January 2026 Newsletter
Bring on the New Year Eagles! We've Got This!
On behalf of AHS, we hope you had the BEST holiday season with your families and friends.
Class of 2026, your graduation year has arrived: 2-0-2-6! We are excited for you. Keep focused. A semester is still a semester and these grades matter. You will be celebrated and it's important you participate in all of the rites of passage such as Prom, the DC trip, Awards Night, and more. Take advantage of making memories.
The path to college is something AHS does well. Our students access post-secondary education in high percentages. However, with soaring tuition costs, the changing job market, we find a need more than ever to provide this generation of students the opportunity to delve into highly skilled professions with advance training, not necessarily four-year degrees, with the opportunity to earn solid salaries. As a campus and learning community, we are carving out non-traditional pathways to careers that are in demand. Opportunities exist in ways not seen before. Pay close attention to our Program of Studies due out this month. Look for a guide to alternative pathways to college, careers, work, and military readiness as well.
Eagle proud,
Kristina Dobos Buller, Principal
Attendance Law Update - Refresher
Attendance law changed as HB96 has gone into effect. Please review the following changes:
Parent Notifications about absences (Excused and Unexcused) will go out sooner to households. A notification is made when a student reaches 3%.
Avon Local Schools will have a three tiered intervention plan to improving attendance. The thresholds are as follows: Tier I- 3%, Tier II- 7%, Tier III- 10%. This may include but is not limited to additional communication, informal meetings/talks, assigning a check-in for a friendly face, text message nudges and/or an Attendance Intervention Plan.
Medically excused absences are no longer exempt from the total % of hours.

Nurse's Corner
This is a reminder that proof of the Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine—or an exemption/waiver—is due by September 9, 2026 for all current juniors. Please be aware that students without the required documentation by this date may be subject to school exclusion in accordance with state guidelines.
To ensure your child meets Ohio’s immunization requirements, please submit documentation confirming completion of the Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine series.
State requirements are as follows:
-The first dose must be administered on or after your child’s 10th birthday. Any dose given before the 10th birthday is considered invalid by the state and will require your child to restart the series.
-The second dose is required on or after age 16. If your child received their first dose on or after their 16th birthday, only one dose is required to meet state guidelines.
-Please note that the state allows a 4-day grace period for vaccine administration. Any dose given outside of this 4-day window is considered invalid.
Vaccines can be administered at CVS, Walgreens, the health department or your child’s primary care office.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our health clinic at 440-695-0646 or reach out via email at nursesusanne@avoneagles.org
Thank you for your attention to this important health requirement.

High School Scheduling for 2026-2027 School Year
High school counselors will discuss scheduling with small groups of 9th, 10th and 11th graders in late January. At that time, the 2026 Program of Studies will be made available to students and parents.
These meetings will include:
- Review on how to select courses
- Counselors will recommend course progression in Math, Science, Fine Arts, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language and Electives
- Differences between a regular course, honors, AP and CCP
Additionally, each teacher of a core course will work with each student and make a course recommendation. Teachers will inform students on their professional evaluation of the next appropriate course whether it be honors, AP, a specific elective, etc. We highly encourage students to make use of this dedicated time with their current educators.
More information on the deadline to register for courses will be forthcoming.
Main Office Reminders
Attendance, Release Slips, Vacation...
- Please keep in mind that vacations during the school calendar are not encouraged. If your student must miss school, please remember to fill out a vacation form ahead of time.
- Click here for a copy of the vacation form. The form must be turned into the Main Office.
- If your student is leaving at some point during the day for an appointment, he/she must bring a note signed by his/her parent detailing what type of appointment he/she are going to i.e., doctor or dentist, and what time the student should be released. This note must be turned into the Main Office when the student returns to school, so that that student may receive a dismissal slip to be released from class.

AHS school fees for the 2025-2026 school year have been applied to each student's PowerSchool account.
Online payment may be made through https://payschoolscentral.com/ or checks made payable to "Avon Board of Education" can be sent to the attention of Ashley Davis at Avon High School.

School Closures - Message from the Superintendent
With the weather changing, we want to take this time to remind our families of our procedure when it becomes necessary to close Avon Schools due to inclement weather or other causes.
Below is how you will be alerted:
Superintendent, Michael Zalar will post on twitter - @DrMikeZalar and @AvonLocalSch
Email and Automated Phone Messages will be sent to all guardians of the students affected by the closure
District website is updated on the home page with school(s) affected by the closure
School closings via text messages to parents, students and staff who have signed up to receive text messages through SchoolMessenger
If you have not yet signed up to receive text messages through SchoolMessenger but would like to, you can participate in this free service just by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our school's short code number, 67587.
Our goal is to notify as early as possible so parents can make a plan. The decision to close school is typically made between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Please note that the automated phone messaging system can be used for different types of emergency notifications, so always be sure to listen to the message when it arrives.
