November 2024 Updates from the School Counseling Office
2025-2026 FAFSA is Now Open!
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2025-2026 school year is now open!
How to complete the FAFSA:
1. Create an FSA ID. This creates a username and password for you to use to login to the FAFSA to complete the application. Students should use a personal email address (not school email address) to create the FSA ID.
2. Parent should also create an FSA ID using their social security number. If parents file their taxes separately, both parents will need to create their own individual FSA ID.
3. Click here to get started on the application.
What To Do After You Apply
A reminder to seniors who have submitted their applications on what you should be doing now:
1. Move colleges to "Applied" column on SCOIR if you have not already done so.
2. Create your portal account for each school you applied to. The college will email you with instructions to create this account. This will be where you access your decision and financial aid letter.
3. Check your portals to make sure you are not missing any additional parts of the application (such as sending SAT scores, the SRAR or CSS profile).
4. Check on SCOIR to see if your documents have been sent. You can check under "My Colleges", and for each individual college that you have moved to the "Applied" column, you will see "Docs Sent" with a number next to it. Remember that it can sometimes take weeks for colleges to update the portal to show that they have received everything. In the meantime, you can check SCOIR to confirm your documents have been sent.
Next Seminar: Decisions & Scholarships
Our next senior seminar will begin on December 18th and run through January 8th. We will be reviewing the different types of decisions students may receive from colleges and what those mean, as well as how to apply for scholarships. If you would like to get a head start on scholarships, please see the following resources:
- WHS scholarship list found in students' SCOIR drive
- Websites such as https://www.scholarships.com/ and https://goingmerry.com/
- Other resources such as https://www.mefa.org/ and https://finaid.org/
