COUNSELOR CORNER COUNSELOR CORNER

Welcome back, Tremont families! We are so excited to begin another great year together.

I am beginning my 18th year as Tremont’s school counselor, and this is Katie’s second year working alongside me after spending 19 years as a music teacher in Upper Arlington. Together, we support students, staff, and families with students’ social-emotional, academic, and career-readiness needs through classroom lessons, small groups, and individual meetings.

Each month, we visit classrooms for lessons connected to the American School Counselor Association Mindsets & Behaviors and our UA Profile of an Engaged Learner.

In September, our focus will be on building positive relationships with peers. We’ll read Be the One by Lauren Grabois Fischer and help students connect the story to their own experiences at school. We’ll talk about the many ways they can “be the one” who includes others, steps in when someone needs support, and helps create positive connections at Tremont.

If you ever have questions or feel we can support your child, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Below, you’ll find an overview of our counseling curriculum for the year.

4th and 5th Grade-The Pride Opportunity 4th and 5th Grade-The Pride Opportunity

The Pride is a leadership opportunity for Tremont 4th and 5th graders who would like to help make our school a positive, welcoming, and safe place for everyone. Students who participate in The Pride could help with morning, or afternoon duties, including:

  • Greeting students as they arrive or leave school

  • Helping students get where they need to go in the hallways

  • Assisting at crosswalks

  • Helping our kindergarten students

  • Sharing encouraging messages with students throughout our school

  • Helping with other leadership jobs around Tremont

If this sounds like an opportunity your child would enjoy, please use the link to sign up.

We are excited to offer two-year-long opportunities for students to participate in music clubs this year. Whether your student has a passion, a knack, or a curiosity for music, we encourage them to try one of these opportunities outside of the regular music classroom.

You may register for both clubs here:

Guitar/Ukulele Club (3rd-5th Grade)

When: Thursdays from (3:00-3:30) Starting September 17th

Where: Mr. Benedetti’s classroom

This club is dedicated to teaching students chord playing and singing to songs, many of which will accompany the choir in school performances. You do not need to provide your own instrument, but are encouraged to if you have your own. Instruments may be stored in either music room during the school day.

Please Note:

Rehearsals are 30 minutes long, (no longer 45 minutes like previous years), and we are a performance-focused club. For many elementary students, this is a challenge, especially after a full day of school. We encourage you to discuss this with your student before signing them up.

Rehearsal ends at 3:30: Following rehearsals, students will need to put their instruments away, clean up chairs, and gather their belongings. This means most students will be ready for pickup at 3:35.

Students in 2nd grade who have taken lessons on the instrument may join with permission from the teacher. It will largely depend on the size of the club whether we can accommodate this request. Please email at cbenedetti@uaschools.org or kfolger@uaschools.org

Drummers: We are always looking for students with a background in drumming to join the group as the drummer. Spots for this are very limited, but any interested students with drumming experience are encouraged to speak with their music teacher.

Choir (4th and 5th Grade)

When: 5th grade: Mondays 11:20-11:50 4th grade: Wednesdays 11:45-12:10 Starting September 14th

Where: Mrs. Folger’s classroom

Choir will offer students an opportunity to focus on their voice as an instrument. Students will meet with their grade level once a week and rehearse during their regular recess time. One meeting will be for 4th and a separate day for 5th graders. When closer to concerts, we will combine during the overlap of recess time to prepare for performances. Choir provides several exciting performance opportunities both during and outside of school. Also, in keeping with a tradition that has been around since its inception under Nancy King, we will close with an end-of-the-year pizza party!

Please Note:

Rehearsals will only be 30 minutes long, and in reality, even shorter by the time we get everything started. This means it is important that students attend every rehearsal they are in school for. When we are closer to performances, we will combine 4th and 5th together for one or two rehearsals during one of the regular meeting times, and will send communication ahead of time. If a student struggles with regular attendance on days that they are at school, we will communicate it with you.

Football Friday night guidelines for elementary and middle school families

If you plan to cheer on your Golden Bears this season, please keep in mind the following important rules. These expectations will be enforced throughout the football season in order to create a positive and enjoyable environment for Golden Bear fans of all ages.

  • If you choose to participate in a tailgate, please be aware that state law prohibits the possession or use of alcohol or controlled substances on school grounds or at school-related events. This includes any school parking lot.

  • If you have a young fan in your family, please remember that elementary and middle school students must be accompanied by a supervising adult throughout the entirety of the game. These students should sit in the stands during the game unless they are using the restroom or waiting in line at the concession stands. There should be no loitering at the concession stands, restrooms or under the bleachers.

  • Footballs and other sports equipment are not allowed at the game and will be confiscated. Students should not throw these or other items, spit or touch each other.

  • Elementary and middle school students are not permitted on the field after the game until the visiting team is off the turf and the alma mater has concluded.

  • Students must leave the stadium within 20 minutes of the conclusion of the game.

  • Finally, the turf practice fields will be off limits during and after varsity football home games.

If a student is not able to meet these expectations during the game, a parent or guardian will be contacted to pick up the student immediately.

Parent Information Night: Elementary Gifted Services

Elementary parents are invited to attend one of two Elementary Gifted Services Parent Information Nights in the coming weeks. These sessions are designed to help answer questions regarding gifted services, including gifted qualifications, gifted clusters and Written Education Plans (WEPs). The same presentation will be provided on both nights, so please select the date that works best for you. **Please note the corrected date for our second presentation.**

  • Monday, August 31: Jones Middle School auditorium, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, September 3: Hastings Middle School auditorium, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Hope Garden dedication ceremony set for September 4

Join the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, Upper Arlington Schools and the Short family for the dedication of the Hope Garden at Upper Arlington High School on Friday, September 4, at 5:30 p.m.

The brief ceremony will be held at the garden, located near the south entrance of Marv Moorehead Memorial Stadium, between the high school building and the tennis courts. This space is a peaceful, welcoming space where students, families, staff and community members can pause in times of heartache, find hope in difficult moments and honor the memories of those they have lost.

Made possible through the generosity of donors to the Hope Garden Fund through the Upper Arlington Education Foundation, the garden honors the life of Sam Short and other Upper Arlington students who passed away during their time in our schools. Sam, the beloved son of Mike and Tori Short, was the first graduate of Upper Arlington High School's 100th class. His courageous spirit and enduring optimism inspired his family to create a place that not only celebrates his life but also provides comfort, hope and remembrance for members of the Upper Arlington Schools community who have experienced the loss of a student.
