April Highlights
May Message from Clara Kang
April Happenings
We started April’s Neurodiversity Month with a read-aloud during morning announcements titled This is My Brain! Our students participated in engaging scavenger walks throughout the hallways. These walks highlighted successful individuals with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia. It was magical to hear students refer to these little posters when they were discussing it in one of my classroom visits. We were also joined by a visitor from our district, our Administrator of CPSE and Elementary Special Education, Stephanie Purcell, who visited two classrooms and conducted a read-aloud.
Seeing examples of people of all ages who have overcome challenges and contributed positively to the world was truly inspirational for our students. This experience promoted acceptance and understanding within our school community. Another great way to support our vision of an inclusive community: it is not too late to have your students enter the PTA Multicultural Unity Art Contest. This is all about proudly sharing your culture and how it is significant to shaping you as a person. I hope to see all of our budding artists at the district celebration, which will take place on May 29th at Southwoods Middle School.
Earth Day was special as we announced the launch of our new paper recycling program during our morning announcement with our Administrator of Stem Barbara Fournier, who read the book titled Earth Day Every Day. This book connected how we can help the earth with recycling. During a recent Google Meet morning announcement, Student Council members showed examples of recyclable paper items. Some of our first-grade students shared their recycling posters, which promotes paper recycling within our school building. We appreciate our students' efforts to make our school more sustainable. Thank you for your support in protecting our environment!
Our students have a busy month ahead. We are really looking forward to field day! Our plans are ready to have a wonderful event on May 29th, which will bring the whole school community together. Please look out for a specific field day letter explaining the start and end time for all students and for the flow of the day. We are excited to see you there!
Instructional Highlights: Grade 2
Second graders are becoming skilled authors and publishers in the genres of poetry and realistic fiction. We began by exploring various types of poems, studying famous poets, and reading their work. Classes celebrated the unit by creating our own poetry books to share. Currently, we are developing fictional characters and bringing them to life through descriptive writing techniques. Our readers are creating movies in their minds and sitting on the edge of their seats, eager to see how our characters solve problems and learn meaningful life lessons through our well-developed story plots.
Instructional Highlights: Grade 3
Third-grade students are diving into the fascinating world of forces and interactions! They're learning about pushes and pulls, how objects move, and the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. Through hands-on activities and experiments, they are discovering the basic principles that govern motion and how forces shape the world around them.
Instructional Highlight: Enrichment - Physical Education
Grades K-3
Our students in grades K-3 participated in our “Rain Drop Game”. The objective of this game was for students to practice underhand and overhand throwing techniques while engaging in imaginative play. Students tried to throw all the raindrops (the fleece balls) back into the center of our cloud (large bin). Students worked together with the class, racing against the clock to return all rain drops to the cloud before the timer went off!
Grades 4-5
Our students in grades 4 & 5 participated in our European handball unit. European handball, also known as team handball, is a team game where students practice the skills of scoring, defending, throwing/catching and goal tending. This type of team game unit provided students with opportunities for team collaboration, strategy building and healthy competition.
