Hawlemont News
10/9/26
From the principal
Dear great people,
Fall has come quickly and with it, cool and wet weather. Checking the weather before you leave the house and guiding your child to bring appropriate layers will help them be prepared for all kinds of New England weather. Our kids have been very eager to rake, throw and play with the beautiful maple leaves.
Our October All School is Wednesday, 10/14 from 10:15-11. You are invited to attend the event and watch our students lead the school through the meeting. A handful of 5th and 6th graders will present the slogan work and students will vote on the choices to help us pick our school year writing catch phrase.
Next week, parent DIBELs reports will go home for all students giving you the beginning of year benchmark literacy data. A letter will accompany that and you are encouraged to reach out to me, Mrs. Todd, or your child's special education or classroom teacher with questions and concerns.
Take care,
Amber Tulloch

Should they stay or should they go?
When to keep your child home from school and when they will be sent home from school for respiratory symptoms and other conditions.
Keeping our students, staff, and community healthy
Presently there is a respiratory illness circulating. Help keep our school community as healthy as possible by following these recommendations if your child is not feeling well. Consult your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s symptoms or if their symptoms persist. In addition, please reinforce proper hand hygiene technique and cough etiquette with your child.
If your child has any of these respiratory symptoms, please follow guidelines below:
COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV can have similar symptoms. Seek medical care as needed for testing and treatment. Symptoms may include but are not limited to chest discomfort, chills, cough, decrease in appetite, diarrhea, fatigue (tiredness), fever or feeling feverish, headache, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, vomiting, weakness, and wheezing.
Vision and hearing screenings
Hello parents/guardians,
I want to inform you that I will be performing vision and hearing screenings, along with, height and weight checks (1st and 4th grade only for those without a current physical) as mandated by the state of Massachusetts on your students starting the 2nd week of October and into the month of November. Please let me know if your child has had or has an appt scheduled with a specialist to be tested this school year. I will only send results of the screenings home if a referral to a specialist is needed. In this case, I will also attempt to call you with the information. If you have any objection to your child being screened at school please let me know in writing.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call.
Thank you,
Julie Senecal RN BSN M.Ed,

3rd Grade News
Hello All!
Third Graders have been in full swing with routines and learning! I would like to let you all know how PROUD and impressed I am with the kindness and perseverance that our students have been showing! Here’s some of what’s been happening in our classroom so far!
In EL, we have started Module -Overcoming Learning Challenges Near and Far. Students will be reading texts and going through the POW writing cycle to write about the texts. We have been busy working on Collaborative Writing Tasks-practicing Gist-what it is mostly about, Planning and then writing.
Students have been showing off many math strategies for 2 digit addition and subtraction equations, working collaboratively in groups and sharing their thinking.
We have been learning about life cycles of plants and animals in Science. For Social Studies we have been exploring different maps and will be learning about Indigenous People of the Northeast.
This week, we wrapped up our Second Step Bullying Lessons. Students learned and practiced Recognizing, Reporting and Refusing Bullying and what they can do to help when they are a Bystander.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
You can e-mail me anytime you have questions or concerns

News from Miss Eller
Hello, Hawlemont!
As of the time of me writing this blurb, our Hallway Readerpillar is 100 segments long! We will reveal how much longer it has gotten at our All School Meeting October 14th. Thank you to everyone who has already filled out a Readerpillar piece - we have plenty more if you need them! Nightly reading, for this challenge and beyond, is super beneficial. Here are 7 Benefits of Daily Reading. I'm including one of my favorite graphics on this topic: Just a few dedicated minutes each night gives students exposure to new concepts, cultures, vocabulary, and also helps build a nice foundation for higher skills, like inferencing. Both fiction and nonfiction are great for this.
If you need any decodable books students can read based on their current reading instruction, please reach out to me at eeller@mtrsd.org.
Happy Reading,
Miss Eller
4H Information
"Dear 4H Parents,
Some clubs are starting next week and we are missing some forms from you. In order for your child to start their chosen clubs we need to have completed forms and payment. If we do not have those your child will not be allowed to stay.
We also still have room in some of the clubs, if your child still would like to join a club we have space in the following: Animal Science, Amazing Planet, Pins & Needles (5th-6th only).
You can still pick up blank forms from the Front Office.
Thank you,
Liz Billings & Sheila Litchfield"
