Module 11: Written Compostion Module 11: Written Compostion

In Module 11, we learned the importance of writing and how writing develops over time. In order to support students as they become effective writers, teachers need to understand how to build and nurture classroom communities of writers throughout the whole process—from planning to publication. Teachers know that through writing, students develop literacy knowledge (purpose, audience, genre, and structure), as well as the conventions of writing. Research suggests that multilingual writers move fluidly between their languages, drawing from all their linguistic resources when they write.

Writing is one of the most enriching things. It allows you to create new realities or transform existing ones.

You learn to write by writing. It's like walking, running, swimming, or playing any game, you learn by doing and with practice you get better. And you also learn to write by reading. The more you read, the better you will write.

Writing Process

REMEMBER that the writing process is NOT linear. Each student will be at a different stage of the writing process throughout the workshop and will work at their own pace. Additionally, each student can also enter and exit the writing process throughout a piece of writing. The pace of sessions should NOT be determined based on completion of work.

Oracy

Oracy needs to be a part of writing instruction. Encourage biliterate learners to share their experiences with each other prior to writing in order to foster collaboration, community, and the sharing of thoughts, ideas, and language.

Don't forget to include ORACY as part of your writing process!!
