Banned Books Week Oct 3-9

2025-2026 has seen more books banned from libraries than IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICA. Often, these book banning efforts are made by specific lobbyists rather than by the majority of parents in communities. At DNHS library, we strongly believe parents should have a say in what their respective children read. We also believe no adult should impede access to books for other peoples' children. As a Teacher Librarian, I value the opportunity to read alongside students, providing a safe environment to discuss the topics they come across. I also value the opportunity to partner with parents to fund books that are intellectually stimulating and diverse, so that all students are represented by the books in our collection. For more information, as well as statistics about the troubling phenomenon of book banning, please see the American Library Association's website. Side note: as most parents know, getting a student hooked on a book is a triumph. Getting a student away from the troubling content on their phones is a real struggle. I'd love to see challenges come to social media companies instead of to literature!

Carrie by Stephen King

I read this book when I was in high school, and it remains a cult classic today. Plus, the old version of this movie is still disturbing. I haven' t seen the latest version. Carrie is a high school misfit. The mean kids take bullying to a whole new level. But the psychological horror Carrie feels at her predicament unleashes a power from deep within her. Her fury carries vengeance with it. This book is not for the faint of heart.

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

A perfect marriage goes violently wrong when a wife kills her husband, prompting the her to be incarcerated in a psychiatric facility. She stops speaking. Yet, her doctor becomes obsessed with uncovering her secrets. This book has the biggest twist I've ever read - don't miss it!

The Dark Becomes Her by Judy I. Lin

This is a Rick Riordan Presents novel - so you know it's going to be a reliable page turner. Ruby Chen is a diligent student, a exacting pianist, and a dutiful daughter. When the dead that she has always had a knack for spying target her little sister, she is forced to put perfection in perspective. Might it be more important to break the rules to save her? I love the family dynamics in this story, which is set in Chinatown, and involves ancient Taiwanese mythology.
