We’d like to hear from you - and will include answers to submitted questions and focus on topics you’d like to know more about in upcoming Financial Fast Facts videos. Start With Hello Week!
In every school and in every community, there are young people who suffer silently
because they feel left out, alone or invisible. Social isolation is a growing epidemic in the
United States and within our schools.
Start With Hello teaches students to recognize students who are feeling left out, alone, or invisible. In doing so, our students are able to help these students feel more included and involved in school. The first step to making a new friend is to Start With Hello.
Mr. Biehl, our school counselor, will be going into each classroom during the month of September to further educate students on the importance of inclusion and empathy in our school and community.
Update Student Annual Forms - Now Past Due!
Annual information updates, including emergency forms, are available on PowerSchool. Please log into your parent account and complete the update ASAP as the deadline is now past due. All students must have a completed information online update.

Chapman Participation in the SCS Homecoming Parade
We’re thrilled to announce that Chapman Elementary will once again be participating in the Strongsville City Schools Homecoming Parade on Thursday, September 18th at 6:30 PM!
This year’s theme?
Chapman Takes NYC!
Think bright lights, big city, and a whole lot of school spirit!
Our float will be bursting with NYC vibes, but we need the help of our amazing Chapman students and families to bring the energy!
We’re looking for two students from each homeroom to walk in the parade. To ensure safety and supervision, a parent or guardian must accompany each student during the event.
Parade Details:
- Arrival Time: 6:00 PM at the float
- Duration: Approximately 2 hours
- Attire: Dress in NYC-themed spirit wear (more details to come!)
If your child is interested in participating, please sign up via the Sign Up Genius link below. Additional communication will be sent to all parade participants in the coming weeks.
Not walking in the parade? You can still help!
We’re accepting candy donations to hand out during the parade. All donations can be dropped off in the main office by September 15th. Individually wrapped candy only, please!
If you have additional questions please reach out to Karan Farhat-Rohfeld - karanfarhat@me.com or Katie Mossbruger – kmossbruger@gmail.com.
Candy Donations Needed!

Attention Families of 3rd-5th Grade Students: Chromebooks
Please remind your student to fully charge their Chromebook before coming to school on Monday. A charged device helps them start the day ready for learning and minimizes classroom disruptions. Thank you for your support in keeping our students prepared!
A Note About Grades for Music, Art and PE in Elementary
When looking at grades for these courses, please know that they are standards-based and NOT traditional percentages/letter grades.
M= Standard Met
P= Progressing to Standard
N= Standard Not Yet Met
In order for PowerSchool to show each student’s performance as a standards- based grade, we enter grades as a percentage, which is then converted into an M, P or N.. Each grade level and department has standards that students are working toward and this is what is being evaluated. Although you may see a percentage, please ignore the percentage and look at the progression toward the STANDARD (M, P, N). Grades/ percentages are not utilized in the sense that a traditional grading system uses them. You will see somewhere between a 50% and a 100%, but again, focus on the M, N, or P, as that is the official mark; the percentage is just a placeholder.

Student Cell Phone & Smart Watch Policy
In order to avoid disruption of the educational environment and protect students' right of privacy, student use of cell phones are prohibited, in school classrooms and on field trips, excluding use as approved by the classroom teacher or the Principal. Cell phones may be prohibited in any other areas within the school building as deemed necessary by the Principal. Possession of a cell phone by a student at school during school hours is a privilege that may be forfeited by any student who fails to abide by the terms of this policy, or otherwise abuses this privilege. Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary action and/or confiscation of the cell phone. The Principal will also refer the matter to law enforcement or child services if the violation involves an illegal activity (e.g., child pornography, sexting).
In practice, here is what this will mean for our students.
- PreK-5: Cell phones and airpods / earbuds are not permitted during any time of the school day. Students that have these devices should keep them stowed in their book bag and locker (if applicable).
Smartwatches & Other Devices
Although there is not a global policy on Smartwatches at this time, we recognize that more and more students are wearing smartwatches that have the same functionality as cell phones (i.e. text message, apps, etc.) Currently, students are permitted to wear them, but while they are at school they need to be used as a watch and not a cell phone for the reasons listed above. Therefore, we will follow these guidelines for devices in the classroom:
It is recommended that you have your child place any smartwatch or device into Airplane or School mode while at school. This decreases the functionality and limits what is possible on the watch while at school.
If, for any reason, a staff member believes that your child is using their watch for reasons that align with the cell phone policy or their watch is becoming a distraction in the classroom to their learning, they will be asked to remove the watch and place it in their backpack.
If a cell phone, smartwatch, or other device needs to be addressed for any reason we will utilize this protocol:
1. First Offense - The staff member will ask your child to place the device in their backpack or a safe location. If they don't feel that their backpack or locker is safe, they can turn it into the teacher.
2. Second Offense - The staff member will ask that the device be turned into them, they will store it safely, and return it to your child at the end of class. You will receive communication from the staff member.
3. Third Offense - The staff member will ask the device be turned in, they will give it to the administrative team, who will address the issue with the student, including a phone call to parents, and return the device to the student at the end of the school day.
4. Any Additional Offense - We will follow the same protocol as above and require the parent/guardian pick up the device in order to hold a meeting.
It is important to note that you can always call our building to get immediate support if necessary.
