November Newsletter

Mrs. Stokes' Notes
November has already been such a busy month! I apologize that the newsletter is coming out a few days late! So far this first week of November has been full of catching up after the carnival and lots of exciting Chapman basketball!
At this time, I want to communicate my sincere appreciation to the Chapman Parent group, the Chapman Staff, the Anchor Point Community, and the many Homer High Students who made the carnival a success. The layout this year was extremely well thought out and the games were lots of fun. While I do not have exact numbers yet for how much this carnival generated, they will be shared at the upcoming site council meeting in detail. They will be also shared at upcoming parent group meetings.
At this time, the Chapman leadership team is working on updating the Chapman handbook. After much reflection about the handbook in relation to the Chapman mission statement, the discipline matrix needs to be reviewed. Much of the conversation has revolved around willful vs. forgetful behavior, one time behavior vs. a pattern of behavior. The leadership team's goal is to have a draft ready for the site council meeting that will be taking place on November 20th. If you are interested, please attend this meeting.
Finally, I want to highlight the heart and determination that is being shown by students throughout the Chapman building. More and more students are working above and beyond to make tremendous gains. Students are taking assessments and goals seriously. I had the privilege of acknowledging 86 students who met their reading goals first quarter and also acknowledged many new faces who had top scores on fall benchmarking assessments. Students who are here at school everyday, focusing, and learning are making great strides of academic progress. I am proud of them and their growth. The Chapman basketball teams are another example of determination and heart. The three Chapman teams have been so much fun to watch as many games have been nail-biter finishes. The growth that the athletes have shown has been significant from the first game and we are only 3 weeks into the season! Way to go Eagles!!
As always, Chapman students are successful because of the strong partnership between school and home. We appreciate all that parents are doing to support what is happening at Chapman. It demonstrates commitment when kids make it to school consistently, it shows commitment when kids get their reading goals, and it shows commitment when so many of our students attend after school clubs. I appreciate the dedication that is shown by families each day. If ever you have questions or need support in working with your child, please swing by the office.
With Gratitude,
Mrs. Stokes

Volunteers
All Chapman volunteers and visitors to classrooms, the lunchroom, etc. must have a volunteer screening completed. If you plan on volunteering for clubs or sports as an assistant coach or parent helper, you must also have training on concussion and sudden cardiac arrest. Trainings are linked below. You do not need a screening completed to attend Chapman sponsored events such as award's assemblies, parent teacher conferences and family activities.
Volunteer Coaches
Volunteer Coaches
We appreciate those who are willing to assist in coaching a sport or club. In an effort to ensure that kids are safe, the following trainings are required for those volunteer at practices or games regularly.
Protecting Students from abuse
Message from Homer OPUS
Hello Eagle Ensemble,
Thank you to everyone who helped with cardboard violin making! Cardboard violins are an important part of our violin program. Building a violin with their families helps our students invest in their violin education. In the classroom, cardboard violins are used to build violin skills like playing position, rest position, and bow holds. They help students learn violin care and responsibility so our students are ready to safely use their real violin in the future.
Sincerely,
Dr. Elizabeth White
October Highlights
5th Grade Debris Clean Up
In October, 5th grade joined with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies for a marine debris cleanup day. 5th grade collected over 25 pounds of trash from the campgrounds along the Anchor River. That is 25 pounds of trash that will not end up in our ocean. Way to go, 5th grade!

3rd Grade Projects
In our knowledge unit we studied the human body and how all of our systems work together. As students learned about each system, they created their own life size systems to showcase how each system works.

6th-8th Celebration
On Wednesday, October 22nd, the Chapman Eagles middle school went on a field trip to the SPARC to celebrate good behavior in quarter one. Students had a great time playing soccer, basketball, ping pong, riding scooters, and hanging out with one another disconnected from devices.
