Principal's Message
Dear Big T Families,
Halloween Fun and Learning!
What a great week it’s been at Big T! Our classroom Halloween activities were filled with creativity, community, and fun — with a special academic twist! Interestingly, there was a food related theme with many costumes this year. Thank you to our teachers and families for helping make the day both festive and focused on learning.
74th Annual Chili Supper & Silent Auction – Coming Up Soon!
Our 74th Annual Big T Chili Supper and Silent Auction is coming up fast — Saturday, November 8th! This beloved Big T tradition is our PTA’s only fundraiser of the year and a wonderful evening for our families and community to come together. Please consider attending or volunteering to help make this long-standing event a success. Many hands make light work, and every bit of support helps!
All-School Field Trip to the Denver Zoo – Friday, November 14th
We’re thrilled to share that our entire school will be visiting the Denver Zoo for a day of exploration and learning focused on conservation!
Overview from the Denver Zoo:
Learning Stations: Available throughout the zoo from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Students and chaperones will have the freedom to explore at their own pace — deciding when, where, and how long to engage at each station. The experience is designed for discovery, so station locations may vary daily!
Activities: Students can observe animals in their habitats, use tools like binoculars and ID apps, and join in group tracking projects. They’ll take part in hands-on conservation actions such as building animal homes, creating seed balls for habitat restoration, and designing wildlife-friendly spaces. Some stations even allow students to connect with live animals to better understand their needs and ways we can protect them.
Lunch & Return: We’ll enjoy lunch before heading back to Big T, arriving by 2:30 PM.
Student Learning: After the trip, students will use their new learning to explore how they can make their school or home communities better places for people and wildlife.
Important Details:
Cost: This opportunity is free for all students.
What to Bring: Students should dress in layers and bring a backpack they can carry throughout the day.
Permission Slips & Lunch Orders: Watch for permission slips and lunch order forms coming home in Friday folders. Please complete and return them as soon as possible.
Chaperones: Classroom teachers will contact families about chaperone opportunities. Spots are limited and you must be a registered district volunteer. Chaperone admission is covered by the school. Chaperones will supervise a small group of students and must ride the bus.
Families who are not official chaperones are welcome to meet us at the zoo but must purchase their own admission tickets and coordinate with their child’s classroom teacher in advance.
We are so excited for this rich learning experience that connects directly to our Big T mission to Think Big, Act Big, and Do Big—as we inspire curiosity, responsibility, and care for the world around us.

With gratitude,
Sarah Walgast

Dear families,
Get ready—the Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! This is a great opportunity to build your child’s home library with new books they’ll dive into again and again.
The easiest way to let your child shop the Fair independently is by creating an eWallet. It’s easy to set up and easy for others to add funds. Cash and cards are also accepted.
Create an eWallet, and you’ll also have the opportunity to contribute to Share the Fair - the giving program that supports students at our school who need help buying books. Consider participating so that no child leaves the Fair empty-handed!
Here’s everything else you need to know about the Book Fair:
Dates: November 3rd - November 8th
Location: Big T’s Library
Times: 3:00pm - 4:00pm & during library classes
The book fair will also be open during the Chili Supper!
For full details, and to create an eWallet, visit our school’s Book Fair homepage:
https://www.scholastic.com/bf/bigthompsonelementaryschool
More than ever, we need to get students reading. Studies prove* that children with more books at home have higher-level reading skills, and attain more years of education overall.
Lastly, this is a great opportunity to be a Book Fair volunteer! When you give your time, it helps make our Fair an unforgettable reading experience where every purchase benefits our school directly.
Happy reading,
Miss Izzy

Messages From The Office
* When your student is absent it is a good idea to reach out to their teacher to get work to do at home. However, still call the attendance line or email the office to excuse the absence. Teachers are busy and may not have time to let the office know that the absence was excused through them.
You can now excuse the absence through the parent portal if that is more convenient for you.
* If your student is absent due to an appointment, please get a medical note from the clinic and send it to the front office.
* Remember, if you need to change how your student normally goes home please call or email the office before 2:30 PM. Stacey.faykosh@tsd.org or 970-613-5600
* Please remember that toys are to remain at home. They can be a distraction in the classroom and there are tears if the toy disappears.
**Small lost and found items are usually kept at the office.
