Message from Principal Williams

Here we go! Just a few weeks left in our school year and we're going to make these the best! With the warmer weather, please remind your students to check for sweatshirts or jackets that they may have taken off as the day heated up. We have a lot of these in the lost and found!

We are happy to announce that Centennial's new principal has been chosen! Please join me in congratulating Kristen Noor who will be leading CES starting next year. She is a highly qualified administrator who has years of experience working with elementary students, teachers, and families. We are happy to have her taking the reins!

Volunteers are such a valued part of our school community! Thank you so much to those of you who step up and help out in so many ways! A particularly strong shout out to the PTO who help us accomplish so much at Centennial!

Please make sure to follow us on Facebook and check out the Centennial website (links above).

Sincerely,

Principal Williams

Confident Kids

Confident kids are more likely to motivate themselves, ask for help, learn from mistakes, and take on new challenges. Kids are also more likely to stand up for themselves when they are confident and secure in who they are.

Tips for Raising Confident Kids

  1. Model confidence yourself.

  2. Don't get upset about mistakes.

  3. Encourage your kids to try new things.

  4. Allow kids to fail.

  5. Praise perseverance.

  6. Teach kids to set goals.

  7. Celebrate effort versus outcome.

Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS)

For the last weeks of the school year Centennial students are focusing on kindness and community building. Buddy classrooms will be working together on a kindness project. Individual classrooms are also challenged to decorate their door with examples of kindness. Students will be recognized for their kind acts by having their names added to a “wall of kindness” display by the cafeteria. Being kind to each other is a great way for Centennial Blue Jays to finish out the school year!

Assessments

We will soon be starting our state and district testing in reading and math and we're excited to see the growth our students have made this year! As a reminder, grades three through five will participate in the Oregon Statewide Assessment System (OSAS) and all grades (Kinder through Fifth) will do our district reading and math assessments. Fifth grade students will also do the state science assessment.

Please note, if you would like your student to opt out of the OSAS, you will need to complete paperwork which can be found at this link on the district website.

Your support is very helpful in making sure our students are well rested and in a good mind set to complete these opportunities. Students should not feel anxious as we just expect them to do the best they can. Your child's teacher will share more details as we get closer to the actual test dates.

Student Phones

  • Students should not bring cell phones or other personal electronic devices to school
  • If you feel your child must have a device with them, it must be kept turned off and stored in their backpack through the school day.
  • Students may not have devices out during the day while in class or in other areas such as the playground and cafeteria.
  • Thank you so much for your help with this!

Health Updates

COVID-19 Update

If a student tests positive they need to stay out for five days from the start of symptoms or date tested, if they are asymptomatic.

Please make frequent handwashing, for 20 seconds, a normal part of your routine and keep your child home if they are experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, upset stomach, or headache. Students must be symptom free for 24 hours to return to school. Please click here to check the SPS website for additional information about vaccines and other resources.

Collaborative Problem Solving Parent Classes

We encourage our CES families to take advantage of this free parenting class! It is specifically designed to provide help for adults raising kids with challenging behaviors and will help you:

  • Build skills & confidence in using the CPS approach
  • Network & share information about community resources
  • Develop new understanding of challenging behavior & learn new ways to help your child
  • Rethink conventional approaches to behavioral difficulties and strengthen relationships
  • Gain support from other parents, grandparents, and foster parents

The Collaborative Problem Solving approach is an evidence-based method to managing challenging behavior that promotes the understanding that challenging kids lack the skill - not the will - to behave; specifically, skills related to problem-solving, flexibility and frustration tolerance. Unlike traditional models of discipline, the CPS approach avoids the use of power, control and motivational procedures and instead focuses on collaborating with the child/ youth/ young adult to solve the problems leading to challenging behavior and building the skills they need to succeed.

The 8-week class is provided in an online setting.
