Monster Mash Bash - Planning Committee
The Monster Mash Bash planning committee is brewing up an enchanting evening! 🎃🔮✨
Every year, we look for new ways to make the Monster Mash Bash more frighteningly fun for every student. Bring your fresh ideas to the planning committee! Sign up here and choose between helping with decor, games, crafts, concessions or Spooky Hall.
Meetings - encouraged, but not mandatory - begin Monday, Sept. 28, and occur weekly (via Google Meets) to align efforts, answer questions, and address any other needs as they pop up. The event itself is on Thursday, October 29, from 6 - 7:30 p.m., and separate links will be sent out shortly for same-day event support.
This is truly one of the most fun events of the year, and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers! Feel free to email event chair, Kiana Doyle, at vicepresident@shpto.org with any questions or interest.
🍿 We Need Your Help with Concessions! 🍭
Our concessions are an important part of our SHPTO sponsored school family events (Family Movie Night, Monster Mash, Family Dance, & Bingo Night) —but we need more community volunteers to keep them running!
In the past, we have not had enough volunteers to reliably staff concessions at events. We know that volunteering can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve never worked concessions before, so we want to find ways to make it easy, approachable, and manageable for everyone.
👉 Please help us understand any barriers by taking a few minutes to complete our short anonymous survey and tell us what would make volunteering for concessions easier for you. We’d love to hear what questions or concerns you may have, what type of volunteer shifts would work best, and what would make you more comfortable helping at concessions.
Prefer to share your thoughts directly? Email our Vice Presidents, Dawn and Kiana at vicepresident@shpto.org —we’d love to hear from you!
Every volunteer makes a difference, and we truly need our community’s help to keep concessions available at future SHPTO school events. Thank you for your time and input!
If you would like to volunteer for our upcoming events, please sign up on ParentSquare as they become available.
📖 Fall Book Fair 📚
📚Our Fall Book Fair is coming October 12-15th offering a wide selection of books for all ages. It’s a great way to encourage reading at home and support our school at the same time. Students will have the chance to browse and shop at the Book Fair during their library time. It will also be open for shopping after school for families and during teacher conferences.
We strongly encourage families to create an e-wallet with Scholastic to eliminate the need for students to bring cash to school.
Set up an E-Wallet starting September 22: Set Up Here
Family Shopping hours:
Monday, October 12: 3:15pm - 4pm
Tuesday, October 13: 3:15pm - 4pm
Wednesday, October 14: 3:15pm - 7pm
Thursday, October 15: 9am - 7pm
You can also shop online during 10/12-10/25: Book Fair Online
To volunteer for this event, please sign up for a shift in ParentSquare when available later this month. We need volunteer support to help run the cash registers and assist students in selecting books. Volunteers need to be comfortable counting cash and working the register.

👣 Walking School Bus 👣
👟 Join the Walking School Bus! It’s a supervised group of students who walk to school together from a set meeting spot. Choose between two different routes that meet weekly on either Wednesdays or Fridays. Along the way, kids make new friends 🤝, earn fun prizes 🎉, and get to know their neighborhood 🏡. Walking together makes the trip to school safer, easier, and way more fun.
Parents can join the walk, or simply drop students off with our Walking School Bus volunteer—making this a convenient option for busy families.
Route 1:
📍 Meeting Spot: Thrush Lane & 158th Terrace
⏱️ Meeting Day/Time: Wednesdays @ 8:00 am
👟 0.5 miles = about a 14 min walk to school
Route 2:
📍 Meeting Spot: Barrows Rd & 175th Terrace
⏱️ Meeting Day/Time: Fridays @ 8:00 am
👟 0.6 miles = about a 15 min walk to school
Please reach out to our Walking School Bus Chair, Nick Barrett at walkingschoolbus@shpto.org, if you are interested in joining the email mailing list to stay up to date on the event and walking days (plus weather cancellations).
🚀 Student Enrichment Programs 🚀
Passport Club kicks off on September 28th!
🌎Passport Club is a fun, parent-run geography program for Scholls Heights students — optional for grades 2–4 and required for 5th grade. Students can choose from five levels and move at their own pace.
Each month, a study map will be sent home with a new set of locations to learn. On Passport Check Day at school, students earn stamps in their passport for the places they can identify — the more they know, the more they earn!
What students learn:
Grades 2–3: World geography — master Level 5 all year and your student will know every country in the world!
Grade 4: Oregon, U.S., and Canadian geography — rivers, mountains, cities, states, and more!
Grade 5: World geography — score Level 5 all year to learn every country and earn a National Geographic Atlas if they pass Level 5 six or more times!
A map was sent home earlier this month for participating grades. Can’t find it? More maps are always available by the Passport bulletin board at the top of the stairs near the elevator.
Students do best when they have a study partner at home (a parent, grandparent, friend, sibling, anyone!). They can choose how many levels to study, although we recommend everyone try at least level one to kick off the year. Students will earn stamps in their passport for the places they can identify… the more they know, the more they earn!
🏆ATTENTION Fifth graders: Score Level 5 six or more times this year to earn your own National Geographic Atlas! 📕
Interested in helping on Passport Check Days? Sign-ups are available on ParentSquare! We are in need of several more volunteers for our first testing date on 9/28.
🎨Volunteer for Art Lit - many classrooms are still in need of volunteers!
Art Literacy is a district-wide, volunteer-staffed art program that introduces students to six artists throughout the school year and allows them to create artwork mimicking those artists. Art Lit is easy and fun - All lessons, powerpoints, instructions, and materials are provided for you! Ideally, each classroom will have 2 or more year-long volunteers who can share responsibilities.
To volunteer to teach Art Literacy in your child's class this year, fill out the Art Literacy 26/27 Sign-Up Form. Sign-up is available on ParentSquare: Art Literacy. Training for our first unit will be held on September 29th at 9am in the school cafeteria and at 7pm via Zoom.
Questions, or interested in volunteering? Contact Andrea and Nicole at artlit@shpto.org. Or, for more information, visit www.shpto.org/art-literacy

September Grant Highlights
We are thrilled to share that thanks to your active support of the PTO, four new grant requests were officially approved at our recent community meeting!
Our PE department is gearing up for the school year with a comprehensive $6,735 PE Grant. Purchases include a complete indoor bowling setup, brand-new dodgeball packs, hacky sacks, poly spot arrows and a modern scoreboard timer and Bluetooth speaker system. Beyond the games, this funding also covers essential facility and organizational upgrades, including rolling computer stands, specialized storage carts and new directional trash cans to keep the equipment secure and the spaces running smoothly.
In our Independent Skills Center, a $390 ISC Storage Grant will make a meaningful, immediate difference in our students' daily routines. By adding custom student cubbies and shelving units to both the Lower and Upper ISC areas, this project creates neat, accessible spaces for personal belongings.
We are proud to invest $667 in the W.I.N. program ("What I Need"). This grant equips our teachers with color-coded student folders and progress-monitoring tools to closely track Oral Reading Fluency in real time. It also funds durable At-Home Reading Book Pouches, ensuring that leveled practice passages can travel safely between the classroom and home.
In addition to supporting our students' directly, we are also making an investment in our educators through a $3,640 Staff Seating Grant to provide 28 new ergonomic chairs. Taking care of our teachers ensures they can focus comfortably on doing what they do best, making this a lasting investment in our school building for years to come.
Thank you to our incredible parents, staff, and community members whose time and contributions make funding these transformative projects possible!
