September Spotlight: 30 Days of Kindness at OHS

At Owensboro High School, we believe kindness is contagious and it starts with us. Research shows that kindness is best learned through experiencing the joy of being on the receiving end of a kind gesture. That’s why throughout the month of September, we’re challenging every Red Devil to look for opportunities to spread kindness each day—at school, at home, and in our community—through our OHS Kindness Calendar.

Teaching and practicing kindness brings powerful benefits: increased happiness, stronger self-esteem, a sense of belonging, reduced stress, improved focus, greater peer acceptance, and fewer instances of bullying. Even small acts of kindness can spark gratitude and make a lasting impact.

We invite our students, staff, and families to join us for 30 days of kindness this month. Together, let’s create a ripple effect of positivity that will continue long after September ends.

Suicide Prevention Awareness at OHS

Addressing the social-emotional needs and mental health of our students is a top priority at Owensboro High School. During the week of September 8, our school counselors, student assistance coordinator, and youth service center staff will provide every OHS student with important information and resources on suicide prevention. Following these presentations, students will also have the opportunity to meet individually with a counselor if they request additional support.

OHS will be using the evidence-based Signs of Suicide (SOS) program, which helps students:

  • Understand that depression is treatable

  • Learn to recognize depression and suicide risk factors

  • Practice the ACT strategy: Acknowledge, Care, Tell a trusted adult

  • Identify who at school they can go to for help when needed

This program ensures OHS meets the Kentucky state requirement that all middle and high school students receive annual suicide prevention awareness by September 15.

We encourage families to learn more about this program and how to support students at home. For additional information from our OPS District Counseling Director, please click the buttons below and review the SOS for Parents Infographic to see how you can ACT.

📞 Remember: The Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988.

Together, we can ensure every Red Devil feels supported, valued, and never alone.

Parent-Teacher Conferences – September 4, 2025 🗓️

Mark your calendar! Our first Parent-Teacher Conference of the 2025–2026 school year will take place on Thursday, September 4, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at OHS.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are a valuable opportunity to:

  • Discuss your child’s academic progress and growth

  • Share and receive insights about learning habits, strengths, and challenges

  • Strengthen the home-school connection that supports every student’s success

In addition to meeting with teachers, families are invited to take part in several special events happening that evening...

OHS Youth Service Center Open House
Parents are invited to stop by the OHS Youth Service Center (Room 147) anytime between 4 - 7pm to meet Ms. Stewart and Mr. Hogg and discover the wide range of services and supports available for Red Devil families. From academic and basic needs assistance to family resources and enrichment opportunities, the YSC is here to help students thrive. Parents will also have the chance to complete the HIF forms if they haven’t already done so this year.

Post-Secondary Planning for Senior Parents
Calling all senior parents! Join us in the Media Center at 5pm for an important session with Mr. Ryun Schienbein, OHS Kentucky College Coach. This session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to guide your student as they plan for life after high school whether that path leads to a college or university, trade or vocational program, the workforce, or military service. Gain insights, ask questions, and leave with resources to support your student’s next steps with confidence.

Conversations with the Counselors

Join the OHS School Counseling Team in Room 131 for an interactive session on how parents can stay connected and informed through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Counselors will walk families through the tools available to monitor grades, attendance, schedules, and more ensuring you always have the information you need to support your student’s success. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, explore features, and build confidence in using this valuable resource.

When families and teachers work together, students thrive. We look forward to seeing you at OHS on Thursday, September 4!

High Attendance Day – September 9!

At Owensboro High School, we believe every Red Devil belongs here and attendance matters. When students show up every day, they build stronger relationships, stay on track academically, and feel more connected to our school community. That’s why we’re excited to join schools across the commonwealth in celebrating High Attendance Day on Tuesday, September 9.

On September 9, Kentucky schools will compete to see who can achieve the highest percentage of students present. We want OHS to continue the tradition of excellence we’re known for by showing that Red Devils lead the way in academics, athletics, spirit, and commitment!

To make it even more fun, High Attendance Day will be Pajama Day at OHS! Students and staff are encouraged to wear their favorite school-appropriate pajamas, and everyone will enjoy a special treat during Advisory as we celebrate the importance of being here, every day.

Set your alarms, lay out your PJs, and help us hit 100% attendance on Sept. 9! Show the state that You Belong at OHS! ❤️🖤

Why School Attendance Matters: You Belong at OHS 📚❤️

At Owensboro High School, we believe every student has a place, a purpose, and a future... because You Belong here! That’s why regular school attendance matters so much.

When students are in school every day, they build stronger relationships, stay on track academically, and feel more connected to their school community. Missing just two days a month can add up quickly and make it harder to keep up with learning and friendships.

By showing up each day, Red Devils gain the knowledge, confidence, and support they need to succeed not only in high school, but in college, career, and life.

Together, let’s make daily attendance a priority and remind every student: Attendance Matters... You Belong at OHS!

Celebrating KY Ag Week at OHS

September 15 - 19 is Kentucky Agriculture Week, and our Red Devils are joining the celebration in a big way! On Monday, September 15, all OHS 9th grade students will participate in the OPS Agriculture Opportunities Showcase at the Owensboro Regional Farmers' Market.

This special event will give students the chance to grow through experience as they explore the many career pathways and opportunities available in the agriculture industry. With 10 community partners on site, students will learn firsthand about the vital role agriculture plays in our state’s economy and in our daily lives.

The Agriculture Opportunities Showcase is more than just a field trip—it’s a chance for our freshmen to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences, discover potential career interests, and better understand the impact agriculture has on our community and beyond.

At OHS, we’re proud to partner with local leaders to give our students opportunities that inspire, inform, and prepare them for the future.
