DBS students have been engaged in a variety of activities during our PE time. We have been bowling, played beach volleyball, finished our monthly fitness testing and are currently engaged in a month long gymnastics/tumbling and circus arts unit. We are learning about the various muscles that we are stretching and strengthening, while also trying to identify what activities are aerobic and anaerobic.
Passport to winter fun
If your child has been participating in the Passport to winter fun, those students who have made it to the 30 day mark should fill out the back flap of the passport and return to Mr. Hewitt by Monday to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. You can also scan the QR code on the flap and complete the form online.
BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR SUPER HERO’S
SUBJECT: Who wants to be a superhero?
Kids Heart Challenge is here! (Formally Jump Rope for Heart) Our students are learning how to keep their hearts and brains healthy and raising funds to help kids with special hearts, kids like Finn. Those students who either donate or Learn Hands only CPR will get an opportunity to don a cape and mask of their choice and get their picture taken and placed on the Super hero Wall of Fame!
We are looking forward to 3 challenges.
#1 Register:Goal is 125. If half of the students in the DBS school register for the mission, the DBS PE program will receive a $500 gift certificate to purchase additional PE equipment.
#2 Donate: All monies donated go directly to the American Heart Association to help those students with special hearts. Students will receive thank you gifts for different levels of donations
#3 Learn hands only CPR: Our goal is to get 30 students in the DBS community to get trained in Hands-Only CPR and know the steps in a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan
We're asking all families to register and complete Finn's mission to learn Hands-Only CPR. All students who register will receive a free wristband.
Here’s how you can help:
Register: Click here or download the AHA Schools app.
Complete Finn’s Mission: to learn Hands-Only CPR and the warning signs of stroke. Share with family and friends through social media, text and/or email so they too can learn how to save a life.
Thank you for supporting our school and students in saving lives!

Week 23: Breaking Stereotypes about Women
A stereotype is a widely held and simplified belief about a specific group. Groups are often stereotyped on the basis of sex, gender identity, race and ethnicity, nationality, age, socioeconomic status, language, and so forth. They are deeply embedded within social institutions and wider culture. Stereotypes and bias prevent us from seeing people as unique individuals with a range of characteristics that make them who they are. Instead, we end up putting people in boxes and feel uncomfortable when they don’t seem to fit in those boxes.
Too often we hear adjectives that describe women as nurturing, emotional, polite, weak, bossy, gossipy, ditzy, and organized. By contrast, men are stereotypically described as confident, arrogant, logical, practical, a leader, dependable, charming, and strong. Stereotypically masculine characteristics are frequently valued more highly than stereotypically feminine characteristics. Gender stereotypes can shape beliefs that women have about themselves, causing them to question their own abilities and possibly deterring them from male-dominated careers.
Besides gender, there are other identities that every individual has. When you have multiple identities that do not fit the conventional stereotypes, there will be pushback for you to fit in. For example, Mona Haydar is a Muslim woman who raps. Those identities don’t seem to fit together because it is not what we envision a woman, a Muslim, nor a rapper to be. She is all those things (and more!) and we can only understand that if we keep our minds curious and be open to thinking outside the box.
Check out this 4 minute interview where Mona Haydar talks about how she is offended by people’s shock when she tells people she is a poet turned MC rapper.
Want to hear more? Watch Mona Haydar’s music video called Wrapping my Hijab, where she addresses the stereotypes and microaggressions she faces as a Muslim woman rapper.
