A little note from Mercedes A little note from Mercedes

Happy March, everyone! There’s a lot happening this month, and I hope to see you at some of these events!

I wanted to share a little bit about what's happening in the office. As you may have seen, Ann Rust recently retired from her longtime role as Master Gardener Coordinator. As you can image, we are in a time of transition and working hard to ensure everything continues to operate as smoothly as possible. With that in mind, and with the growing season creeping up on us, please feel free to reach out to me with your horticulture questions.

I would also like to mention that while gardening questions may be coming to mind for many of you, I personally am starting to think about a field I hope to renovate this spring at my house, and the possibilities on what I may want to plant. As a reminder there is the Perennial Forage Species Selection Tool available if you find yourself in the same shoes as me, and are looking to rejuvenate a field or pasture.

As always, don't hesitate to contact me with any questions you have, and I hope to see you around the county!

The University of Minnesota Extension is excited for another year of the Wildlife

Webinar Series this spring! This year’s series will explore birds of Minnesota and habitat

considerations.

Birds play a critical role in their environment, but bird populations are declining across the

globe. What are these critical roles they play, and how can you support their habitat needs here in

Minnesota, specifically the northeastern part of the state?

Learn how to manage your land for bird habitat in this three part webinar series. Sessions will

start with an introduction to conservation terminology and research on Northeastern Minnesota

bird populations from the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI). Then we will highlight

the Forestry for Minnesota Birds Guidebook, which can help you reach your forest habitat goals

and bird habitat needs. Lastly, learn how to assess your site, create conservation plans for

promoting bird habitat, and discover steps you can take on your property, regardless of its size.

These sessions will take place over the lunch hour, from 12-1 pm, on Wednesdays in April. This

event is free, but preregistration is required. To register, go to z.umn.edu/WildlifeSeriesBirds.

Register once to attend one or all sessions as you wish!

● April 1: Defining Habitat & Researching Birds

● April 8: Bird Ecological Importance & Habitat Use

● April 15: Your Land as Bird Habitat

Call for Free Lime Call for Free Lime

I’m looking for landowners who are interested in receiving free lime to help improve soil pH on their properties. Please note that this is not an immediate-delivery program—transport and scheduling can take some time. I am looking for producers with sizable acreage, ideally 10 or more in need of adjustment. If you’re interested and not in urgent need of lime, feel free to contact Mercedes at moffe029@umn.edu or 218‑384‑8681.
