Attendance
Attendance Reminders
- Religious Holidays: Students may be excused for religious holidays recognized by bona fide religious groups (22 PA Code 11.21). Parents must submit an Educational Trip Form through the Sapphire Community Web Portal at least one week in advance of the absence. Please note that this applies only to the observance of the holiday—not to travel time.
- Medical Appointments: If a student misses any part of the school day for a medical appointment, families must submit a Digital Excuse Card in Sapphire within 3 days and include a physician’s note on official letterhead signed by the attending doctor. Notes must confirm the student was seen, unable to attend school, and include the date the student can return. Without proper documentation, the time missed will be considered unexcused.
- Partial-Day Absences: Per the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), students arriving more than 90 minutes late or leaving more than 90 minutes early will be marked as having a half-day absence.
Please reach out to our attendance secretary, Mrs. Sarah Thompson, with any questions. thompsos@sgasd.org or 717-225-4731 x 1561

Fitness & Wellness with Mrs. Bortner
Fitness Classes
Students have been practicing their throwing accuracy and working on their cooperative skills and teamwork.
Third and fourth grade Fitness classes have been focusing on improving their overhand throwing and catching skills in a variety of cooperative and competitive formats. We have been emphasizing teamwork and using correct throwing mechanics. First and second grade classes have also been practicing underhand throwing and rolls skills.
In December we will focus on ball handling skills and seasonal cooperative games at all grade levels. We will play some games like “Elf on the Shelf Tag”, “Spinner Wonderland Workout” and “Reindeer Driving School” to name a few!
Paradise Elementary will be holding the Kids Heart Challenge fundraising event this year in February 2026. We will kickoff our fundraiser in January when we return from Christmas break. The informational sheet about the Kids Heart Challenge will be sent home with instructions about how to register and participate. This event helps to raise money for the American Heart Association and the Physical Education department. Fundraising in NOT required and all students will participate in the Kids Heart Challenge stations in February, regardless of whether they did any fundraising or not.
Wellness Classes
Students are finishing their safety lessons in November and will soon begin their nutritional units in mid-December. The safety lessons in grades 1-2 include seasonal safety, weather safety, playground safety and personal safety (Good Touch/Bad Touch). Grade three students will learn basic first aid practices while fourth grade classes will learn to recognize home safety hazards. All grade levels also completed their career education lessons in November.
December lessons will focus on nutrition related content. Grades 1-2 will learn about the 5 Food Groups and identify foods that belong to each food group. They will also learn the importance of “coloring their plate” by selecting foods from the 5 food groups for each meal. The 3rd and 4th grade students will learn how to read and understand nutrition labels on food products and analyze the various nutrients in a variety of foods.
