Nike Weekly Scout Report
November 20, 2025
MVRIII Closed for Thanksgiving Break November 24-28, 2025.
Good afternoon Nike families,
Boy, the month of November really flew by for students and staff here at Nike Elementary! We had a great month filled with learning, growth, and celebrating many successes.
Be sure to ask your students about the feathers they’ve been earning at Nike and adding to our Tom the Turkey bulletin board—it’s been a fun and festive way to highlight positive choices! 🦃💙
Don't forget, tomorrow — Friday, November 21, our annual Balloons Over Broadway Parade will begin at 2:45 p.m. Families are welcome to attend and enjoy the creativity of our students! Families can go straight to the Nike gym and stand the inside perimeter to watch the parade. If you would like to take your child home after the parade, please stop by the Nike office to sign them out.
Your child’s Thursday folder contains important information each week. Please check it regularly and respond to any notes or forms that come home.
🌦️ Weather Reminder: As we move into colder months, please remember to check the weather forecast daily and send your child with a coat, hat, and gloves when needed. Our students spend time outside each day as long as the weather allows, and we want everyone to stay warm and comfortable!
We wish all of our Nike families a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving Break! There will be no school from Monday, November 24 through Friday, November 28. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, December 1.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out via email or call the office.
Your Partner in Education,
Dr. Jessica Tollison

Tom the Turkey at Nike Elementary
In kindergarten, students earn a feather for Tom the Turkey when they score green on their iReady assignments. In 1st–4th grade, students earn a feather when they score 100% on their iReady lessons.
At the end of each day, students get to add their earned feathers to Tom the Turkey on our bulletin board. Before hanging them up, they also get to color and decorate their turkey feathers, making our display bright, festive, and full of student pride! 🦃💙

Nike PTO Sponsored McTeacher Night at Pacific McDonalds
Nike Elementary staff loved seeing our students and families at McTeacher Night! Thank you to everyone who stopped by—whether you grabbed dinner to go or dined in.
It was a wonderful evening, and thanks to your support, we raised $800 to go directly toward school activities.
A special thank-you to Pacific McDonald’s, the families of Nike, and our amazing staff for making this such a great night!
National School of Character Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
Nike Elementary held a special ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, November 18 to celebrate being named a 2025 National School of Character—one of only three schools in the MVRIII School District to receive this incredible honor! Even more exciting, several of our standout programs were recognized with National Promising Practice Awards. 🏆✨
These achievements reflect the passion, teamwork, and heart our students, staff, and families pour into making Nike a place where every learner can shine. We couldn’t be prouder—congratulations to our entire Nike community! 👏💙

Cold Weather Reminder
As we move further into fall, colder temperatures are on the way! Please remember to check the weather each morning and make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the conditions. When laying out school clothes for the next day, keep in mind that temperatures can be dangerously low for students walking to school or waiting at the bus stop.
For recess and other outdoor activities, we follow the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Cold Weather Guidelines:
-
10°F or below: Students will remain indoors
-
10–20°F: Outdoor time limited to 5 minutes
-
20–32°F: Outdoor time limited to 10–15 minutes
-
32–90°F: Outdoor time allowed as normal
Please note that these temperatures include the “feels like” (wind chill or heat index) temperature.
We want all students to enjoy their time outside safely. Unfortunately, we do not have enough coats for students to borrow. If your child does not have a coat, they may need to remain indoors during recess.
If your student needs a coat, please reach out to our school counselor, Shanna Raeker, by calling the school or emailing sraeker@mvr3.k12.mo.us.
And don’t forget the hats and gloves — they make a big difference!
Inclement Weather Communication
Temperatures are falling and with that comes wintery weather. The Meramec Valley R-III School District recognizes the challenges that result from school being canceled due to inclement weather. As such, we want to share some information to keep you informed about our district's procedures for school closings and delays due to weather.
In the case of inclement weather:
The district administration will make a decision as soon as they can. In general, school officials will not cancel school based on a forecast. However, there are occasional instances where decisions could be made when inclement weather appears to be inevitable.
When possible, the decision to cancel school may be made the night before, usually by 9:00 pm. However, in most situations, a decision isn’t made until the following morning. An early morning decision is typically made by 5:00 a.m. A decision to cancel school will be shared in the following ways: automated phone call, email, text notification through our mobile app, district social media sites, and local news television stations.
The district has a 2-hour late start option. This option would generally be used if the weather forecast indicates the conditions present in the early morning hours will be temporary and improved weather/temperatures are expected.
As we look ahead, we ask that all parents:
Create a plan for unexpected school closures and share the plan with your student. School cancellations due to weather are unavoidable and will happen at some point.
Please watch our district website, mobile app, and social media pages for information related to school closures. We will post periodic updates about the decision making process. We will not respond to questions submitted on social media asking if we plan to have school.
Recognize that snow itself rarely closes school. Snow in the forecast is not our primary concern. Rather, safety, visibility, road conditions, ice build-up, and the status of plowing are more important issues to consider. In addition, the capability of our staff to safely travel to school and for our maintenance department to clear sidewalks and parking lots have a large impact on our ability to have school.
As always, the highest priority for our district is the safety of our students and staff, for whom we will always err on the side of caution.

Be a WatchDOG! 🐾
A WatchDOG Dad (short for Dads of Great Students) is a father, grandfather, uncle, or other male role model who volunteers at a school to help create a positive and safe environment for students. The Watch D.O.G.S.® program is a national initiative that encourages men to get involved in schools by spending a day (or more) on campus helping with things like:
-
Greeting students as they arrive
-
Assisting in classrooms
-
Monitoring hallways, the cafeteria, or playground
-
Providing positive male role models
-
Promoting safety and school spirit
The goal of the program is to increase male involvement in education and strengthen the connection between families and schools.
We’re excited to welcome all parents, grandparents, and family members—men and women—to join as WatchDOG volunteers! You can help greet students, assist in classrooms, and make our school an even better place to learn. 💙 If you are interested in becoming a WatchDog, please use this link to sign up.
