Happy Friday!
We hope you all had a great week. We kicked off our PLUM fundraiser this week, please ask your kids to share info with you if you have not heard about this opportunity. Fall Fest is NEXT Friday! Please send in candy for Candy Wars! Additionally, your student's homeroom teachers have sent out a SignUpGenius for our Fall Class Parties which will be on Friday October 30th! Let us know if you can bring anything in! Thanks in advance!

Academic Updates
Reading - Ms. Eliason
Students worked hard this past week! We finished up Unit 2 in Benchmark this week. Those grades will be updated in the Google Classroom at the end of next week. We will be starting our next unit on Government and Citizenship next week, and there will be a lot of alignment with both Writing and Social Studies.
Math - Ms. Simon
Kodiak Bears, Black Bears, Grizzly Bears
You will notice that your student is following the order of operations using the acronym "GEMA." I understand that your initial reaction may be "what's wrong with PEMDAS, why can't we just teach math the old way?!" This is a fair question, so allow me to respond. PEMDAS is fine, if it is followed correctly. Unfortunately, many students misunderstand the acronym and apply multiplication before division in every case, even if division is presented first in the expression.
Therefore, I teach the order of operations using GEMA, which aligns with PEMDAS and reduces the confusion about which operation comes first in more complex expressions. Multiplication and division are inverse operations, collectively called “multiplicative operations.” I've included a chart below to show the two acronyms side-by-side, in hopes that this will help with the conversations at home. In class, we still reference PEMDAS, because it is widely known. But my goal is for students to truly understand the Order of Operations, whichever acronym they prefer.
Polar Bears
This week the Polar Bears spent time reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of positive and negative numbers. The students have been working incredibly hard with challenging questions and have spent a lot of time asking questions. We will review for the test on Monday and they will be taking the Topic 1 Assessment (7th) on Tuesday, October 27. We will then move into Algebra!
Writing - Mr. Crump
Next week students will be using their plans to draft, edit and revise their argumentative writing. I am looking forward to seeing everyones' arguments put together and fleshed out!
Science & Social Studies - Ms. Hines
During Social Studies this week, we wrapped up our notes on Mesoamerica. Students then began working on our first ever DBQ! Throughout this work, we will be analyzing the achievements of the Mayans in order to answer the question: What was their greatest accomplishment? On Friday, we collaboratively worked on a study guide for student's test next week. Students should be studying for this end of unit exam.
Mark your calendars: Our Unit 2 Assessment will take place on October 29th.

Fall Festival | October 30th
Next week is our Fall Festival we are in need of volunteers and trunks! If you would like to join us and volunteer, please fill out this form: SIGNUP GENIUS
Student Council has a Hot Dog Meal Deal for $8 the night of Fall Fest. Pre-Purchase is required by Wednesday October 28th.
Classroom Store
Our students will be using ClassBank this year, which is a digital classroom economy platform. At the end of each week, students will have the opportunity to purchase things with the money they earn from our classroom stores. Due to this, the 6th Grade Teachers are looking for items (candy, chips, fruit, fidgets, snacks, and little trinkets) to stock our classroom stores.
If you are able, please send items in with your students this week, or throughout the year!
Candy Wars!
It's time for the friendliest battle of the year. Candy Wars begins 10/1 and runs through 10/28. Students should bring in bags of wrapped candy; the bigger the bag, the better the battle.
All of this candy will be given out during our Fall Fest Trunk or Treat on October 30. We can't wait to see you there!
