Hermosa School Family Newsletter
September 23-26
Hornet Families,
What a great week to be a Hornet! We had a great Homecoming Week here in Hermosa! It's hard to believe that next week starts a new month and as we get into October we settle into our routines. We have a bunch of picture from Homecoming Week below so make sure to check those out and we will continue to share pictures on our Facebook page and the CSD app Live Feed!

Special Education Team: Who's on it?
Eligibility for Special Education
- An Eligibility Determination Team (EDT), which includes educators, specialists, administrators, and parents, meets to review the evaluation results.
- The team makes a decision on whether the student qualifies for special education services based on:
- The presence of a qualifying disability.
- The need for specially designed instruction.
- Additional information from parents, teachers, and specialists.
Parent Participation and Consent
- Parents play a critical role in the eligibility process. They are provided with a copy of the evaluation and are included in the team discussions.
- If the student is found eligible, parents must provide written consent before special education services can begin.
Development of an IEP
- If the student is determined eligible, the next step is the creation of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which outlines the student’s educational goals and the services they will receive.
- The IEP must be developed within 30 calendar days of the eligibility determination.
Reevaluation
- Once a student is found eligible, a reevaluation must occur at least every three years to determine if the student continues to qualify for special education services.
- However, a reevaluation can be requested sooner if parents or educators feel that the student's needs have changed.
Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Graveman
What a fabulous Homecoming Week! It has been great seeing our students show their school pride all week long in participating in dress-up days and looking forward to our fun Thursday filled with activities to celebrate our school!
We are officially kicking off Character Counts next week and looking for our most Trustworthy students for October. Character Counts defines Trustworthy as:
Be honest. Don't deceive, cheat, or steal
Have integrity. Do what you say you'll do
Keep your promises
Be loyal. Stand by your values
How can you help reinforce our Character Counts value of trustworthiness at home?
In addition to activities and discussions related to trustworthiness, classroom counseling lessons in the next two weeks will re-introduce students to regulation. Regulation is what we do to help control our thoughts, behavior, and emotions. In other words, what we do to help ourselves feel better when we have a strong emotion. All students will watch a quick video explaining what happens in our brain when we feel a strong emotion and become dysregulated. The video explains this process as "flipping our lid." When we flip our lid, our logic center (top of our brain) can't communicate with the emotion part of our brain (lower brain). This can make it hard to think clearly, express our needs, avoid conflict, focus, and much more. Identifying ways, we can regulate, and regularly practicing them, helps us bounce back quicker when we feel a strong emotion and become dysregulated. What strategies do you use to help regulate yourself?
