Responding to Data
Included in this 3 part series is an interactive overview of MTSS, Data-Based Decision Making (K-3 & 4-12), Fidelity and Intensifying Instruction. Each recorded webinar is 15-20 minutes in length and includes guidance in best practices in responding to literacy data. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your Regional Literacy Consultant for follow-up and support.
From the Iowa Department of Education
After the winter window ends, healthy indicator reports in Student Success will reflect the new data. Check out the Change reports (HI #4 and #6), which will have updated information showing growth for the current school year from Fall to Winter.
Interventions
A review of healthy indicator data has shown that there are many districts not entering interventions in Student Success as required. Panorama’s Student Success system is the official data collection for ELI intervention requirements. If you are unsure about how to set up interventions, here is a link to a set of articles to help learn about intervention management: https://iowa-mtss.helpscoutdocs.com/category/123-create-interventions In addition to the requirement, we believe that when interventions and progress monitoring data are available together, the tools for evaluating intervention effectiveness will be valuable for many school leaders concerned about improving outcomes for students.
Literacy Status
The Student Success system automatically calculates literacy status for all K-6 students. Please use these for all literacy status decisions and actions. There is no need to calculate literacy status yourselves. You can find the literacy status for an individual student on his/her individual page, in the demographic information at the top of the page. There are literacy status filters for most reports on the left side in the demographic filters. Literacy status is not represented by color-coding in either FAST or Student Success. Book List for Children from Infancy to Adolescence
This is a curated list of books for infancy to adolescence from the Haskins Global Lab. This list is meant to give parents a starting point into the wonderful world of books. Here are just a few titles that are great to pick from. The books listed here have been read and selected by librarians, researchers, and parents from the quality of their stories, their appeal to children of specific ages, and their Lexile levels. This means they are both interesting and appropriate for children and youth at the different stages of reading development. The booklist has been structured into four stages to fit best with the readers’ level: Early Childhood, Early Readers, Developing Readers, and More Advanced Readers.
Understanding by Design
Building an instructional plan around the overarching learning we want from our students, anchors every piece of the unit - the standards, the assessment, the instruction - in the learning outcome. In other words, start at the desired end goal and build backwards from there. Here is a great website on Backward Design approach: videos, templates, information, and more.
