Superintendent's Corner
Welcome Back! It's Time for the 2026-2027 School Year!
Welcome Back!
Greetings to the Wonderful NRESC Family!
I am excited to welcome everyone back for another school year—my 23rd in education and 7th as NRESC Superintendent! As we enjoy the final weeks of summer, it is once again time to think about returning to our schools/programs and making a difference throughout the region. The Commission is ready to continue its work as the premier organization for offering exceptional solutions for specific educational challenges.
Educationally Yours,
Dr. Nicholas V. Vancheri
Superintendent of Schools
Save the Dates!
NRESC New Staff Orientation (Wednesday, August 26, 2026)
For new, certificated staff (as well as non-certificated staff working in NRESC schools, programs, and offices), your journey begins on Wednesday, August 26, with the new staff orientation. This orientation for newly hired staff, as well as individuals who joined the NRESC after the 2026 convocation, will take place from 9:00am-12:00pm at our central office. A light, continental breakfast will be provided. And we are excited to take a narrated bus tour to all of our locations!
NRESC Staff Convocation (Tuesday, September 1, 2026)
For our entire staff, our journey begins with our IN-PERSON CONVOCATION on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Second Home Day Habilitation Center (515 Union Boulevard, Totowa, New Jersey).
- The convocation will take place from 8:15 am-12:00pm, with a continental breakfast being provided in the morning. A complimentary lunch will also be provided at the end of the day.
- Our expectation is that every NRESC employee attends this mandatory orientation session unless you are a staff member with significant responsibilities in a partner district AND have cleared this with your immediate NRESC supervisor.
- DRESS CODE: This is NOT a dress down day. This is Day 1 of 180 so the expectation is regular work attire-- no jeans, no hats, no sandals.
- The NRESC Education Foundation will announce the winners of its first annual mini-grants, with checks provided as well!
All staff (and students) will report as directed to their Commission program or partner school/district starting on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The NRESC Education Foundation Continues to Work for YOU!

NRESC Mission 150 Challenge – One Employee. One Sponsor. One Incredible Impact
Our new Mission 150 Challenge, an exciting initiative to support the NRESC Education Foundation and expand opportunities for the students, families, and programs we serve.
The goal is simple: 150 employees securing 150 Hole Sponsors for our 2027 NRESC Education Foundation Golf Outing. If each of us identifies just one local business, contractor, restaurant, community partner, family member, or friend willing to become a Hole Sponsor, together we can raise more than $20,000 to invest back into our organization.
The official challenge will run from September 1 through November 1, with additional details shared at our September Convocation. However, there's no reason to wait! Summer is the perfect time to begin reaching out to potential sponsors, and any sponsorships secured before the challenge begins will count toward the competition.
Thank you for your continued support of the NRESC Education Foundation. Together, we can make a tremendous impact—one sponsor, one employee, one incredible mission at a time!
Leadership Changes in Human Resources
Welcome Gleny Gaines and Goodbye Marta Ortiz!
Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Gleny Gaines, who joined the NRESC as our new Human Resources Officer on August 3!
Gleny is a highly accomplished, results-oriented Human Resources professional who brings a wealth of public education experience to NRESC. She has spent over a decade with Paterson Public Schools, serving most recently as their Tuition Reimbursement Coordinator and previously in Human Resources & Employee Services.
To ensure a seamless transition, Gleny will spend the entire month of August shadowing our outstanding, retiring Human Resources Officer, Marta Ortiz. Marta will be officially entering her well-deserved retirement on September 1. We are incredibly grateful to Marta for her years of dedicated service and are thrilled that she and Gleny will have this time to collaborate for a smooth handoff.
The Work at the NRESC Does Not Stop in the Summer!!
The NRESC Rocked Summer School!
This summer was a resounding success across our Clifton, Harrison, and Global Campus locations! Through dedicated teamwork, creative instruction, and targeted support, our programs empowered students to unlock their potential, bridge academic gaps, and discover new passions.
Second Home Potato Harvest!
At Second Home, July was time to harvest potatoes! Participants saw the whole process through by picking, cleaning, cooking and making potatoes into fun "volcanos". This was a great activity that practiced community involvement, sustainability, conversation, and patience.
Camp for Pearl in Totowa!
The NRESC Welcomes its Newest Superintendents/Board Members!
Statewide ESC Retreat at PCTVS
On July 23, the NRESC was honored to host our annual statewide Educational Services Commission Summer Retreat, welcoming colleagues from the Educational Services Commissions of Sussex, Union, Hunterdon, and Somerset counties for a full day of collaboration and professional learning.
Our agenda was packed with meaningful discussions, beginning with an outstanding session from communications expert Lori Perlow on marketing and branding, followed by job-alike networking sessions where professionals shared ideas and best practices. During the afternoon, we were also pleased to welcome business office personnel from numerous Passaic County school districts for an informative session focused on strategies to help districts address rising health benefits costs and identify opportunities for meaningful savings.
A sincere thank you to Passaic County Technical-Vocational Schools (PCTVS) for graciously hosting us in the beautiful Diana C. Lobosco STEM Building and for the exceptional food and hospitality. We also extend our appreciation to Millennium Strategies for participating with an exhibitor table and to Balken Risk Management for generously sponsoring breakfast and lunch.
It was a fantastic day of collaboration, innovation, and partnership, demonstrating how Educational Services Commissions and school districts can work together to share ideas, build stronger relationships, and better serve students across New Jersey.

Ramapo Avenue Learning Center with a New Look!
While we were disappointed that we couldn't host our Pompton Lakes summer camp at the Ramapo Avenue Learning Center this year, it was all for a great reason—we completely upgraded the building with brand-new carpeting throughout!
Though we missed having the summer camp energy in the building, this necessary facelift has transformed the facility into a fresher, cozier, and more vibrant space for learning. We can’t wait to welcome both returning and new faces through our doors this September to experience the fresh new look!
Adult Special Services Continue to Shine!
At Second Home, our commitment to delivering exceptional, compassionate services to our adult participants remains the core of everything we do. Every day, our team creates an engaging, supportive environment where individuals build skills, foster meaningful friendships, and thrive.
As we look toward the future, we are driven to take our next big step: opening a dedicated Day Habilitation Center in the City of Paterson. This new venture will expand essential opportunities for community integration, life skills development, and personalized support tailored to the unique needs of Paterson residents.
However, securing the funding required to turn this vision into a reality has not been an easy road. Securing facility space, specialized equipment, and operational funding presents continuous challenges. Our team is undeterred. We are remaining steadfast and persistent in pursuing all available public and private funding streams. We know how vital a dedicated Day Habilitation Center is for the individuals and families of Paterson, and we will continue advocating and working tirelessly until our doors are open to serve them.
The Great Work at the Phoenix Center Continues!
Welcome Jersey City Non-Public Schools to the NRESC Family!
After stepping in this past January to provide targeted support—specifically in special education evaluations and speech therapy—we are significantly expanding our reach for the 2026–2027 school year. In addition to continuing our core Chapter 192/193 programs, NRESC will now offer comprehensive Non-Public Nursing, Security Services, and Technology Services.
We look forward to building on this momentum to ensure every student and school community receives the high-quality, dedicated support they deserve.

Get Ready to Shop!!
New Spirit Wear Site Under Construction!
Get ready to refresh your wardrobe—a brand-new NRESC spiritwear store is right around the corner!
We’ve officially partnered with a local vendor to bring you fresh designs and quality gear, and we’ll be revealing all the details live at Convocation this September.
You spoke, and we listened! We’ve worked hard behind the scenes to rectify previous sizing and placement issues, ensuring our new logo looks sharp, crisp, and clean across all printed and embroidered items.
Here’s the catch: unlike past years when the store stayed open year-round, our new spiritwear site will launch exclusively on a quarterly basis. Each shop window will only stay open for a limited time, so when a drop goes live, you’ll need to grab your NRESC swag before the shop closes until the next season!
Keep an eye out at Convocation—you won't want to miss our first drop!
