WELCOME MRS. BAY

We have a new face in the IDC, Mrs. Diana Bay! Mrs. Henshaw took our open secretary position a couple weeks ago. Mrs. Bay is learning all about the Innovation and Discovery Assistant role. She has been an amazing asset to Ridgewood for several years as an intervention aid. While her friends miss her dearly there, she's not gone too far and still is able to support all of those students and more, similar to Mrs. Henshaw. We are lucky to have Mrs. Bay in the IDC and wish Mrs. Henshaw the very best!

Ridgewood Wellness Night

The IDC will have host some mindfulness activities for the Ridgewood Wellness Night on Thursday, March 7th. We will have the following curated resources available to explore together with your child.

Cardboard Make.do Challenge

5th grade students worked with BJ Thaman from the ESC to design cubes out of a single pieces of rectangular cardboard and the Make.do tools and screws! This task is harder than it looks, requires failure and reworking, mistakes and successes! Creation is a hard ask but quite rewarding!

Marcy Infusing Portrait of a Learner Competency: Empathy Marcy Infusing Portrait of a Learner Competency: Empathy

A Reflection by Mrs. Kibler A Reflection by Mrs. Kibler

Authentic & inspiring Marcy Campbell captivated staff & students K-5 for a full day of multiple personalized experiences focusing on the idea of empathy. Marcy was a perfect author to host at Ridgewood Elementary as her picture books directly support Hilliard City School's Portrait of a Learner initiative. "Empathetic Learners" is one of the 5 competencies that drive our district-wide work. Students engaged in questioning and writing that utilized empathetic thinking. Our day started with a mingle, show and tell with kindergarten writers which validated their hard work and growing love of writing. Each grade level enjoyed a personalized experience from volunteer demonstrations/props and various writing exercises. There is nothing better than watching and hearing an author read one of her own books! Marcy read, translated and shared the very first book she ever wrote in kindergarten as well as Something Good, which has been chosen as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection. To say "hosting Marcy was amazing" is an understatement... both students and staff were inspired by her presence, authentic share and thoughtful gifts. Each student at Ridgewood received a personally signed bookmark! Thank you to Marcy for sharing all of your wisdom about how writers grow!

Coming 2.15.24... Coming 2.15.24...

MARCY CAMPBELL is visiting Thursday 2.15.24! We are so excited to host this Ohio author. We have 2 of Marcy's books in our Portrait of a Learner: 5 Competency collection and her others are in the general IDC collection. Marcy will mingle & work with every grade level!

For books purchased through the Cover to Cover book pre-sale starting 1.29.24 through 2.12.24, Marcy will personalize a bookplate.*

RIDGEWOOD AUTHORS RIDGEWOOD AUTHORS

Love listening to Ridgewood authors when they come to the IDC. This story of Pokemon friendship which a strong story structure, detailed illustrations and one proud author! Students in Mrs. Dickmann's class kindergarten class are writing stories and love sharing them! Thank you for coming to the IDC to read to me!

The GREEN MACHINE

Ridgewood is now "greener" with our solar powered green machine. Read to find out more about the importance of green energy and the why behind this initiative. Third graders listened in the IDC to Jake Kuss who designed the green machine.

MARCH BOOK MADNESS is COMING! #mbm2024

The Ridgewood students helped with the reading of Hidden Gem by Linda Liu! March Book Madness is a competition style bracket of 16 picture books. All of the Innovation and Discovery Specialists read and record a book. At RGW, we engaged IDC visitors to make our read aloud. This is a sweet book with a special message, "...finding out that being special is being me!" Give this reread a listen...

CODING CUPS

2nd graders explored coding with non-digital tools. A question start used to spark interest "What is Coding?" We had lots of ? on our post-its. Vocabulary learned: developer, coder, algorithm, debugging, sequence. Students explored how computer science and coding will be an important skill to have for future careers. In groups of 3, they developed code to move a robot arm to successfully stack cups in a sequence. To start students learned a new language in 5 minutes! This language consisted of 5 arrows. They used two colored markers; one to write the code and one as their debugging tool. I asked students to be comfortable finding bugs in their code and then debugging the algorithm so the robot arm completes it's stacking task accurately. It was impressive to watch this group work so well together and take on a new challenge. See some of the fun below...

5th Graders Visit ROTO

ROTO EXPERIENCE!

Students in the fifth grade classes went on a field trip to ROTO! ROTO is a design firm that designes, fabricates, installs and brings to life interactive experiences for museums and attractions like COSI, the Columbus Zoo and the Smithsonian in Washington DC. The students explored the design process as ROTO shared how they designed a play structure for one of their clients. The students also were testers of some upcoming exhibits in museums and attractions around the United States. This experience allowed students to explore various careers, such as engineering, design, creativity & art, project, managing and more. Students also have the opportunity to ask the ROTOs various questions about their career and experiences. Every fifth grade at Ridgewood will be taking part in the ROTO experience this fall. We are so grateful for the opportunity, for our fifth graders to attend this field trip, and visit a one of a kind, design firm right here in neighboring Dublin, Ohio!

March is Digital Wellness Month...

Technology is all around us. Devices like smartphones, computers, and tablets have vastly improved the way we learn, solve problems, and work in our daily lives. In our increasingly technology-rich world, it is essential that students are equipped to lead a balanced and healthy digital lifestyle for success in school, at home, and in their future careers.

Over the next month, we will explore the four facets of digital wellness: Well Being, Citizenship, Etiquette, and Safety. Each week we will send out ideas to help build digital wellness in student's lives. This week, let's talk about ways to develop Digital Well Being in students.

~Updated Book Collections~

The IDC picture book section has a couple new collection groupings: STEM Mindsets; Beginning chapter books; Fractured Fairy Tales; Celebrating Cultures; Celebrating Diversity.

A recent boom in the creation of picture books that focus on storylines incorporating various cultural traditions; as well as, topics such as kindness, manners, bravery, the power of a name, etc. led us to grouping these books in one place in forward facing bins. Students enjoy browsing books in this way versus spine out. Teachers also encourage students to make connections such as text to self, text to text and text to world. Grouping the books makes it more efficient for all to grab books on these similar topics.

Fractured fairy tales are a play on traditional fairy tales. They are written by different authors and mixed in with all of the other picture books and harder to locate.

The beginning chapter books were spine out making it harder for our young readers to browse. We've placed these in forward facing bins as well to support an easier browsing experience.

STEM Mindsets are books by various authors that encourage exploration, creativity and thinking outside of the box.

Economics in 1st Grade

Students have been exploring the topic of economics the last month in the IDC learning new vocabulary like needs/wants, good/services, consumers/producers.

In our first lesson, they identified the goods the Mouse asks for in Give A Mouse A Cookie, learned about Community Helpers: A guessing game (service jobs), tasted two kinds of cookies and voted on their favorite one by organizing the votes on ten-frames.

Our second lesson was all about being a consumer and purchasing tools to design or produce a toy or piece of furniture. Our inspiration came from empathy we built around a girl named Violet in the book by Peter H. Reynolds called Our Table. All of our learning culminated in the 2nd Annual 1st Grade Holiday Shop in the IDC where students earned money to purchase goods their classmates produced to sell. All classes produced goods in bulk or provided services for other classes to purchase. Students earned money in the classroom to purchase the goods and services. This unit serves as an authentic way to explore, learn and practice being positive members in our Ridgewood community!

EMPOWER THROUGH BOOKS

The Innovation & Discovery Center (IDC) has been busy this first month of school! From iPad distribution to IDC orientations. It is such a joy to meet new friends and see familiar faces!

Our space is full of classics, new releases, favorites and treasures yet to be discovered. Kids in a candy shop with so many options and opportunities to fall in love with reading. This leads me to our philosophy regarding book selection. Readers choose books for many purposes. We believe in the power of choice!

Discovering and engaging the reader's identity is a lifelong journey. Reader's identity is "fancy" for understanding the kinds of books one likes to read. It is individual to all of us. The more a student understands their reader's identity the more they will be motivated to read. The more reading risks they take, the broader their reading pallet. Reading exposes children to many kinds of writing which improves their own writing skills. The opportunity to explore and deepen passions...priceless! Tomie dePaola said, "If you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything."

~ Mrs. Kibler // Innovation & Discovery Specialist

Empowering students to choose boosts confidence and most importantly validates his/her own reader's identity and purpose for book selection. Join me in providing the opportunity and time to choose!

"Our Table" 5th Grade Design Challenge

5th graders in Ms. Hall's class enjoyed Morning Meeting in the IDC on 12/16 where we discussed EMPATHY and related to being uncomfortable during uncertainty. This, along with Design Thinking, supported our work as designers in a table creating challenge. We empathized with a girl name Violet in the new picture book by Peter H. Reynolds titled Our Table. The students were inspired to design, ideate, prototype and test a table they created out of various materials. Some groups used iPads to design or paper and pencil. Communication, collaboration, laughing and problem solving led to 6 creative tables. Students will extend their learning by determining how much to sell each table by taking time and materials into consideration. Embedding economics and mental wellness into a fun design challenge makes learning meaningful and curricular. It was awesome to have a visit from our very own Superintendent Mr. David Stewart and elementary curriculum director Herb Higginbotham!

1st Grade Economics Unit

The 1st grade students at RGW learned, created and applied economics knowledge throughout the month of December in a 3 part series of lessons. We used a couple clips from the movie Home Alone to see a kid, just like our first graders, acting in his community as a consumer.

Part 1: Students learned about goods and services. We identified goods in the story If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Students chose one GOOD to illustrate and then used it to graph their favorite cookie organized by ten-frames, chocolate or white chocolate sprinkle. Students enjoyed the taste test the best! We read Whose Hands Are These- A Community Helpers book, and took part in a game to find a SERVICE match. Kevin, from Home Alone, visited the grocery story and traded money for GOODS he needed. The cashier provided a SERVICE by helping Kevin purchase the GOODS. She was a tad confused as to why a 9 year old was shopping alone.

1st Grade Economics Unit- part 2

Part 2- Students continue their economics unit learning about consumers and producers. We watched a short clip with our friend Kevin trying to purchase a quality toothbrush and the consequences of not trading money for his GOOD. Remember, Kevin accidentally stole the toothbrush when he was scared of the neighbor. The students engaged in a designed challenge that had them acting first as a consumer buying materials with 10 pennies to create a toy which they would then sell as a producer. CREATIVITY is not lacking with these PRODUCERS using Duplo blocks and wooden planks limited in number by the amount they could purchase with 10 pennies. Economics sure is fun!

1st Grade Economics Unit- Grand Finale!

Our economics lessons in the IDC led to a 1st grade store where the students EARNED dimes and pennies (1st grade coins) throughout the month of December, created handmade GOODS, designed SERVICES to perform and enjoyed a fun afternoon BUYing and SELLing to staff and other 1st graders. To say the students were excited to design GOODS in their classroom to sell to friends is an understatement. Everyone enjoyed this grand finale to their economics unit that had them applying all of the knowledge learned!

~THIRD GRADE FOLKLORE~ ~THIRD GRADE FOLKLORE~

Once upon a time...

...3rd graders at RGW explored the folklore genre: fables, folktales, tall tales, myths, legends and fairytales. Students browsed various piles of books identifying aspects to determine which part of folklore that pile represented. There is a specific section of the Dewey Decimal System in the IDC 398.2 where students can find more folklore. Each student chose a book to extend learning at home. Everyone lived happily ever after!

Mrs. Heeter's 2nd graders explored the new picture book Change Sings by Amanda Gorman & Loren Long. The author Amanda Gorman wrote this book because of how young children are the voices of identifying issues and are the makers of change. This 4 part exploration in the IDC started with reading and discussing the story. Students were asked to make a text to self connection by reflecting and identifying a time they acted on change: picked up trash, helped a sibling, donated money. Students took part in a Flipgrid live event with the author and illustrator. This opportunity was invaluable as we learned about why Amanda wrote this anthem, how Loren used the text as inspiration for illustrating the pictures and took a selfie with them both. Our culminating task had students create and share a Piccollage with their peers that illustrated the change they sing in their lives. This was an inspiring experience for both students and teachers! The Ridgewood IDC has 2 copies of the book Change Sings. Come down to borrow it today! See our selfie below...

Positive Partnerships

The Innovation and Discovery Center provides ample opportunities to explore, create, discover and learn. We are leveraging our Ridgewood partnerships by empowering 3rd and 4th graders to support Kindergarteners and 1st graders with exploring the IDC space. While open-ended discovery opportunities are abundant, some of our tools in the space require understanding such as our Gravitrax. It is helpful to engage and communicate with others while learning various science concepts such as gravity. Our how-to-draw table is very popular as students gather and share drawing ideas. Steve Harpster, a visiting illustrator from a few years back, has great tutorials on drawing monsters, dragons, video games and more. By using light, shapes and a little imagination, students are designing towers and castles on the light table. Our Lego wall looks very similar to a place we all love...Ridgewood Elementary School based on the Google Earth image. Students are exploring origami, puzzles, tee art and more! Our plants are thriving with a grow light and plenty of carbon dioxide from the many daily visitors to the space. Coming soon are new book choices and resources as we honor Indigenous People. Ask your child to share their favorite painted pumpkin or zone from the IDC!

Books...BOOks...BOOKS!

The Scholastic Book Fair was a HUGE success! Every student had the opportunity to start their long weekend with a new book. Teachers had $40 to spend for their classroom libraries. Watching as 4/5th students supported our younger readers with making wishlist book choices was refreshing and made our hearts full! THANK YOU Ridgewood families for supporting this fall's book fair. The excitement was overwhelming! Points earned were used to gift books to students and teachers. We also supplement the IDC with new books or update favorites!

We worked to get all the eWallet purchasers down to the fair. If your child has an amount remaining, typically under $2, they will have this available for the fair we will host in May.

You may continue to purchase online through 10/19. There is free shipping to your home for purchases over $25.

Thanks again & READERS MAKE LEADERS!

Grant Awarded to RGW IDC

Here in the IDC, our goal is to empower students to engage multiple literacies to push the boundaries of education. Mr. Buchman, our principal, wants to "...create a space where we can offer learning experiences that were previously impossible." We encourage students in the Innovation in Discovery Center (IDC), to identify their learning purpose, leverage passions and share the story of their learning journey AKA their "why". We are taking personalized education to the next level. In the IDC we build on what our amazing teachers are accomplishing daily with the fundamentals. Amazon's Big Think partnership and TangerKIDS Grants will propel our work to inspire students to be digital storytellers and confidently share their hearts. A huge blessing is being awarded a grant through TangerKIDS to purchase a Padcaster Recording Studio. Brianne Knight came on September 22nd at 11A to present the award to the Ridgewood students. Through student agency, our learners will begin to command and create how they want their learning journey to be written and will be encouraged to shout it out. We are excited to get comfortable with the uncomfortable, dig deep into new learning and with the students taking THE LEAD, the possibilities are endless. Promoting student agency is how we show kids that we trust and believe that "they can"!
