Title: nine, ten: A September 11 Story
Author: Nora Raleigh Baskin
AWARDS & NEWS
- Starred reviews from both Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly
- CBC/NCSS Notable Social Studies Trade Book
As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, I chose to read Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story by Nora Raleigh Baskin. This thoughtful middle-grade novel follows four young people from different parts of the world as their lives unfold in the days leading up to September 11.
What I found especially meaningful about this book is that it helps young readers understand this important moment in history through the eyes of kids their own age. The story focuses on friendship, family, everyday life, and how one event can change the world in ways people never expected. I remember where I was on September 11, and it is a day I will always remember. For those of us who lived through it, the memories can feel very personal. For kids who were not yet born, books like this provide an opportunity to learn about what happened and to understand why September 11 remains an important part of our history.
If this book makes you curious to learn more, our library has a September 11 book display with additional books for you to check out. I hope Nine, Ten encourages our students to ask questions, learn about history, and have conversations with the adults in their lives about an event that shaped our world.

Message from MJH Administration
Let's focus on the potential MJH has to be the best middle school in MCISD! We expect our students to come to school ready to learn. This means we need to support their educational time as a TEAM! Together, we can foster the best outcomes for our students. Our teachers develop engaging activities for students to prepare them for high school and beyond, whether it be a successful career or advancing their studies at the collegiate level.
Instilling school pride is what we aim to promote this school year! We want to continue our winning tradition in UIL, Fine Arts, and Athletics. There will be various activities planned during the school year, so please encourage your child to participate and make lasting memories at MJH.
Parents thank you for all you do! Let’s stay focused as a Patriot team and expect nothing but the best for our students.
