Knowing When Students Are Learning
One of our primary areas of focus this year is ensuring that every student experiences highly effective instruction every day. An important part of effective teaching is knowing, throughout a lesson, whether students are actually learning what is being taught.
That is why one of our instructional focuses this month is Checks for Understanding. These are the many ways teachers pause during instruction to determine what students know, what they may be struggling with, and what needs to happen next. This might be a question posed to the entire class, a quick written response, students explaining their thinking to a partner, or a teacher circulating the room and looking closely at student work.
The important part is what happens with that information. When a teacher recognizes that students understand a concept, the lesson can move forward. When students are struggling, the teacher can slow down, explain something differently, provide additional practice, or offer more support.
Great teaching is responsive teaching. It isn't simply about delivering a lesson—it is about continually paying attention to how students are responding and adjusting instruction to meet their needs. That is one of the ways we make sure there are No Invisible Learners in BCISD.
Instruction Drives Construction
Although you may not see construction equipment on our campuses just yet, a great deal of work is already taking place behind the scenes on the projects approved by BCISD voters in May.
As we move through the design process, one principle is guiding our work: Instruction Drives Construction.
Before we decide exactly what classrooms and other learning spaces should look like, we first need to think about what we want teaching and learning to look like in BCISD—not just today, but for many years to come. Our facilities should support the work happening inside them, rather than the other way around.
As the design process moves forward, staff and students will have opportunities to provide input at different stages of the work. Their experiences and perspectives will help our architects and construction team better understand how our facilities can support instruction, collaboration, student engagement, safety, and the day-to-day needs of our schools.
We also want our staff, families, and community to be able to follow the progress of these projects along the way. A new BCISD Bond Projects website is currently being developed and will be available soon. The site will provide a central place to find project information, updates, timelines, and other important information as the work progresses. We are also designing project signs that will be installed at our campuses to help communicate what work is planned and provide another visible way for our community to follow the progress being made.
There is still a great deal of work ahead before construction begins, but this early work matters. The decisions we make during design will shape learning environments that will serve generations of Bulldogs. Just as importantly, we want our community to be able to see the progress and stay informed throughout the process.
Did You Know? Regular school attendance matters because learning builds from one day to the next. Missing just two days of school each month can add up to about 10% of the school year.
Did You Know? Struggling with something new isn't necessarily a sign that learning isn't happening. When students are appropriately challenged and receive support and feedback, productive struggle can be an important part of developing deeper understanding.
