Happy New Year Math Friends!
We hope that this message finds you rested and rejuvenated for the second semester of the school year! We have a year full of exciting opportunities for Arizona Educators. If you are planner, make sure to read through the entire newsletter, as there are so many opportunities to engage with your amazing AZ mathematics community! As I have shared before, it is so important to expand your network and continually learn from those around you.
As you are part of our community, I wanted to share our team working agreements with you. If you have attended any of our PD sessions, these will be familiar to you...
Working Agreements
Everyone is MATH person!
Cognitive dissonance may occur and that is ok.
ALL teachers and students can participate in mathematics at high levels.
"I do, We do, You do" does NOT create mathematically proficient students.
Being fast at math ≠ being good at math
I share these at the start of the new year as a reminder of our beliefs and how we approach our work in supporting Arizona teachers and leaders. What are your beliefs? What working agreements will you set for yourself as you engage with your colleagues, students, and your community? How will they guide you as you make decisions about the teaching and learning of mathematics?
Know that we are here to support you in your role, in any way that we can. There will be several opportunities to engage with the AZ math community this year. We hope to see you soon!
Cheers to the New Year!
Eboney

American Institute of Research
The American Institutes for Research is conducting a study of the Simulated Instruction in Mathematics Professional Development (SIM PD) program. This innovative professional learning opportunity for 4th and 5th grade math teachers leverages a simulated classroom, where teachers work in small groups with the support of a coach to practice math questioning and discussion strategies. What makes this program especially unique is that teachers have the opportunity to collaborate and try out instructional approaches with avatar students prior to implementing these strategies with their own students. The AIR team is currently seeking districts to participate in SIM PD during the 2024-25 school year.
NBA Math Hoops
Check out this FREE learning platform for the '23-'24 school year.
For the ‘23-’24 school year, we are excited to announce our upcoming season of NBA Math Hoops! NBA Math Hoops leverages the game of basketball and the NBA/WNBA brands to build fundamental math and social-emotional skills through a physical and digital basketball-themed board game, a curriculum, and a community program experience. Designed for students in grades 4-8, this free program develops students’ algebra readiness prior to entering high school, while strengthening important skills including self-regulation and executive function. The NBA Math Hoops program is implemented in in-school, out-of-school, and home learning environments.
Through programs like NBA Math Hoops, Learn Fresh is dedicated to achieving equitable representation in STEM fields among girls, students of color and those living in low-income communities.
*Interested in bringing NBA Math Hoops to your classroom? We have virtual trainings open to all educators listed at www.nbamathhoops.com/training.

Econiful
Are you looking for professional development to empower economic thinkers?
Econiful's mission is to strengthen economic education at the secondary level so that all students are able to apply economic principles in their personal, professional, and civic lives.
Econiful traces its roots back to 1972 when Thomas R. Brown, CEO of Burr-Brown Corporation, met University of Arizona economist Gerald Swanson. Their friendship and shared appreciation for the power of economic principles led to the creation of the Thomas R. Brown Foundation (TRBF) “to advance the use of economic principles in public and private decision making through strategic partnerships and educational programs.” From 2005 to 2022, TRBF funded over 700 professional development workshops for K-12 educators, mostly in Southern Arizona.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, TRBF began offering virtual and on-demand workshops to an increasingly geographically diverse audience of educators. In the latter half of 2022, TRBF adopted the trade name Econiful for its efforts to support middle and high school teachers around the country with professional development programs and, eventually, a full economics curriculum.
