Is it Bullying? Bullying Prevention Education at Findley Elementary

Findley's School Improvement Plan is focused on creating a safe and thriving environment for all students. Using our Kindness in the Classroom concepts as expectations for kindness, along with counseling lessons and school-wide social emotional learning, we can educate students on positive problem solving and also give students tools on how to respond when conflicts come up. These are all important skills for students that helps us create a safe and welcoming environment. We also know that there are times these expectations and guidelines are not always followed, and we want to make sure students, families, and staff understand the situation clearly in order to be able to address it appropriately. An important piece of this understanding is to educate our students and families on what bullying is and what it is not. We want to share this common language with you so that as adults who care about and support students, we are all on the same page, with the same information. We hope this will be useful as we guide our students through different situations and will contribute to making Findley a safe environment for all.

Using common language to help us talk about and work through conflict is an important tool for adults supporting students. Here is the language we will be using and the tools your student has been taught to respond and/or get help in different situations.

An Ouch Moment An Ouch Moment

An ouch moment is when someone says or does something hurtful but it's unintentional or impulsive and they do it once.

It’s a small problem because you’re safe, you’re not in any danger, and you don’t need to tell an adult because you can solve it on your own.

A mean moment is when someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once or maybe twice.

It’s a big problem if you don’t feel safe, you feel like you are in danger, your body or well-being is hurt, you feel like you need to tell an adult (person on duty or perhaps a trusted adult depending on the problem).

Bullying Bullying

zoom_out_map

Bullying is when someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they keep doing it, even when you tell them to stop or show them that you're upset.

It's bullying because it's repeated (has happened more than once or twice), targeted (directed at a specific person or people), and on purpose (not unintentional or impulsive).

What can we do? What can we do?

We teach students:

  • If you see bullying happening…..

    • If you feel safe be an upstander but remember to also tell an adult.

    • Talk to your teacher or another trusted school adult

    • Tell your parent or caregiver

    • Fill out a “note” for Mrs. Gotfried

  • If you are being bullied….
