From the Directors

Dear Winter Park Band families,

Happy first week of school! We are so excited to see everyone back on campus Tuesday morning to kick off the 2026-2027 school year!

During classes this week, members will be reviewing the Band Handbook. An electronic version of the Band Handbook is available both on the Band website and each band, jazz, percussion, and color guard class's Canvas home page. Everyone will also bring home the Band Handbook & Standards of Excellence Acknowledgement Form, if you didn't pick it up already at Meet the Teacher this past Thursday. After reviewing the Handbook with parents/guardians, each member and at least one parent/guardian must complete the Acknowledgement Form with initials and signatures. The form is due back no later than Friday, 8/14.

We had a number of questions concerning instrument lockers at Meet the Teacher on Thursday. In exciting news, we are finally receiving our new Wenger instrument lockers as a part of the renovation! The only unfortunate part is that our current lockers are being removed beginning on August 18 and the new lockers are being delivered and installed the week of August 24. That being said, members will have a locker assigned to them this week to use temporarily until the new lockers are installed. All members need to have their marching band instrument with them on Tuesday, 8/11 for marching band rehearsal after school.

Our regular after school marching band rehearsals begin the first day of school on Tuesday, 8/11. Rehearsals will take place weekly on Tuesdays from 3:15 - 6:30 PM and game day afternoons from after school - 5:00 PM. This week our game day rehearsal will take place on Thursday, 8/13 from 2:45 - 5 PM because there is not a football game this week. On game days, Members will be fed between rehearsal and the game. As a reminder, these rehearsals only take place during the marching band portion of the year and continue only until Marching Band MPA on November 7.

Our first football game performance of the school year is Friday, August 21. This is an away game at Windermere HS. We will wear the Summer Uniform for this performance.

ATTENTION NEEDED:

Friday, August 7, the first financial obligations of the 2026-2027 school year came due - the first Fair Share Payment (all students), the Marching Band Shoe Payment (if needed), and the Extra Show Shirt (optional). We understand that there were some issues with the Extra Show Shirt item in particular, and we will be extending that deadline through the end of this coming week to Friday, August 14. Payments may be made on SchoolCashOnline.com or by check/cash turned into the Band office. If you would like to refresh your memory of "what is due when" for the school year, please visit www.winterparkhsband.com/register.html and click on the information packet under Step 3. Have questions? Email both wphsbandtreasurer@gmail.com and michael.clemente@ocps.net.

Fundraising: Please take note of the Sponsorships & Student Dedication Fundraiser section of the newsletter this week. Sponsorship collection deadlines have been extended, so get out there, ask our community for their support, and sell some ads!

Schedule Notes:

  • We also have a performance at the "Meet the Cats" Pep Rally next week on Thursday, 8/20. We will wear the summer uniform, same as the Premiere Show.
  • Our first football game performance is scheduled for Friday, 8/21. We will wear the Summer Uniform, same as the Premiere Show.

Let's make it a great first week of school!

Mr. Clemente & Ms. O'Rourke

From our Sponsorship Chair

🎺 Good News! We’ve Extended the Sponsorship Deadline! 🎉

We’ve heard from several families who wanted a little more time to connect with potential sponsors, so we are excited to announce that the sponsorship submission deadline has been extended through the end of August!

This new deadline aligns with the Student Dedication and Program Ad submission timeline, making it easier to submit everything together.

Remember:
- Every sponsorship sold earns 45% fundraising credit back to your student’s band account.
- Student Dedications earn 60% fundraising credit, which helps offset Fair Share and trip expenses.
- Businesses, family members, friends, and individuals can all become sponsors.
- Your own business or employer may qualify as a sponsor, as many companies support local schools and student programs.

If you have been meaning to reach out to a local business or know someone who would love to support the Winter Park High School Band, now is the perfect time. Every sponsorship helps provide instruments, music, travel opportunities, clinicians, and equipment for our students.

If you have any questions about sponsorship opportunities, fundraising credits, or need additional forms, please reach out!

Let’s make the most of these extra few weeks and finish strong! Thank you for continuing to support our band program.

"Step Up" Your Sound with Intermediate/Professional Instruments

This time of year, many families consider purchasing a higher quality instrument for their student. While the rental instruments or student instruments many students had during middle school served them well during that time, high school music and musicians need instruments with higher quality make and materials to continue to improve. Please especially do not buy an instrument for your student from discount websites like Amazon. We music teachers refer to instruments sold on those websites as ISOs - Instrument Shaped Objects.

If you are able and considering a "step-up" instrument for your student (sometimes referred to as "intermediate" or "professional" instruments by manufacturers), please feel free to reach out for guidance. We will be happy to point you in the right direction and give options for quality instruments at fair prices.

Private Lessons - Invest in Your Future!

Whether a student is learning a musical instrument to pursue a career in music, or simply for personal musical fulfillment and recreation, private lessons are one of the best investments that a parent can provide for their musical child. When working with a private teacher, students receive one-on-one instruction from a professional musician who specializes on that instrument.

Unlike a full band rehearsal experience, studying with a private teacher focuses in on the student’s individual needs. Students who study privately once a week from a professional musician are usually those who excel and find Band more enjoyable. These students frequently earn positions in honor groups like All-State and All-County, and make entry into our more advanced bands like Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble I. Some even go on to earn college scholarships, even if they are not majoring in music!

Below is a link to a list of local private teachers. This list is not exhaustive, and there may be other individuals who are not on the list. If you are a private teacher who would like to be added to our list (or deleted), or know a private teacher who should be added, please contact Mr. Clemente at michael.clemente@ocps.net.
