Sand Ridge Elementary School
Striving for Excellence Everyday

Weekly Update 8.16
Hello Sharks!
I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer!
The next two weeks will include open house on Thursday 8/20 from 12:00-1:00 and 4:00-6:00. Kindergarten staggered start days begin Monday 8/24 and go through Wednesday 8/26. The first day of school for students is Monday August 24th!
On Monday 8/17 Sand Ridge teachers will create the 2026-2027 Class Dojo. When they create their classes, you will get a text or email from Class Dojo that you have been added to a class. This is your students teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. Teachers will also send a welcome message when they create the classes. If you have not been added to a class by Tuesday 8/18, the contact information we have for you may be wrong. Please contact the school or email patty.cole@onslow.k12.nc.us on Tuesday if you are not in a class.
School will begin at 8:30am and end at 3:30pm for the 2026-2027 school year. Doors will open at 8:10am for students and the tardy bell will ring at 8:30am. Dismissal will begin at 3:30pm. No checkouts will be permitted after 3:00pm. Cars are not permitted in the carpool lane until 3:00pm. See the flyer below for carpool procedures.
For the safety of our students, please adhere to the following guidelines for the morning drop off procedures. Drop off begins at 8:10am and ends at 8:30am, in the car pool line. If you would like to escort your student into the school on the first day, see below for the guidelines.
- Kindergarten students can be walked into the classroom on their staggered attendance day, then walked to the classroom door on Thursday 8/27 and Friday 8/28.
- First grade students can be walked to the classroom door on Monday August 24th. The remainder of the week, First grade students may be walked to the front lobby.
- Second through Fifth grade students can be walked to the front lobby the week of 8/24-8/28 (first week of school).
- If your child is eating breakfast, they will need to arrive close to 8:10am to allow enough time to eat breakfast in the cafeteria and still make it to class by 8:30am.
School for Kindergarten students on their staggered day will begin at 8:45am. On their staggered enrollment day parents should park in the carpool lot, (beside the school) and walk in the side breezeway. All kindergarten students will begin coming to school daily at 8:10am beginning Thursday, August 27th.
First through Fifth grade parents walking their students to the lobby the first week of school must park in the front parking lots. Beginning the week of August 31st all students must either be dropped off in the carpool line or ride the bus to school.
Expect afternoon delays the first couple of weeks of school. Your patience is appreciated. Kindergarten students will not be dropped off without a parent present to receive them off the bus. Beyond a one hour delay or throughout the year, for emergency bus situations, call SRES at 910-326-5199 or email jacob.mabry@onslow.k12.nc.us or cathy.dalimonte@onslow.k12.nc.us. Phone lines will often be tied up in the afternoon.
Any bus routes and driver concerns need to be directed to the Swansboro Transportation Coordinator at 910-326-1436. SRES does not have a direct way to contact buses in route. This must be done through the transportation department. If you cannot reach the transportation department in the afternoon, contact the school.
Students will begin the school year with the Kindness Kickoff. See the newsletter below for how you can support student learning at home.

Communication is Critical!
1. The teacher is always the first point of contact. If you cannot resolve an issue after meeting with the teacher, please schedule an appointment to meet with administration.
2. See our data manager (Patty Cole) to sign up for Infinite Campus. This gives you up to date info on student attendance and assignments.
3. Pay attention to the weekly ALL CALL and EMAIL that is sent out every Sunday evening. If you are not receiving the call and email, please let Patty Cole (patty.cole@onslow.k12.nc.us) know so that we can make sure your info. is up to date. This is the method that we will use to communicate with parents in the event of an emergency, so you need to make sure that you are receiving these calls.
4. Check out our school website: https://sres.onslow.k12.nc.us/
5. Check out our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Sand.Ridge.Elementary
6. If there are custody issues, we must have a copy of the current custody paperwork on file with a judge's signature. If not, both parents have equal access to the student and their educational records.
7. If you have concerns regarding bus routes, stops, schedules and drivers, please direct those concerns to our transportation coordinator Allison Massey at 326-1436. SRES does not have direct communication with the buses; therefore, this must ghttps://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/departments/operations-facilities/operations-departments/school-transportatioo through the transportation dept. Please remember if you would like to stay up to date with bus changes and delays, please download the Edulog Parent Portal App. More info can be found here: https://www.onslow.k12.nc.us/departments/operations-facilities/operations-departments/school-transportation/edulog-parent-portal
Cell Phones
The widespread use of smartphones helps users stay connected, but also raises privacy concerns. According to a 2018 study by the Pew Research Center, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online “almost constantly."
Help keep your children safe by asking the following questions regularly.
- What do you use your phone for the most? Can you show me some of your favorite apps?
- Do you know everyone you have as a contact in your phone and on different apps?
- Has anyone ever taken an embarrassing picture of you without your permission?
- Have you ever taken an embarrassing picture of someone else? What did you do with it?
- Have you ever talked with someone you first met online on your cellphone?
- What would you do if someone sent you a text or picture that was inappropriate?
- Do you know how to turn off GPS and turn on privacy settings for the different apps you use?
Reinforce
- Expectations and guidance for when children are allowed to use their cellphones, what websites they can visit, and what apps they can download.
- The important of privacy. Know an app’s purpose before your child downloads it. Who are the users? What type of privacy settings are available?
- The idea that anything a user sends from their phones can be easily forwarded and shared.
- The possible consequences of sending sexually explicit or provocative images or text messages with their phones.
