Happy New Year!!! π₯³
Welcome Back!
Hope you all had a great Christmas break! Let's get this 2nd semester started!!!
Each week within the Weekly Update, start looking for a section called "The Check-In". This will be a section with information to help you through this crazy life we all live.
But FIRST....a few reminders.....
Cell Phone Policy:
- Cell phones must be turned off and stored away during instructional blocks. This includes having them silenced and placed in backpacks, lockers, or turned-in pouches.
- No cell phones are to go with you to the bathroom.
- Your cellphone may be taken and kept until either the end of the class period or sent to the office until the end of the day. Your parents may even be called to come pick up your phone, so please put your phone away.
- If you need to call a parent, ask your teacher - they have classroom phones and will let your use it (and if you do not know your parental unit's number, if you ask, they will probably let you look at your phone to get the number) and then use the classroom phone.
- Let's just all follow this rule.
Dress Code:
- Take your hood off, please.
- Please dress appropriately.
Tardies:
- In a nutshell....come to school on time and get to class, please. π
The Check-In: January - The Reset
Welcome Back! The Science of a Fresh Start π§ β¨
Happy New Year! Whether you spent the break sleeping until noon, traveling, or just recharging, we are heading into a new semester. Itβs normal to feel a mix of dread ("Ugh, alarm clocks") and excitement ("Okay, clean slate").
This week, we're talking about why "starting over" actually works for your brain and how to use it to your advantage without burning out by February.
The Science: What is the "Fresh Start Effect"? π
Did you know there is actual data behind why we make New Year's resolutions? Researchers at the Wharton School call it the "Fresh Start Effect."
They found that humans rely on "temporal landmarks" (like a birthday, a new year, or a new semester) to separate their "past self" from their "current self."
- The Data: People are significantly more likely to tackle goals immediately following a "landmark" data point
- The Takeaway: Your brain is currently wired to leave last semester's stress in the past. Use this natural momentum to reset your habits this week.
Weekly Challenge: The "One Word" Reset π
Forget long lists of resolutions that get broken by week two. This semester, we are trying something simpler.
Pick ONE WORD.
Choose a single word that represents how you want to feel or act this semester.
Examples: Focus. Balance. Brave. Rest. Finish.
Your Mission: Write that word on a sticky note and put it on your mirror or the front of your notebook. When you have a tough decision to make, ask: "Does this match my word?"

Remember, a fresh start doesn't mean you have to do it alone. If the transition back to school feels overwhelming, reach out.
