What is Global Read Aloud?

The purpose of the Global Read Aloud is simple:

To make the world a little smaller through a shared piece of literature, to open our eyes to the rest of the world and look at all of our shared experiences. How phenomenal for a child to know that the same book they are reading is being read in classrooms across the globe.

How to be involved...

  • Read aloud one of the books (or one book per week for the picture book study) during scheduled six weeks starting October 4.
  • Make as many global connections as possible. Reach out -- connect with other classes, Tweet (#GRA21), Skype, email, KidBlog, whatever you can come up with that gets your kids connecting with others and talking about the book(s).
  • Find Global partners and resources on GRA Facebook Groups

Middle School: The Barren Grounds by David A Robertson

Narnia meets traditional Indigenous stories of the sky and constellations in an epic middle grade fantasy series from award-winning author David Robertson.

Morgan and Eli, two Indigenous children forced away from their families and communities, are brought together in a foster home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They each feel disconnected, from their culture and each other, and struggle to fit in at school and at their new home — until they find a secret place, walled off in an unfinished attic bedroom. A portal opens to another reality, Askí, bringing them onto frozen, barren grounds, where they meet Ochek (Fisher). The only hunter supporting his starving community, Misewa, Ochek welcomes the human children, teaching them traditional ways to survive. But as the need for food becomes desperate, they embark on a dangerous mission. Accompanied by Arik, a sassy Squirrel they catch stealing from the trapline, they try to save Misewa before the icy grip of winter freezes everything — including them.

High School Title: Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger

Elatsoe—Ellie for short—lives in an alternate contemporary America shaped by the ancestral magics and knowledge of its Indigenous and immigrant groups. She can raise the spirits of dead animals—most importantly, her ghost dog Kirby. When her beloved cousin dies, all signs point to a car crash, but his ghost tells her otherwise: He was murdered.

Who killed him and how did he die? With the help of her family, her best friend Jay, and the memory great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother, Elatsoe, must track down the killer and unravel the mystery of this creepy town and its dark past. But will the nefarious townsfolk and a mysterious Doctor stop her before she gets started?

A breathtaking debut novel featuring an asexual, Apache teen protagonist, Elatsoe combines mystery, horror, noir, ancestral knowledge, haunting illustrations, fantasy elements, and is one of the most-talked about debuts of the year.

STEP ONE: SIGN UP

So that Pernille can gather data on the participants in the project, please sign up at this link.

The dates: October 4th and end November 12th. Don’t worry about getting behind, just don’t get ahead. (And if you do - just don't spoil things for others...)

STEP TWO: Make a connection

Using any form of social media, technology, or even good old fashioned paper/pen, find a way to share your thoughts on the book with others. In the spirit of the project, the connections are often the most meaningful when made from a distance.

See below for ideas of how to connect via Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Edmodo.

Pernille has put together a list of tech tools and how others have used them.

And a list of FAQs.

You can even buy a shirt.

STEP THREE: Read the book with your class

Officially the read aloud starts October 1, but with as busy as classrooms are, it's okay to start earlier. Just make sure that if you are connecting with another class, and you get a bit ahead in your reading, you don't share any spoilers!

STEP FOUR: Connect to make the world smaller

The true beauty of the GRA is the connection with readers across the globe who have read the same story. Tweet, Skype, pen pal letters, Kidblog posts... use your imagination (and any tech or non-tech skills in your toolbox to share and discuss with others who read the same title(s).
