Corbett Grade School Principal, Michelle Dawkins

Dear Families,

Our students and staff have settled into their classrooms this past month. Our K/1 students have begun their exploration of space, specifically the sun and the moon. The 2/3 classrooms have been learning about community helpers and the branches of government. This past week, some of our community helpers shared with our 2/3 students how they support our community. The 4/5 classrooms have been creating land art both around the school and also at Oxbow Park. When walking through the hallways, it is lovely to observe such happy and engaged children and the amazing educators that support them. We are fortunate to have such a supportive school community.

On Thursday, September 29, we held our first evacuation drill (fire drill). During our monthly drills, our staff makes sure that all students exit our building safely and quickly. Once out of the building staff members check in themselves and their students by using an online system, Navigate. This system helps ensure that everyone is out of the building and that all students and staff are accounted for. During the month of October we will practice an earthquake drill as we participate in The Great Oregon Shake Out on Thursday, October 20, at 10:20am. We will also have a visit from the Corbett Volunteer Fire Department to participate in Fire Safety.

Youth Truth Survey

Corbett School District will be participating in the YouthTruth Student Survey between October 3 and October 28. All parents and staff, and students who are in grade 3 and above, will have an opportunity to participate in the survey over the next few weeks. Link to the family survey will be shared on Monday, October 3 and it will remain open until Friday, October 28.

The YouthTruth Student Survey is a Nationally-recognized survey used in hundreds of schools and districts across the country, surveying hundreds of thousands of students. The survey asks students about their experiences in the school and with their teachers, including how engaged they are at school, the rigor of their coursework, and preparedness for the future. Our school, other schools, and researchers may use such information for developing plans to help schools and teachers improve. For information about this survey, please visit http://youthtruthsurvey.org, or speak to a school administrator.

Although we want to hear from all students, participation in this survey is voluntary.

Your child’s ratings will not be identified in any reports because results are shared at the group level. Personally identifiable information will not be released to any third party.

Please be aware that under federal law, you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your child. If you would like to do so, you can view a copy of the survey at school.

Please complete this form and submit it to opt your child out of the survey.

DIBELS Screening

In July of 2015, Senate Bill 612 was passed by the Oregon Legislature. SB 612 requires public schools in Oregon to develop a plan to ensure that every student who is first enrolled at a public school in the state of Oregon for kindergarten or first grade receives a screening for risk factors of dyslexia. This school year we will screen our K-3 students three times throughout the school year using the DIBELS 8th edition screener. DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills.

This screener is one of the least invasive, and one of the most effective screening tools available. This is just one way that our teachers identify students that might need extra support as they learn to read or possible reading intervention services. Our goal is that all students read at or above grade level by the third grade.

REMINDER: Arrival and Dismissal Information

Assigned Drop-off and Pick-up Areas

Zone 1

  • ALL K/1 classrooms
  • Mrs. Arndt and Ms. Karki
Zone 2
  • ALL 4/5 classrooms
  • Mrs. Mack, Ms. Layton, and Mrs. Lewis

Go to the youngest student's pick-up location, if they have younger siblings.

If that sibling is a fourth or fifth grade student, please do not arrive until 3:40pm or later.

For security purposes, ALL families must use car pick up at the end of the day.

Drop-off begins at 7:40am (not earlier)

End time for K-3 classrooms: 3:35pm

End time for 4/5 classrooms: 3:40pm

The times are staggered to help with traffic flow. Families with students in a fourth or fifth grade classroom should not join the pick up line before 3:40pm.

Things to help improve the flow of traffic:

  • Please remain in your car for drop-off and pick-up
  • Pull over to the waiting area, if you need to buckle or unbuckle your child
  • Have your child ready to exit your car
