The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a Work Session on Monday, Oct. 26 to discuss the School Resource Officer Program Review.

School Board Votes to Retain SRO Program, Make Program Improvements

The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board voted to retain the district's School Resource Program during its Oct. 26 work session, adopting changes to the program as recommended by district staff.

The SRO Program Review included a look at the program as a whole; feedback from students, staff, parents, and community members; and research of other SRO programs and school security models.

Superintendent Dr. Kathy Ludwig presented key findings produced by the district's program review during the Oct. 26 meeting. In particular, staff highlighted findings 1 and 4. Finding 1 showed that the WLWV SRO Program needs additional definition and clarity. Finding 4 shows that some model SRO programs may contribute to student success in school and life.

Recommended Improvements

Draft new Memoranda of Understanding including a shared philosophy of restorative justice, collaborative approach to the program's goals and action plan, clarity of roles and responsibilities, range of multifaceted trainings, annual review of referral data, and communication to stakeholders among other changes.

2. Hire an additional social worker in the district to expand hours of support at our three high schools.

3. Further the district's Goal No. 1 of "disrupting systems of racism" through inclusion of police departments in WLWV equity summits, equity trainings, and cultural events; expand and support SRO's relationship-building opportunities; and continue inclusion of both police department's involvement in quartly first responder safety meetings and district safety committee meetings among other changes.

The Board generally noted that the recommended changes are a strong first step and that more adjustments could be made in subsequent years. Director Dylan Hydes expressed concerns with the thoroughness and depth of the review. The recommendations were passed by a 4-1 vote.

The video recording of the work session will be posted to the district website later in the week.
