Grade 3 News for October

Grade 3 News forOctober

September's Highlights September's Highlights

Third graders had an exciting visit from the Raptor Center, where they got to see real birds of prey up close and learn all about their habitats and hunting skills. They also went on bird walks with binoculars, spotting local birds in their natural habitat, practicing careful observation and identification skills. These experiences brought their science lessons to life in a fun and unforgettable way! Click on the link to see photos and a couple videos!

Music

In Mrs. Luna's music classes we will be focusing on singing accurate pitches using an expanded knowledge of solfege. We will also be performing accompaniments to a song together!

Media

Grade three students are finding good fit books in the library. We have learned how to place a "hold" on a book using our library management system, Destiny.

STEM Identities STEM Identities

Classrooms shared one activity that they did this month that showed they were STEM students.

Mrs. Kufahl/ Mrs. Caven: We were STEM students during our bird walk when we used our senses to look for birds and other interesting things in the Weaver Lake Nature Center.

Ms. Lahtinen: We were STEM students during our bird walks when we observed nature and the birds that live in the wild habitat behind Weaver Lake Elementary.

Mr. Tourville: We were STEM students during our bird walks when we observed birds using our ears and eyes and looked for features to help us identify different kinds of birds.

Ms. Yang: We were STEM students during our bird life cycle flow map activity because we used the flow map to collect information on our bird's life cycle.

Looking Foward Looking Foward

Here's what we're going to be learning about in October.

  • CKLA: animal classification - using nonfiction text features, recalling information, and comparing and contrasting - animal research projects
  • Writing: opinion paragraph
  • Math: introduction to multiplication, ratio tables, arrays, number lines, and story problems
  • STEM: ornithology - study of birds
  • October 14 - Science From Scientists
  • October 15 - Star Lab

Reminders

  • Please remind your child to bring their Take Home Folder and Planner to and from school.
  • Families are encouraged to leave a pair of gym shoes at school. Please have your students dress for the weather
  • Students should read for 20 minutes each night.

STEM at Home STEM at Home

One of the big ideas that third graders will be working on in their STEM unit is looking at different things animals do - like hiding, finding food, or protecting themselves - and explaining which strategies help them stay alive.

So here are some things you can do at home...

Animal Detective Walk

    • Go on a neighborhood or park walk and look for birds, squirrels, insects, or other animals.
    • Talk about what those animals might be eating, how they find shelter, or how they stay safe.

Camouflage Game

    • Hide a small toy (like a plastic animal) in different places—on grass, in leaves, on the sidewalk.
    • Have your child find it and notice which places make it harder to see the toy, just like camouflage helps animals.

Build a Shelter

    • Use pillows, blankets, or sticks and leaves outside to make a simple "animal shelter."
    • Talk about how animals build homes to protect themselves.
