Model UN
Log College’s Jr. Model UN Club attended their first preparatory conference on March 4th, at Temple University. The goal of Jr. Model UN is to work collaboratively to propose recommendations on solving two of the major world issues from the viewpoint of their assigned nation. Student delegates received badges that included their names, country (Japan), topics (Ensuring Healthy Oceans), and (Ending Hunger For All).
Upon arrival, students were split into small conference rooms based on their badges. Once in the conference rooms, delegates introduced themselves to delegates from other schools, learned conference etiquette, and group norms.
As the morning rolled on, delegates identified the parts of a resolution paper and reviewed sustainable development goals. In addition, delegates practiced creating resolutions using their research and provided Jr. UN Vocabulary.
Delegates will meet a few times to write, revise, and edit their resolutions that they will present at their final conference in May at Temple University.
7th Grade ELA
In 7th grade ELA, students have been reading the novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell. The focus of our analysis has been on how the pigs use language first to persuade and then to control the other animals on the farm. While dissecting this challenging text, the students have delighted in the characters' many examples of hypocrisy, as well as in debating just how the animals on the farm communicate with the neighboring humans.
One of our Focus Question Tasks was to argue which character was most influential in helping Napoleon to gain and maintain power over the farm. While the majority of students argued that speaker Squealer had the most influence through his speeches, others made strong cases for the bystander Boxer and the followers of the sheep. Here is an example of a very strong argument, written by Brooke C.
In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, Squealer is the most influential in helping Napoleon gain and maintain power. He keeps lying to manipulate the other animals into believing in Napoleon. For example, Squealer is in the middle of saying a speech to the animals, the novelist states, “I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labour upon himself.”(Orwell 55). This shows that Squealer twists the truth to make Napoleon look generous and selfless, even though Napoleon is actually taking more control for himself. By convincing the animals that Napoleon is making a “sacrifice” for them, Squealer makes them feel grateful instead of suspicious, so they are less likely to question his power. This allows Napoleon to take advantage of the animals by making them follow his decisions without putting up a fight. Furthermore, one evening, when Napoleon finally decided to build the windmill, the animals were unsettled, and Squealer quickly stepped in to reassure them with another manipulated explanation, the novelist says, “That evening Squealer explained privately to the other animals that Napoleon had never in reality been opposed to the windmill.”(Orwell 57). This proves that Squealer lies about Napoleon’s past opinions, so the animals will think Napoleon is always right and never makes mistakes. By changing the story, Squealer prevents the animals from seeing Napoleon as a hypocrite, which helps Napoleon keep their trust and stay in control of the farm. Because the animals still trust him, they continue to obey his orders and allow him to make all the decisions, which strengthens his authority and makes it easier for him to rule over them. In conclusion, Squealer’s manipulation and dishonesty are what truly allow Napoleon to gain power and keep it over the other animals.

7th Grade Art
Seventh Grade Art Students Shine in Still Life Drawings
Students in Mrs. Schenfelt’s Intermediate Art class have successfully wrapped up their drawing unit, producing impressive still life artworks. This project offered a deep dive into composition, the use of fundamental elements of art, and the fascinating interplay of light with various objects.
Each student chose a diverse array of objects, varying in size, shape, and value, and applied different composition techniques to elevate their artwork. They skillfully utilized lighting techniques and opted for either open or closed compositions while experimenting with bird's eye and ant's eye views for photographing their still life arrangements. Additionally, students explored the concept of value through shading, paying close attention to details and background elements, which added to the overall realism of their drawings.
6th Grade Social Studies
Our sixth grade Social Studies students have truly been bringing history to life! Students immerse themselves in the study of ancient civilizations while reinforcing important social studies skills such as interpreting timelines, analyzing maps, examining primary sources, and strengthening their reading and writing skills.
We recently concluded our Black History Month studies alongside our Ancient Egypt unit. One highlight of the unit was our interactive CSI-style investigation into the mystery of King Tut’s death, where students evaluated historical clues and formed their own conclusions. We wrapped up the unit with a fun and memorable mummy-wrapping contest to celebrate our learning!
In March, students will begin a Women’s History Month project while continuing their exploration of Ancient Greece. We are excited to keep discovering how the past shapes our world today!
