Message from the Principal Message from the Principal

Hello HSS Families,

The above photo is of Ms. Saine's second grade class heading down the hall on our recent Blackout Spirit Day. The students and staff have been enjoying this new tradition. Our next spirit day will be on November 8th and the students can wear red, white, blue, and camo in honor of Veterans Day. More information on our Veterans Day event will be coming home in backpacks. Please make a note that we will not have an open K-2 School Sing on Friday, the 8th.

We will be holding our annual Halloween parade on the 31st at 1:45 on the high school track. Students can bring costumes to school in their backpacks and they will put them on right before the parade. Parents are welcome to come out to the track and watch. The parade will end around 2:15 and the students will return to their classrooms. Parents will return at 3:00 for our regular dismissal. Please note that the event usually draws a lot of families and parking can be really tight so plan to carpool, walk, or ride a bike if possible. The weather looks great for Halloween.

We also have a number of families celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, on the 31st. Many thanks to our students who will be performing Diwali dances and our parents for providing traditional snacks in some classrooms. Please see the information below on the newly formed Cultural Celebration Committee.

Thank you,

Leah Wheelan, Principal

Also, we've been asked to keep our students off of the high school railings and zig zag ramps leading up to the outside high school gym door. Thank you.

Vision Screening by the Lion’s Club

On Friday several volunteers from the Lion’s Club graciously visited our school to perform a vision screening for each student. This is a non - invasive screening that very successfully and effectively identifies vision concerns. Each student will receive a handout with an explanation of the results this week.

It is strongly recommended that your child follow - up with an appointment with an eye doctor if your child was identified as needing a referral. Should you have any questions or how to connect with an eye doctor in the area, please let me know. ALSO, if you need financial assistance for the eye appointment and glasses, let me know. The Lion’s Club provides financial assistance to students.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. What does this mean?

Down Syndrome is the most common condition involving chromosomes. Chromosomes are tiny parts in a person’s cell that contain genes. Genes control how a person looks and how a body works. People with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome 21 or partial chromosome 21. Therefore, they have a total of 47 chromosomes instead of the typical 46. People with Down Syndrome go to school, work, and participate in activities.

How can you celebrate all the amazing people in the world with Down Syndrome? Wear your wild socks on March 21, 2025 for National Down Syndrome Day and to help raise awareness about Down Syndrome. Socks are said to look like chromosomes, so people all over the world have been wearing bright colored socks on this day to celebrate.

Are you in need of a thermometer?? Email me and I will send one home with your child.

Reminder: Student Flu Clinic: Thursday, 10/31

If you would like your child to receive a flu shot at school, please return the form and be sure to complete the front AND back.

Need a COVID vaccine? Both APD and DHMC are offering appointments to children and adults. Schedule your appointment now.

GOT CLOTHES? Do you have clothes that no longer fit your child? Please consider donating them to HSS. Specifically, I am looking for shorts and pants for both girls and boys. Thank you for your consideration.

Stay well,
