BRHS Seniors Sign to Compete at the Next Level

Recently, we had the opportunity to celebrate Isaiah Gaddis & Jacob Garcia as they signed letters of intent to further their academic and athletic careers in college. Isaiah will be attending Southern Nazarene University & Jacob will be attending Kansas Wesleyan University. Both students will be playing football in college at their respective universities.

This makes three 2024 graduates who have signed with college programs as Kaden Jenkins signed to play volleyball at the University of Jamestown earlier in the year. We are very excited to see what these students achieve in the future!

Senior Information

It's hard to believe that graduation is already almost here. Senior parents, please be on the lookout for information coming home with your students about senior activities. New dates, times, and scholarship information is being posted almost daily in the Class of 2024 Google Classroom. Please find some of the important dates below.

We know that there has been some confusion about the date/time for graduation due to an outdated copy of the school calendar. To clarify, 2024 Graduation will be on Thursday, May 23rd at 7:30pm. Graduation will be held at Cottonwood Creek Church in Allen, TX.

Capturing Kids' Hearts March Focus: Perseverance

As you probably know, BRISD is a Capturing Kids' Hearts (CKH) school district. As a part of our efforts to help our students learn about and exhibit certain character traits, we will be focusing on a specific trait each month. We will also be sharing a newsletter with you so that you will know what your student is learning about.

This month we are challenging students to work hard and stay determined. We are partnering with you to acknowledge your child’s achievement of goals- big and small! By helping your child develop perseverance now, you can prepare them to learn from their future failures and work hard to achieve future successes. This month, look for opportunities to teach and model the power of perseverance!

Happy Spring BRHS!

It is hard to believe we are getting closer to the end of the year. Our students have been enjoying participating in a wealth of activities from spring sports, to UIL, One Act Play and everything in between.

A few upcoming reminders:

If your student is planning to begin taking dual credit courses next year, please make sure your student checks their BRISD and Collin College email accounts. All registration will be done by Collin Counselor, Dr. Kristin. Lee, and will be strictly based off of your course requests that were submitted. The payment deadline for students taking dual credit summer courses is May 1st. The payment deadline for Fall 2024 classes is Wednesday, May 15th.

As a reminder, all seniors must have either submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or completed an opt out form. Graduation will be here before you know it!

Senate Bill 1888, 87th Texas Legislature, Regular Session, 2021, added Texas Education Code §28.0253, which establishes the Texas First Early High School Completion Program to allow public high school students who demonstrate early readiness for college to graduate early from high school.

The purpose of the Texas First Early High School Completion Program, in conjunction with the Texas First Scholarship Program (Texas Education Code, Chapter 56, Subchapter K-1), is to promote efficiency in the state public education system and incentivize the enrollment of high performing students at eligible institutions within the state of Texas. Please see the attached flyers for more information on this new program.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Precalculus

To conclude a unit over sequences and series in Precalculus, the students were required to take the amazing Fibonacci sequence (a really awesome number series discovered in nature) and use it to create their own patterns. It was painstaking work as all the measurements had to be drawn to the millimeter and slight mistakes would throw their entire project off. Everything is drawn and colored by hand (no photo copies or print outs were allowed). They were excited to see different and unexpected images coming alive as they made their projects.

The Blunt Truth of Cannabis Use Amongst Teens

Cannabis, marijuana, weed, grass, flower….. we have all heard at least one of these terms at some point in our lives. Marijuana can be consumed in many different ways including smoking, vaping, oils, teas and edibles. With more and more states making recreational cannabis use legal for adults 21+, what do parents and adolescents need to know about underage use?

Cannabis use among teens is at its highest level in the past 30 years. Approximately 37% of high school students and 8.3% of 8th graders have reported using cannabis. Cannabis use among teens and young adults can have harmful effects on brain development. The brain continues to develop until about 25 years old. The amount of THC (the psychoactive component of Cannabis that gives you the “high”) is 3 x as high compared to 25 years ago, increasing the impact on the brain. Educating yourself as a parent or guardian can help you be more prepared to have a conversation with your teen about marijuana use. Potential risks of marijuana use in teens can include impaired brain development; problems with concentration, problem solving, learning and memory; poor academic/job performance; increased risk of worsening mental health issues; lung issues if smoked/vaped; and interfering with absorption of prescribed medication. Not to mention the legal/disciplinary actions should they be caught possessing and/or consuming on school grounds.

What motivates teens to partake in cannabis use? Research suggests that most teens motivation was “to feel mellow, calm or relaxed-73%”, “to have fun with friends-50%”, “to stop worrying about a problem or forget bad memories-44%”, “to help with depression or anxiety-40%” (Connolly et al). Ultimately there are many factors that contribute to why teens use cannabis, including home life, school and community. Take action and talk to your teen about the repercussions of marijuana use. Check in frequently, help them establish healthy coping mechanisms and be clear on your expectations regarding marijuana and other drug use. Help your teen create an exit plan in the case they are offered marijuana. Peer pressure can be powerful, so coming up with a realistic strategy to handle the situation will empower your student to make good choices when it matters.

Tele-Behavioral Health at BRHS

Stress and emotional situations can be overwhelming for teenagers. Many young adults don’t know how to react and may act out. If you’ve noticed certain problematic behaviors with your teen, Children’s Health can help. Your teen can connect with a licensed behavioral health provider — right from school, right from a tablet. Together, we can identify and resolve small problems before they become big ones.
