with those individuals.
When you come to pick up your child in the case of an emergency, please come to the Winsor Ave. gate with your ID and be ready to be patient. We will be systematic about the release of students to ensure that we have accounted for everyone. This is for the safety of all of our students.
Please do not call the school. In an emergency, no one will be available to answer the phone.
Thank you 5th Grade Parents!
The Wildwood Staff loved the Teacher Appreciation Lunch last week. Thank you!

Prepare for Wildwood’s Fall Book Fair!
The 2024 Wildwood Book Fair kicks off on October 21st! Remember that 50% of all sales goes back to support the Wildwood library!
Monday October 21 3-5 PM
Tuesday October 22 3-5 PM
Wednesday October 23 5:30-7:30 PM
with Mister Softee Truck and Read-Aloud with Ms. Ludmer!
Thursday October 24 3-6:30 PM
Friday October 25 3-4:30 PM
1. Sign up to Volunteer! We need help setting up the actual fair, operating the register during book fair hours, and packing up at the end. We rely heavily on volunteers to make this happen, so please sign up if you can! This year we’re also asking if you can’t volunteer your time, to please consider donating money to help fund the raffle prizes, treats, and decorations. Sign up here.
2. Remember our teachers: At the fair, there will be each teacher’s wish list set out. While you’re at the fair picking out books for your child, please purchase a book from your teacher’s wish list! There will be labeled teachers’ bins to place the paid books inside.
3. eWallet: If you’d like to not worry about cash or credit cards at the fair, a great option is to set up an e-wallet online. You simply add funds and/or invite family to contribute. Grandparents love to donate towards books! This is a great option if you want your child to stop by the fair on their own after school. At the time of checkout, the eWallet account can be looked up on the register and used towards one’s purchase. Set it up through the book fair webpage.
4. Catch a "read aloud" with Ms. Ludmer on Wednesday 10/23 at 6:00 pm! Our Head Librarian, Ms. Ludmer, will be reading a lively piece for all to enjoy. The reading will most likely be outside in the courtyard so please dress accordingly! Cookies and milk will be passed around!
Stay updated through the Book Fair webpage.

Nurse Update
Dear Elementary Families,
As some of you may already be aware, there have been several cases of pertussis (whooping cough) recently reported at Piedmont High School.
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that circulates annually, but becomes more widespread every 5 or so years.
While 100% of our elementary and middle school students are fully vaccinated against pertussis, immunity can wane over time rendering people susceptible to contracting it. It is generally treated with a five-day course of antibiotics.
Pertussis is a reportable condition, and as such cases are investigated and notifications are managed by the Alameda County Public Health Department. High risk groups include infants under a year of age, and pregnant women in their third trimester.
We are letting you know that pertussis is circulating in Piedmont, as it is elsewhere in California and the US, so you are aware and can be in contact with your healthcare provider should anyone in your household develop cold symptoms followed by a persistent cough.
There have been no reported cases to date in any of our elementary schools or the middle school. This is for general public health information only. To learn more about pertussis, please view this link to the CDC, or contact your healthcare provider.
Thanks and be well!

Our Lost and Found is overflowing! Please stop by the lost and found near the front entrance (and at Schoolmates) to check for missing clothing items. We will lay out items in front during conference week and will be donating them in November.

Halloween is around the corner, and there’s fun for everyone at Wildwood! Please be on the lookout for a festive photo backdrop, presented by volunteers, that will be available on campus for before-school photos.
In addition all (including costumed dogs) are invited to join a festive Community Coffee! After drop-off, please gather from 8:30-9:15 at the benches on Wildwood Avenue at Prospect for coffee and treats.
Dogs are always welcome at Community Coffee, but we’d love to celebrate our furry friends dressed in their Halloween best for this holiday edition!

DEIB Updates
Curriculum and Training Update
There have been a number of steps taken with respect to identifying anti-bias and anti-racist resources and practices. We have an active DEIB subcommittee that meets regularly and is currently working to identify anti-bias practices and resources staff use in all of our schools order to build out a comprehensive plan of action specific to grade-levels. District leadership has partnered with the Chief of Whole Child Programs at Alameda County Office of Education who specializes in anti-bias practices and resources and will provide elementary and middle school training at upcoming CCT meetings. Lastly, the district has a contract with National Equity Project who will be leading training for leaders and staff to align practices related to topics such as implicit bias and cultural competency.
Behavior and Support Matrix
Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Ariel Dolowich, has been working closely with site leaders on the development of PUSD's Behavior & Support Matrix. This is a comprehensive living document for administrative purposes related to behavior incidents that occur on PUSD campuses and will be presented with context at a Community Meeting on October 22nd (location: in-person @ Havens Elementary library, 4pm, and a virtual link is forthcoming). Community feedback is welcome.
