Lowell Newsletter October 2024
We are proud of our pride of Lowell Lions!
From Principal Franzone
Dear Lowell Families,
The seasons are turning and things are well underway here at Lowell! Just last week, we were able to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at our assembly, where fifth graders shared about their culture. Classroom lessons and read-alouds will be additional ways we are celebrating our vibrant Hispanic community.
If you were not able to attend my last Collaborative Conversation, I want to invite you to join us later this month. On Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 PM, I’ll be in the Community Room at the Carbon Apartments (2418 Winnebago St). We will be discussing school data, school priorities, and working together. Childcare and Spanish translation will be provided. We will be reviewing and expanding on the same information that was presented at the September meeting, so everyone is welcome to join! As an FYI, there will be another Collaborative Conversation meeting on January 28th, and this meeting will be held virtually.
As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Warmly,
Ellen

Hello from the Lowell Health Office!
My name is Alicia Schanbacher, and I am the school nurse at Lowell!! I’m so excited to be here and to be able to care for your children this school year!!
A little background about me: I have been a Registered Nurse for 23 years, with experience working in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care. I have also worked in family practice, urgent care, and Allergy & Asthma specialty practice. I have been with MMSD since 2021.
Our health office is also staffed with the wonderful Deena Garcia, Nurse Assistant. This is Deena’s 17th year at Lowell, and we are so incredibly lucky to have her!! Deena will be covering the health office on days when I am not there, since I am at another school within MMSD. Your children are in wonderful and caring hands with Deena!
Please continue to read below for important health information for this school year.
Winter Coats, Gloves, and Mittens
Do you need help getting winter gear for your children or have winter gear to donate that your kids have outgrown?
Koats For Kids is accepting DONATIONS of new or gently used coats at several sites around Madison.
Distribution of coats will be on Friday, October 25, at several of the same sites around Madison. Please see the link below for more information.
Save cereal boxes for the Lions' Lab
We’re excited to announce an upcoming special project in the Lions’ Lab for our 4th graders! We need your help collecting empty cereal boxes to use in our upcoming activities. If you have any empty boxes at home, please save them and bring them to school. Students can drop off the boxes in the front office or in the library. Thank you for your support in making this project a success!
Speech and Language
Hello and welcome to the 2024/2025 school year. There are two Speech and Language Pathologists here at Lowell Elementary School, Vicki Ashenbrenner and Ranee Zaporski.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s speech and/or language development. Email is generally the quickest way during the school day. You can email us at vashenbrenne@madison.k12.wi.us and/or razaporski@madison.k12.wi.us. You can also reach us by phone/text at (608) 709-8921 (Google Voice). We are looking forward to a wonderful year!
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at Lowell
Staff at Lowell will provide social skills lessons in all 4K through fifth grade classrooms this year. Second Step is a research based social emotional learning curriculum that helps children think about, develop, and practice positive social skills. Research tells us that children who learn and use these skills are more likely to get along with others and do better in school.
The Second Step program is divided into four units:
Unit I: Skills for Learning. Children learn about how to focus their attention, ignore distractions, and follow directions.
Unit II: Empathy Training. Children learn about feelings and ways to show understanding and caring toward others.
Unit III: Emotion Management. Children learn and practice skills to calm down, handle frustration, anger, and disappointment.
Unit IV: Problem-Solving. Children will learn to share, join groups, and settle disagreements using their words.
We believe by working together students, parents, and school staff can create a safe, respectful, and caring school for all children.
Please contact Mindy Trudell, School Social Worker, at mtrudell@madison.k12.wi.us or Megan Martin, School Psychologist, at mamartin@madison.k12.wi.us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
Buddy Bench donated by a former Lowell student
You may have noticed the beautiful new rainbow Buddy Bench on the playground near the Art room door. The bench was designed and donated by former Lowell student Cecilia Rupiper. What is a Buddy Bench? It is a designated place on the playground for kids to go when they are looking for someone to play or talk with them. The American concept of a Buddy Bench and its spread across the U.S. came from a fifth grade student in Pennsylvania, Christian Bucks. It is now viewed as another way to encourage Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and discourage bullying.

Bus Information
Lowell bus routes can be found here.
To learn which bus stop your child will be picked up and dropped off at:
- Log in to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal
- Click "More" on the left sidebar
- Click "Transportation"
Get the FirstView transportation app!
FirstView provides location data via GPS tracking, and sends notification alerts when a student’s bus is getting close. It can be used to track all of the students in a household/associated with a caregiver account. It’s the easiest and fastest way to get answers to questions like, “When will the bus show up?” and “How can I see when my child will be picked up or dropped off?”
More information can be found here.
Visitor Sign-In Procedure
Beginning in 2024–25, we will be using Visitor Aware in main offices and welcome centers across the district, to screen anyone seeking access to our schools. The software is designed to streamline the way visitors access our buildings, doing away with the traditional pen-and-paper sign-in sheets in favor of a digital experience.
