College & Career Chronicles with Ms. Stevie

January 6, 2023 January 6, 2023

Welcome Back, Lakers!

The College & Career Center is open to welcome students during Support Seminars, lunch, and after school! You are able to just pop in during lunch and after school, however, you will need to sign up for Support Seminar through Flexi Sched. The College & Career Center is next to Joe’s Boathouse. You are also welcome to schedule an appointment with Ms. Stevie at your convenience.

Check it out! Do you see the pennant of your future college?

Public vs. Private Public vs. Private

The main difference between public and private colleges/universities are where they receive their funding. Public colleges and universities are funded by the federal government while private institutions are supported by their own endowment funds and students' tuition fees. Though private colleges and universities have a more expensive price tag, they often offer generous financial aid packages to cut down on overall cost of attendance.

This article from US News breaks down the differences quite nicely.

College visits are winding down...

While there are no more scheduled college visits to LOHS, you are always welcome to set up an individual appointment with the Admissions Rep at the college/university you are interested in. If you need help finding your rep, send Ms. Stevie an email and she will track the information down.

College Acceptances

As those acceptances start to trickle in, students should do a few things:

  1. That final college essay was sent and you have heard back. Celebrate!
  2. Log into Naviance and click the box that indicates you were accepted.
  3. Visit the College & Career Center to notify Ms. Stevie. She wants to celebrate with you! And when you decide where you're headed in the fall (don't worry, you still have plenty of time), be sure to let her and your counselor know!
  4. Remember, senior year is not over just because you received a college acceptance. Continue to study and do all of your work.

Trade Highlight of the Month - Massage Therapist Trade Highlight of the Month - Massage Therapist

Massage therapists treat clients by using touch and pressure to manipulate the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia of the body. They aid in the general wellness of a client by relieving pain, rehabilitating injuries, reducing stress, and increasing relaxation.

The average base salary of a massage therapist is $37.64. However, Oregon is listed as a state where massage therapists earn more and typically makes 9% more than the national average.

Pros + Cons of Being a Massage Therapist in 2022 | Income, Burnout, Staying Healthy

Types of Massage Therapists

  1. Deep tissue massage: Widely used to treat chronic aches and pains, deep tissue massage targets areas of tension or tightness by applying concentrated pressure to the sub-layer of muscles and fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles.
  2. Hot stone massage: The techniques of a regular massage are applied. However, the therapist also works with hot stones, typically basalt, that are placed on specific parts of the body or held in the therapists hands to allow the therapist to get deeper into the muscles without more pressure.
  3. Medical massage: In addition to stress relief and relaxation, a medical massage focuses on a medical need. It is often used to manage pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, relieve nerve compression, improve digestion, increase flexibility or treat other health care concerns. The therapist may use a broader set of modalities, such as Trigger Point Therapy or Myofascial Release, to offer health recovery.
  4. Prenatal massage: Prenatal massage addresses different needs through varying techniques. Swedish Massage is the recommended massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts.
  5. Sports massage: Sports massage releases and reduces tension in muscles, improves circulation and encourages the removal of waste products such as lactic acid during high intensity activity and can help to relax the body.
  6. Swedish massage: This classic massage technique offers a gentle way to promote relaxation by releasing muscle tension.

Becoming a Massage Therapist

Interested in exploring a massage therapy program? According to the Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists, the state of Oregon requires a total of 625 educational hours related to massage. Of these, 200 hours must be in the health sciences, including Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, and Pathology while 300 hours must be in Massage Theory and Practical Application, Clinical Practice, Business Development, Sanitation, Communication, and Ethics.

OSAC Scholarship and The Ford Family Scholarship applications are OPEN!

On November 1st, both the OSAC Scholarship Application and The Ford Family Foundation scholarship applications opened!

The OSAC Scholarship Application is a common application that supports between 500-600 scholarships each year. These scholarships are for Oregon students with each scholarship having it's own criteria and limitations. Some of these scholarships DO allow students to attend college outside of Oregon.

To access the OSAC Scholarship Application, click here

Most high school students will want to apply to the Ford Scholars program, which funds high school graduates who are seeking a bachelor's degree. While the Ford Scholars are very generous financially, the true value in the scholarship comes in the form of ongoing support from The Ford Family Foundation, including a success coach, leadership development and an active alumni network. This scholarship is open to students from Oregon (and Siskiyou County California), and students must attend college or university in their home state. View the flyer below for more information about the Ford Scholars Program.
