About Abbotsford: A Diverse Tapestry, our June 8th Books and Borscht Feature Book
Abbotsford’s diverse social and cultural tapestry and shares different perspectives on city history with the intent of celebrating and strengthening community relationships through awareness. Written in the midst of a time of powerful social change, the authors hope this work contributes to the kind of education and learning that will nurture empathy and unity, thereby supporting us in being the best neighbours we can be to one another.
The book captures many of Abbotsford’s stories but the work to document and share them has just begun. “The Fraser Valley subsequently became home to waves of immigrants, who were also sometimes refugees. This book follows the emergence of these new communities: the South Asians, who arrived in the Valley even before 1900, looking for new opportunities and finding them, despite ongoing racism from European settlers; the Mennonites, fleeing desperate conditions in the totalitarian Soviet Union and adapting to a strange new culture; the Japanese, stripped of their lands and possessions during the Second World War but reacting with dignity and strength; the Hungarian refugees forced from home and heritage by a government with no notion of what freedom might mean.
This book tells the stories of many other communities that have shaped, and continue to shape, the diverse tapestry that is Abbotsford. A Diverse Tapestry is incomplete, of course, since there are many other stories waiting to be told. Regrettably, there are gaps. The project of telling our story will, and must, continue.” says editor, Robert Martens.
Lemxyaltexw Chief Dalton Silver of Semá:th First Nation endorses the project: “I believe it's history making in itself to have the Indigenous Peoples and some of our perspectives included in a book such as this. It's been too long that our history has gone untold and I'm very grateful that some is included here.”
--Excerpted from a press release that was publicized when the book came out in 2021 from Kris Foulds, Curator of Historical Collections, The Reach Gallery Museum.
About Hugo Unger, Our June 15th Books and Borscht Featured Author:
When I was 2 years old my parents who were declared to be children of "Kulaki"; had to flee the area and ended up in Ukraine. My father got a job in a Russian town, teaching mathematics and German language.
When the German army occupied the area in 1941 we moved into the Mennonite colony of Sagradowka where he continued teaching in German for 2 years until we were evacuated to the west.
When I was 12 my father was inducted into the German army and we saw him again after 22 years in 1966 in Canada. Meanwhile my mother, 2 younger sisters and I ended up in1948 in a Mennonite Colony in Paraguay. The colony was still in the pioneer phase. A few acres had beencleared in the forested area but most large tree trunks werestill lying as they had fallen.
We seeded corn and other crops by hand with hoes by climbing over the tree trunks.
After two years of teaching in a Hutterite school in Manitoba, we embarked on a 4 year study at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg. After 2 more years of teaching in Moosehorn a town on Lake Manitoba we set aside 2 years of teaching under the MB Christian Service program in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Upon our return from Brazil I signed up in the geography department in Morden, Manitoba where we remained the following 20 years.
Retirement after 30 years of teaching was the next adventure. We accepted a full time volunteer positions with MCC and continued to serve for the next 6 years, 4 in Abbotsford and in Germany for 2 more years with Mennonite immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
On now until June 16th: "Resurfacing: Mennonite Floor Patterns" with Artist, Margruite Krahn!
